Best stay of our 30 night vacation!
What a wonderful experience we had! We came to tour DC and needed a safe place to crash for our children and pup. Upon arrival, we were quickly greeted by the owner and felt very welcome, including the pup who was greeted with dog treats. He was full of great information about the area and made recommendations for where to eat. The property has organic fruit and veggies growing on it and guests are welcome to help themselves. In the back of the property are bee boxes and let us tell you, what an incredible experience! He went out of his way to bring in 3 CHILDREN'S bee suits so our girls could get up close and had a good hour of learning about bees and we had the opportunity to try raw honey. We truly appreciated his hospitality and would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!
Where to start? We have stayed in eight different VRBO properties and loved every one but this one. The "cozy suite" consists of a couple of basement rooms which are very small. The second bedroom/sitting area would be useful for neither purpose. It is a small space with one piece of furniture, a futon bed, a lamp and nothing else. We kept our luggage there, as there was almost no room in the bedroom. I can't imagine more than two people staying in the unit, and it was cramped for us. The apartment was much more tired-looking than the pictures. There were various minor problems. The bathroom sink was clogged, the soap dispenser in the shower was empty. The kitchenette consisted of a small refrigerator (no freezer) a microwave and an old toaster oven. But the biggest problem was the heat. The unit does not have a separate thermostat so the temperature is controlled by the owner who lives above. Heat rises, so the basement was chilled. The owner did provide a space heater which allowed us to get the temperature in the bedroom to normal levels, but the rest of the unit was downright chilly on a January morning, I would say in the 50s. When I complained, the owner dismissed my concerns, but raised the temperature upstairs, which did very little as the warmth did not translate to the basement. But he did eventually provide a second space heater which made matters better. Sad to say, the owner's attitude was not helpful, and after we left (a day early), we received a sarcastic email rant from him, including four "lols" Renter beware!
Unacceptable is right — I hope anyone reading these mean-spirited lies will read the other reviews -- this is a complete fabrication. Hosting is a rewarding and fulfilling endeavor and we have made many friends and met many fine people doing so. But this episode was shocking. These folks refused to be reasonable and civil despite every effort we made to accommodate their erratic behavior.
They postponed their arrival 5 times, and then the boyfriend shows up on the 6th day. He spends two nights here without complaint. I ask him each morning if everything is okay? Offer to watch his dog. He says everything is fine! His girlfriend shows up the second to last night. Obviously upset.
The next morning my partner is accosted early on her way to work and yelled at about the temperature of the unit.
I was in no way dismissive, I simply said that 50 degrees was an exaggeration. I immediately raised the temperature and brought them a third space heater. The guy is screaming at me about how he's gonna write a terrible review. Even tho for the previous two nights he said everything was fine. He's yelling at me so I just continue to apologise, leave him the heater and go to work.
Saying I was not helpful is outrageous. Not only did I respond immediately to their concerns, I would have refunded their fee but they were more interested in yelling at me than solutions.
When I return they have vacated without informing me they were leaving and without locking the unit. The only issue they raised with me was the heat. The 'sarcastic' email was simply to determine if they had actually left and because of their abrogation of not only basic civility but of their contractual obligation -- leaving the house unlocked is a security issue. It is also customary to give the owner a chance to resolve any issues before freaking out. Lol;-).
Regardless, as to the other specifics, which is just their petty way of trying to pile on complaints, I have had two couples with kids stay very happily many times. I had 11 Swedes in there last summer. They loved it! The sink is not clogged, and if the soap dispenser was empty all they had to do was ask for more. Someone is always around to deal with any issues. The unit is exactly as pictured -- it has only been on HomeAway for a year lol. It is so not tired! It is sparkling clean!
Let me assure anyone reading this that if you are in any way unhappy we will happily refund your fees. We like happy faces!
We had a very good time at Eric's place. He was always ready to help us with any need. His suggestions were always great. Our dog was welcomed. We will go back.
Overall my family enjoyed the peaceful serenity and relaxed atmosphere of this property.
The garden was lovely and we got to pick some fresh cucumbers and tomatoes to take back to Chesapeake with us, as well as honey from the hives on the property. We found Lisa so much fun to talk to, both Eric and Lisa were hospitable and friendly hosts. Loved their dog, Sam as well as the hot tub! Just a few suggestions to improve the property: the old hot tub poolside that is filled with scummy rain water is a mosquito breeding spot, and with the threat of Zika virus lately- you might wish to drain it and permanently seal it closed. That was the only reason we didn't use the pool during our stay. The apartment didn't smell good when we arrived, the main bedroom closet seemed to be the source and it smelled like pet urine, so we did not use the closet during our stay. I would have given 5 stars regardless of the two issues above if not for my wife and i having gotten bit multiple times by the fleas inside our room. My wife is severely allergic to flea bites and not only are her feet and ankles covered with itchy blisters, but her upper leg and lower belly too. We addressed our concern about the flea problem with Eric, and he was very apologetic about having an exterminator in to eliminate the insects.
We are glad our guests enjoyed our ground and amenities, and sorry they didn't try the lovely pool. The old hot tub does fill with water, but I keep those mosquito-killing drop-ins in there, so there are no mosquitos coming from that. It is August in the DC suburbs and we do have have a lot of mosquitos, that's just the hot humid northeastern summer.
The fleas are another story altogether. We do allow pets, and unfortunately some pet owners are not on their game and it appears that the last folks who stayed here infested the suite. I have bombed it twice and steam-cleaned the carpet. We feel mortified that this happened, and are modifying our pet policy to include flea-treatment for animals. Hopefully this will never happen again. We are very sorry for this situation, and the discomfort it caused our guests and are striving to do everything possible to make sure it never happens again.
Stay was great! Exactly what we were looking for.
The place was great. Just far enough from the busyness of D.C.
