About Mike and Kim Walker
Mike and Kim relocated to the Downeast Maine region 13 years ago wanting to live where the mountains meet the ocean and be surrounded by an abundance of natural unspoiled beauty. They love being outdoors in all four seasons and enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing as well as quiet moments observing nature in the woods. Kim is an established Maine tile artist and the beauty of the area has a strong influence on the aesthetics of her work. Mike works as a computational biologist and commutes to Bar Harbor regularly or works remotely from this ideal location via the internet.

Why Mike and Kim Walker chose Franklin
The property is located on a small residential peninsula on Taunton bay near the Donnell Pond Preserves, home of Tunk, Caribou, Black, Catherine, and Schoodic mountains whose range makes for a beautiful backdrop while kayaking in the bay. This is blueberry country and large vistas of blueberry fields blanket the area as far as the eye can see. In the fall they turn into warm hues of reds, magenta and purple resembling the look of richly colored asian rugs.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our quaint carriage house was custom designed by us in order to best accommodate our tastes and lifestyle. We applied two important philosophies to our design approach. One being to maximize the living space by minimizing both sleeping quarters and kitchen. The other is to bring the outdoors in. For example we have large south-side windows and transoms for bringing in lots of daylight, attached second story deck which overlooks the property down to the cove, screened-in sleeping porch, and a wall of french doors which leads underneath a 24' arbor covered in vines and wisteria. We would now like to extend an invitation to share our charming carriage house with you. We hope our warm hospitality and sincere commitment to making your stay here enjoyable and comfortable will provide you with a wonderful and memorable experience.

This home was exactly what we wanted. Set in the woods it was so peaceful and relaxing.
Coastal Retreat was the perfect girl friend getaway! The privacy, quiet, peace, and beauty of the house's location was just what we needed. Sunrises, sunsets, and the stars are gorgeous. Breathtaking water views are a short walk through the woods behind the house.
There is also a neighborhood waterfront area where we saw seals! We stayed out there for hours just enjoying the beauty of nature and the views.
Acadia is nearby, local restaurants are good, and the location makes getting around easy. Kim was a fantastic host—helpful, kind, and thoughtful. Would recommend this house to anyone!
Thank you for a wonderful time!
A perfect escape
A wonderful place to stay - spotless, very peaceful and comfortable, and with so many thoughtful touches. Secluded and surrounded by wildlife but still close to Ellsworth and an easy drive to MDI.
Can’t say enough about the lovely week at Coastal Retreat. Kim was so gracious and helpful throughout and the cottage was peaceful and relaxing after a day of hiking, biking, or kayaking. Don’t miss Schoodic Peninsula, the Beehive, and the popovers at Jordan Pond. We look forward to coming back!
Kim was the perfect host. The place was spotless and in great order. Location was convenient to both sides of Acadia. We had a really nice stay.
