About Walter Dufresne and Karen Balogh - not yet imperial grand poobahs
Walter and Karen met at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1978, where we studied in RIT's College of Graphic Arts & Photography. We live on Montgomery Place in Brooklyn's North Slope. We work in New York City at architectural and interiors photography and printing, and we love the city and the country.
Walter Dufresne and Karen Balogh - not yet imperial grand poobahs purchased this Farmhouse in 2000
Why Walter Dufresne and Karen Balogh - not yet imperial grand poobahs chose Sharon
We bought our old farmhouse on the last day of summer in the year 2000. Walter loves the mechanics of old houses, and we love making home improvements, with and without the help of a terrific local contractor.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Sharon, Connecticut is 100 miles north of New York City. Sharon is an old colonial-era dairy farming community, and we either drive from Brooklyn or take the MetroNorth commuter train to the end of the Harlem Valley line at Wassaic. The Town is quiet and sleepy, and an antidote to working in New York City.

Great stay very inviting!
Love the farm house feel.
Great, as usual!
It’s our third stay at Walter’s and Karen’s. Great house, hospitable hosts. Enjoyed it.
Absolutely loved this beautiful home! Not only was the location convenient, this house had everything I needed during my 2 week stay. Including a large, well-equipped kitchen that was necessary for an event I was baking for. My only regret was that I couldn't book the entire month of July. Highly recommended!!
Charming country getaway.
Charming home with lots of nooks and crannies (and books!) for the kids to explore. It is clear that it is loved and given its owners and guests many happy memories. There are beautiful views that make you feel like you’re out in the country yet my husband and daughter were able to walk into town both days for coffees and baked goods. We even took advantage of the nearby Sharon Medical Center when my daughter had a mishap on her bike. And we ate brunch al fresco while the kids ran around the yard. The lake was super fun and our hosts had everything ready with the parking pass for the town beach. Thank you for a most memorable weekend!
Dream country house
The Farmhouse is the perfect getaway to simpler living. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming and hospitable, and they have decorated and renovated the old house beautifully. Four adults and two dogs were in paradise for the weekend.
Perfect space for our family of 4
Our family 2 adults and 2 six-year olds stayed here over Thanksgiving. We loved preparing pies for the Thanksgiving meal in the kitchen that has everything you could need and more. In the mornings, we came downstairs, drank coffee with the sun lighting up the kitchen area and enjoyed some morning board games. The outside field has paths to run the kids around to expend some energy. The owners were great and quickly responded as we managed to lock ourselves out. Thank you and we hope to be back fro another Thanksgiving weekend!
You'll find a Sharon Town Beach permit in the mudroom, and can drive or bike to the sandy beach at Silver Lake, aka Mudge Pond. The painter Jasper Johns lives across the lake from the town beach.
