Magical stay at Casa Acali
We stayed in one of the bungalows for a week and it was absolutely perfect. Kate was extremely responsive and helpful, and we loved meeting folks from Cafe Maya as well. We had a gorgeous view from our room, a hot plate, mini fridge and small bathroom. Food at Cafe Maya was delicious and we were so happy to be a bit down the beach from loud bars and hotel. It felt private and peaceful. We thought many times that we lucked on with the best place in Zipolite. We will happily stay there again and I can't wait until we do. Thanks so much, Kate!

A gem on the beach
Now, after more than 6 weeks my reactions are stronger than ever; Kate and Re provide lodging (with the acknowledged best view on the beach) and experiences keeping in mind your needs, desires and abilities. Cafe Maya is well known for breakfast but the real secret is the gourmet dinner menu at plebeian prices, We had [Dinamite - a novel tuna presentation with avocado and cucumber with soy and a hint of siracha $85 MX; Seared sashimi tuna with still crunchy teriyaki veggies and rice $135MX; and the special of the day, Filet Mignon 8-10 oz with crunchy hot veggies and mash potatoes $180 MX with a side salad.] Every expectation Kate spoke of during our first drive from the Huatulco (HUX) airport has been met or surpassed - no small feat for family business. I found Cafe Maya/ Casa Acalli online and researched it extensively over several websites. While we have been here a mere five days, I find that the past reviews still underrate this “best buy” type of establishment. As such, it may be a tad rough around the edges (e.g. the steps to the best rooms are narrow and steep and in some of the rooms the floors are smooth, but untiled, concrete). Sure, higher price settings offer finer details but as an inexpensive lodging and restaurant, it is very difficult to beat. Café Maya/Casa Acalli is a family run affair and the benefits of their hard work and devotion are evident and apparent from the friendly greetings to the repairs and upgrades and even an attention to personal dietary needs. However, as in any small family business there are limited resources and if the limitations are in areas of special need for the customer, I suppose it could be a bit bumpy. There seems to be a steady stream of individuals and couples whose commonality seems to create an open fraternity of guests; both new and returning. The proprietress, Kate, prepares an awesome and relatively inexpensive set of menu items. Café Maya is a favorite choice for wholesome, delicious breakfasts, .which, at times, includes her homemade bread! The comments above are simply prelude to the fact that Cafe Mays/Casa Acalli is ON the beach, albeit the quieter end of this beach.

I am from rural Wisconsin, USA, and have lived since 1999 in Mexico, and since 2008 here in Zipolite, operating Cafe Maya - Casa Acalli on the beach. Before moving to Mexico, I lived in Alaska for 3 years, where I studied primary school education and Native culture and worked in summers as a Kayak and Rafting guide. My partner, Rey, the local Lifeguard Captain and also a Surf Instructor, is a Totonaca Mayan Indian from the state of Veracruz, and we have two children: Acalli, born in 2010, and Ileana in 2012. We opened Cafe Maya - Casa Acalli in 2008, before which time I had a very successful restaurant in Mazunte a few kilometers from here (opened in the year 2000). I also work as a freelance translator (Spanish-English) in low season. Aside from cooking and baking and being a mom, I enjoy yoga, swimming, camping, running on the beach, music, travel and family time. I hope to share my experiences with guests in a positive and enriching manner, as I wish for them to do with my family. A motto I have always related to as a country girl and Organic Farmer is BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED. I was raised on organic, whole, healthy foods, and that carries over into the menu I offer my restaurant: fresh baked whole grain bread, (semi-)natural desserts, sushi using fresh local seafood, salads, mixed vegetable stir frys, cooked with love!

Why they chose this property

The property is owned by my husband and we both wanted to be self-employed and begin a family so this is what our dreams have led us to! It is the perfect spot for us, as my husband is also the local lifeguard captain and has clear visibility of what is happening on the entire beach from in front of our house! It is the perfect spot to host travelers who enjoy the same things we do: relaxing and enjoying living WITH nature, beach life AND meeting new good people while doing it!

What makes this property unique

Location location location! We have an incredible spot which has been very advantageous for us in relation to the success of our business. We could run a quality operation anywhere in the world but the conservation of our natural surroundings and majestic ocean views are intrinsic to our success!
