About Jamie Newell
I love Chicago and although I was born in Cleveland, I have lived and worked the majority of my adult life in the Windy City. I’m in show business. I call myself an actor (OK actress, if you want to be technical) but the truth is I dabble in all areas of the arts. dabble. I make a living creating shows and special events for corporate America, voicing characters for commercials on radio, TV, video games, cartoons, the web, your answering machine… I also perform comedy and theater and my favorite is acting in film. Also, I make art…. Maybe refinish furniture or create jewelry, write some poetry…whatever . Sometimes I just draw or doodle. I sing a lot. See what I mean? I am, proudly and deeply, in love with the arts….all facets. I love animals, too. I have a dog, named Lexi, who is my shadow, two cats (both lap type kitties, siblings Felix and Sugar. Different fathers. Same litter. Did you know that was possible. Neither did I until I adopted them.) and a Russian box turtle, named Trixie. Apparently, she’s a stripper. I personally have never seen her show but the cats say she’s fabulous! I am also a single mother of two adult kids. One is a groomer a financial consultant for Mass Mutual. I am a people person. I adore conversation and listening to stories. Early in my career, I bartended at a couple of the great Blues and jazz clubs in Chicago. I made REALLY great in tips and I think it was because I listened to people. So…tell me about you. Then again, if you are a private person, got it!
Jamie Newell purchased this House in 2017
Why Jamie Newell chose Portage Park
I recently purchased this property and chose it for so many reasons. I will share a few of them with you. I knew I wanted to live in the Bungalow Belt. It was a fixer-upper which I wanted and it had a front porch with a swing and a fenced yard plus an ideal property location to rent to travelers! Sold! The home is now registered as an official Historic Bungalow. My home was built in 1916. It has metamorphosed over time into two separate family homes; mine is on the first floor and yours on the second. Eventually, I will have a third in the basement. It is definitely charming with its peculiarities as you will see with the crooked wall in the kitchen area and the cozy and awkward walk-in closets. I love the location because it is so easy to find and super simple to navigate from ALL the major highways in Chicago yet not so close that you get the dirt, the noise, and the congestion. (OK it IS Chicago, after-all, with congested streets everywhere but not nearly as bad in my area). I wanted a place where you could get to Wrigley Field easily and that’s right down the road just 6.5 miles. Welcome Cub Fans! I wanted it to be convenient to stores, too. And it is. I also wanted a home that had cool places nearby. Have you heard of the famous Six Corners in Chicago? Yep, that’s down the street from me. How about the restored and incredibly beautiful Patio or Portage Theaters that play festival and art films? Yep, you can walk to the Patio which is around the corner from my home and The Portage Theater is not much further. Three trains run through Portage Park so if I don't feel like driving I don't have to. I also wanted a place close to one of our airports to house stranded travelers and, of course, for my for my own traveling convenience. Lastly, I love the people in my neighborhood: a nice mix of ethnicities and ages and family styles. I even have a big city official living on my street. Cool, huh? Come see for yourself. I bet you will appreciate my property, too.
What makes this House unique
Life feels so simple when swinging on a front porch swing, don't you think? My porch is the perfect perch to watch the world go by… and dog walkers and joggers and folks going or coming or just out for a stroll. Then again, there are some days that outside seclusion is the preference and Voila: my backyard with privacy hedges and fence. I also love that I can walk anywhere to find fun and great food. One of my favorite deep dish Chicago pizza places just happens to be at the end of my street. What are the chances of that? You must check out this quaint little tea shop just beyond that. Great ambiance. Oh, and I can get to the grocery store, via a back street in like 2-3-minutes. And I love that my discount shopping is super close, places like Marshall’s & Target. Actually, I made a reference book for you when you visit. It is filled with page after page of cool things to do within a 2-mile radius of this place like The National Veterans Art Museum, just a stone’s throw from here. This place is under 2-miles to any of the 3 trains passing through which is an easy and joyful walk. My neighborhood is full of cool architecture everywhere. The churches alone are awesome. Did I mention I live in the Bungalow Belt? For those of you not familiar with a Chicago Bungalow, it is “Squat and square with a sloped roof, off-center entrance, wide windows and brick facade, the Chicago-style bungalow has been the heart and hearth of the city's working class,” says the Chicago Tribune. These 100+ year old homes are worth seeing. I am also a Unique Benefit to your stay (if you care.) I have 30 years of work experience in the hospitality industry which means I offer my concierge services, too. Another benefit is that I allow up to two (house-broken) dogs. I have a fenced in yard, if you are too pooped to take your pooch for a walk. I pet sit, babysit and provide family and children’s programs, too. And for those of you who want privacy… I play a fabulous disappearing act just ask!

Best place to stay!
We loved everything about our stay and could not have been happier.
Perfect home away from home!
Stayed with 2 couples for 4 nights and even added another couple for one night and had more than enough room! It is the upper of a home and is fully complete with everything you may need. And, if it isn't there, Jamie will get it to you ASAP! We had efficient and easy communications with her! The front porch was fun to hang out on. The home is 2 blocks from W. Irving Park rd and Giordanos. Neighborhood was quiet and lovely. Parking was easy and in front of the house daily. We were able to easily UBER everywhere (especially Wrigley). Blue line train was somewhat nearby. Beds were extremely comfortable! Kitchen has full size stove/oven/fridge/micro. Air conditioners in every room was great! Jamie really takes pride in her home and her role as a hostess! Would definitely suggest for families, couples or friends....perfect all around!
My wife and I spent a couple of weeks at Jaimie’s house in May. It was a tastefully renovated 2nd floor of a classic Chicago bungalow. We had our 2 dogs with us and had everything we needed in the apartment. We would recommend this home for couples and couples with dogs.
This place is fantastic! Great location, safe, and CLEAN! The owner is available but unobtrusive, can certainly see her pride in ownership as the apartment is very well appointed and did I mention CLEAN? This is everything I look for in a vrbo and thank you Jamie!
What a great review. Thank you for noticing the cleanliness as that is so important for me and my guests. Great to know my extra efforts are being appreciated. I look forward to more visits, Mr. PlumberHelper ;)
Jamie was a great hostess, very friendly and often asking us if she could do anything to make our stay more enjoyable. Very helpful and would give good suggestions when we asked.
The place was very nice, clean and comfortable. It was in a nice neighborhood, that was within walking distance to a good amount of stores and restaurants which was really nice.
You two were as quiet as church mice and so easy to host. I hope this will be your place to stay when you come to visit your college-going daughter. Thank you again for your business.
Wanted to move in!
Our spectacular host, Jamie, was welcoming and accommodating with even the minutest details which made for extreme comforts away from home. Our living space was clean and well stocked with all essential household items. If Jamie's guests are in need of anything, she is there to ensure your needs are met. The neighborhood is convenient to many retail services--our fave was Giordano's--a deep dish pizza restaurant. With Chicago only 5.5 hours drive for us, this will be our first choice for a place to stay.
It was great meeting you guys and thank you for your kind words. I was so tickled to find you guys enjoying the front porch during the rain storm...it is so cool, isn't it? Come back, again.Soon? I hope so.
Before I tell you about the area, I wanted to let you know that I create special events. Have been doing so for the corporate world for over 25 years. I was thinking...would you like me to create some magical event to add to your trip? Something creative and customized. If this interests you, let me know, if you would like something unique on this trip.
OK about the area...
This neighborhood? (follow-me-on-this) Beaver-Cleaverland in the new millennium, city-style.
NO? OK, in plain(er) English, I live in a quiet neighborhood in the middle of the block surrounded by a diversity of neighbors and beautiful 100+-year-old Chicago bungalows. Take a walk as they are so fun to look at their uniqueness and similarities. It seems my neighbors are all hard-working families. I have enjoyed meeting many of them in my short time here. It pays to have a porch! I have put together a guide for your stay that lists everything nearby: drug stores, specialty shops, churches, hospitals, playgrounds, costume stores and more and all within a 2-mile radius.
Chicago’s history is so fascinating and Portage Park plays a part in its early history. Wanna know more? That’s why porch swings were invented…for good storytelling. Just ask. I know loads about Chicago’s fascinating history.
This place BTW is conveniently located in-between all the major highways so my place is a snap to find. Uber easy, too.
I am down the road from Wrigley Field. OK, far enough away that you're not bothered by all the craziness but close enough and super-n-easy to get to Cubs Park with one short bus ride and only 2 blocks from my home! Ask me about our Blues Brothers who opened for the Cubs World Series game in Chicago. And yes, they are available for events, meet and greet and surprise appearances.
Just for fun, I have put together a free scavenger hunt based on the photos in my BnB. Ask me about finding all these cool places...I will only give you hints.
Hope to see you here soon.
