About this property

Villino Totemsin | Sky Room | steam sauna • hot tub

Villino Totemsin, "cabin of totems”, is a mid-century modern, timber frame, partially designed by famed Chicago architect A. Richard Williams. Built of whole trees (totems). Magical, funky, rustic, quirky, comfortable. The setting: private, woods (full of songbirds in warm weather, sheer beauty in winter). A view of the river valley, 2 stone fireplaces, huge windows and a wood-fired hot tub. Near lakes, rivers & mountains. 15 minutes to Hanover, NH.
This timber frame home was constructed using entire trees, harvested from the property, they stand, like totem poles, visually joining the surrounding woods. The south-facing, wall of glass window blurs the boundary between inside and out. It's like living inside the Nature Channel, in a reverse snow globe, surrounded by weather, but cozy, inside.
Two stone fireplaces flank the main space, to enjoy firelight (during cold months), one even has a built in oven that can be used for cooking, if desired. Wide pine and oak floors made from timber from the property and milled just up the road. There is space to prep and eat contained in the rental suite, but the full kitchen, on the main floor, is available for guest use. (Please let me know, if you're interested in using the main kitchen.)
The hot tub is available, for an additional fee of $50 (please ask about availability, in advance.)
Privacy
Note that the Sky Room itself is private, with bed, table and chairs, lounge area, etc.. The loft area is semi-private (where the second bed is located), open to the main body of the house. There are folding screens to create privacy, but it is open to the ambiance, sounds, etc. of the main floor, below. Again, the loft is open to the house, semi-private , which really needs to work for you. Please consider this, before renting. Thanks!
FYI: This rental is for the Sky Room Suite, which does not constitute rental of the entire main floor. You are invited to pass through the main floor space, yet be aware that we live there and you will find evidence of our lives there.
Entire House Rental is possible (ask about fee and availability): but this listing is for just the Sky Suite, a private room with it's own bath, loft and deck (with view: open in winter, leafy in full spring/summer).
I may be available, in the house, or may be out of town during a guests visit. If a fee has been paid for the hot tub prep, it will be ready at check in time, or as agreed.
• The loft is "semi-private", please, look at the pictures to see how the space sits above the "great room" of the home.
• The rental suite (room and loft) are accessed by a spiral staircase (2' wide). Be aware that you may need to duck your head to avoid banging it! (Watch your head!)
• The loft does not have a railing. I've taken measures to protect you, but you'll need to be aware and keep yourself safe!
• The hot tub is available for an additional fee of $50.
• Finnish style, steam sauna available. Seats 2 people. Ladle water onto hot rocks to bathe in invigorating steam. Great after skiing, hiking, or just because! ($35 fee to include it in your stay.) Please be careful when using the sauna, the stove unit, rocks and steam will be very hot and can be dangerous. Rules for safe use will be posted and must be followed.
• Claw Foot Tub for Rental Space on Loft
The rental suite includes a dynamite, two-sided, 6 ft claw foot tub. The tub is on rental suite loft, not in an enclosed room, in view of the huge picture window face of the house, but tucked behind surrounding folding screens and plants, to create the level of privacy that you desire.
• Small Food Prep Room in Rental Suite
A microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator are in the rental suite space, for your use. The full kitchen, on the main floor, is also available for cooking.
• The entry (mud room), a downstairs bathroom, the carport and garden (and a couple other minor bits of the house) are still in construction. This doesn't affect the rental suite, but you may notice it when you are here.
• We do not lock the door.
• Check in time is 4pm and check out time is 11am.

The neighborhood is very rural. This house is in the woods and other homes are only visible from the edge of the deck, or through the woods. None the less, we have a variety of great restaurants in the area and Hanover, NH is right down the road (15 minutes) where concerts, movies, dance performances, etc. are usually available.

SEMI-private at best
This chalet is very quaint and isolated. However, there is no real privacy. The tub (there is no shower) is located on the open air loft and visible from the downstairs. There is a door closing off the half bath, and the main bed upstairs has french doors. The owner was kind and friendly and attempted to stay out of the way, but was non-the-less present and living there while we were there and getting ready. There is no TV and wifi is spotty. It was a unique but awkward experience.

Peaceful oasis
This seemed like a perfect way to experience Vermont. I felt like I was in a treehouse. I loved exploring the local lakes, rivers, and running trails. 15 minute drive to Hanover and a great place to explore Vermont from!

Mountain retreat
I think this would be ideal place for a couple on a road trip! The tub is a really nice place to enjoy a book. The wi-fi works well and added to our ability to plan the trip. I stayed with my 60-year-old father and I would caution that the house does have quite a few fall risks due to the house design including a spiral staircase and a few stairs in the loft area which makes for an uneven floor. Although my Dad didn't fall, he told me that he had two close calls in the middle of the night! Overall, if I was traveling with friends my age or my fiance and needed a place to stay I would like to stay here again. Harrison was kind to us and we never felt disturbed when he was home. There is a fridge and microwave in the loft but no cooking area. There are breakfast spots within 7 minutes of the house. This place is a nice basecamp for exploring the area. VINS bird sanctuary is within a half hour and I highly suggest it!

Unique setting
Read the description carefully. You are not renting a house; it's an upstairs loft with a private room. That being said, the place was very uniquely designed and decorated. The huge bedroom had a queen size bed, large table with chairs and a lounge area. There was a full wall of windows at the far end of the room to the top of the vaulted ceiling. The sun streamed in and filled the room with natural light. There was also a private deck off the room to relax with a cup of coffee or wine. Outside the bedroom, there was a large platform with another queen bed, a kitchenette (coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave), small bathroom and a huge clawed tub in an open, but private area. Harrison was kind and helpful. He sent us several emails with suggestions of places to visit. I recommend this unique setting to anyone who enjoys venturing out and trying something new. You won't be disappointed!
