The Gargano: Gargano - the spur of Italy
The spur of Italy was in geological times an island that today through the fertile plateau (Tavoliere) connected from Foggia to the Apennine peninsula. The formerly inaccessible because karst jagged promontory reaches heights of over 1,000 m and will slide about 65 km in the southern Adriatic front.
The interior of the Gargano was available until the beginning of this century, only about paths, with the western part and the eastern heavily karstified is forested gorgeous. The largest forest, the Foresta Umbra -about 11,000 hectares, mainly pine, oak and beech massive lies between the villages of Vico and Monte S. Angelo, picturesque mountain villages.

Gargano: S. Angelo is a major center of ancient mountain culture and also the highest place of the Gargano (800 m). The famous pilgrimage church of S. Michele Arcangelo is since ancient goal of believers. In addition to a Norman castle especially the medieval center perfectly preserved can be admired with its characteristic buildings. If the height of summer, the heat is oppressive at the sea, attracts a trip in this summer; panoramic roads and local genuine with, local cuisine invite.
The western part of the plateau is bare and stony, and shows a variety of karst phenomena: the sinkhole Pozzatina, one of many, is also one of the largest in Italy, the abyss of Campolato resembles a canyon. Of farmers and herdsmen true rock landscapes were formed because low walls enclose many possessions.

Gargano: Particularly impressive is of course the coast: in the north, starting with long, flat sandy beaches, which are only interrupted by small rocky outcrops, and coastal lakes of Lesina and Varano, separated by a narrow coastal strip with sand dunes and lush vegetation from the sea. Both lakes, each more than 50 square kilometers, but only a few meters deep, are very rich in fish and conservation area. From Rodi Garganico -an ancient place and a chic and lively Badezentrum- the coast is steep, rugged and incredibly varied. Bays with kl. Sand and gravel beaches, which are often accessible only by paths or by sea, enliven the green coastline. Pine often extend to the beach, their green crowns form an attractive contrast to the bright white-yellow limestone cliffs. The still wonderful, crystal clear water invites you to all kinds of water sports; Bathing season is from May to October, the most pleasant months of June and September ...
