Le Bourg, Castanet
We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in the peaceful, picturesque village of Castanet. Le Bourg is a unique and very beautiful, old, French dwelling, which combines traditional charm with modern amenities. Pauline, Ian and their dog Clyde gave us a warm welcome on arrival and couldn't have been more helpful.
During our stay we enjoyed the surrounding area especially the nearby villages of Parisot (where we dined on several occasions in L'Auberge), Villefranche, Caylus, Najac, Cordes and St Antonin.
For anyone looking for an authentic French experience, we would thoroughly recommend both Le Bourg and the Tarn et Garonne area, and we hope to return there soon.
Hello and many thanks for your lovely review.
It certainly is a beautiful part of France which is why we fell in love with it and the house, 18 years ago.
You'd be welcome back anytime.
This a cute, quirky property in an interesting region. We had a lovely time. Ian and Pauline were extremely kind and helpful.
Charming house in French hamlet
We travelled with 3 kids (15, 12 and 10) and a dog and absolutely loved our relaxing stay. The house is tastefully decorated with attention for detail and furnished with several antique pieces. The (relatively small) pool was a welcome place to cool off. Sitting underneath the sweet smelling fig tree, listening to the sound of silence, lovely. The village is very quiet but well maintained. Every morning we went for a walk with our dog straight from the house. There are several trails in the area.
We visited the Pech Merle cave (a highlight) and several gorgeous bastide towns. The owners are very responsive and replied to our emails immediately, providing us with tips for restaurants and keeping cool during a heatwave. Our only comment would be that wireless was not great and 3G reception in this area spotty. We craved a digital detox so didn’t mind it too much, but for others this may be an issue. However, overall we had the most wonderful stay in a lovely house. The real French countryside!
Many thanks for your comments; We're really pleased you had a great time and loved the house.
Sorry about the intermittent 3G reception; being a hamlet we're down the priority list I'm afraid. We have been promised super-fast broadband within the next couple of years. However I can't guarantee that so we'll have to wait and see!!
Lovely period house in beautiful village
Lovely house in a quintessential small French village. Wonderful architecture all around and the house is right in the centre of the charming village square. Great pool which is quite small but plenty big enough for our grown up children and ourselves to enjoy. Lovely split level garden with outside dining area.
The house is spacious and well suited to our needs which was for my husband and I and our three grown up children and friends. There is plenty of space for everyone.
The house was very clean and very well cared for.
The area is very special and truly rural with great rivers and towns to explore.
Pauline and Ian were extremely helpful in every possible way.
I would highly recommend Le Bourg.
Really glad you enjoyed it. The house used to be 2 village houses and an outbuilding and I think that's why everyone has plenty of space to themselves.
It's true that for a relatively unknown place, there's loads to see in do within a short drive.
A great property in a beautiful, quiet village. The house is extremely well equipped and perfect for our 5 adults with very comfortable beds.
The countryside is beautiful with plenty of small villages nearby to explore.
Pauline & Ian are excellent hosts who are very proud of their home and are readily available to provide plenty of information about the area.
Thank you for a great holiday!
Many thanks for your comments.
We're really pleased that you liked the house and area so much.
Maybe we'll see you the next time you're in Europe.
Castanet is an easy 1.5 hour drive from Toulouse (BA from Heathrow, Air France from Heathrow and Birmingham, Jet2 from Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle, and EasyJet from Gatwick) or 1 hour from Rodez with its Ryan Air service from Stansted and Dublin. Alternatively, it is a very easy drive from Calais via the A20 with autoroute practically all the way.
The village is well located for exploring and enjoying this very pretty part of South West France, particularly the Aveyron and Tarn Gorges and the many Bastide towns. Cordes sur Ciel, voted the French's favourite village in 2014, with its summer festivals, concerts and Saturday market is 25 minutes away. Albi the with its Toulouse Lautrec museum, shops and massive cathedral is 45 minutes drive, and Gaillac and Cahors, the regional wine centres, 45 minutes. The fabulous Millau Bridge is about 1.5-2 hours drive along the beautiful Tarn valley.
Other Activities: Canoeing (organised or individual) - great fun!!!
Golf: There is a 9 hole golf course at Villefranche de Rouergue but golfing enthusiasts would be better to go to Albi where there is a superb top quality course. The non golfers among the party could happily spend several hours in Albi (a recent Unesco Heritage site) visiting the cathedral, Toulouse Lautrec museum, taking a river trip or simply shopping and lunching.
