David and Susie
About David and Susie
Susie Gillespie is an internationally renowned textile artist and her workshop is set in the C15th orchard adjacent to “Orchard Barn House”. Flax is grown from seed in the orchard, harvested, processed and spun into linen for Susie to weave into her artwork. Susie puts on creative weaving courses suitable for both complete beginners and experienced weavers. David is a British Canoeing qualified Sea Kayak Leader and Sea Kayak Coach with many years experience paddling around the South Devon coastline. While you are staying at Orchard Barn House why not come out on one of his Sea Kayaking Guided Tour. Sea Kayaking is a wonderful way to discover the hidden beauty of the coastline and river estuaries of South Devon If you are new to Sea Kayaking, Torbay is an ideal place to start with its sheltered waters, beaches and rocky coves. The coastline is a UNESCO Global Geopark. It is home to the sea grass beds which are the breeding grounds of our native species of seahorse. If you are interested in wildlife the Dart Estuary between Totnes and Dartmouth is the place. Seals, Cormorants, Little Egrets, Kingfishers, Herons and a wide variety of seabirds are often seen as we paddle or drift along with the tide in amongst the reed beds and remote side creeks. For the more experienced Sea Kayakers, the South Hams coastline, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has a rugged coastline, sea caves, headlands and exposed cliffs for the more adventurous.
Why David and Susie chose Paignton
Inside, "Orchard Barn House" is light and bright with wood, stone and one off art pieces. It has a sleek contemporary kitchen and open plan living and dining room with a Scandinavian feel of Eames style chairs, leather sofa, Barcelona glass table and black frameless roof windows which let the light flood in. There are 3 light and bright double bedrooms with stylish wooden beds, oak flooring and a mixture of stone and wooden walls. "Orchard Room" is a double bedroom with an ensuite shower room. “Courtyard Room” is a double bedroom with ensuite shower room. “Valley Room” is a double bedroom with private shower room. There is a sunny patio in the orchard for you to relax in which looks over the flax beds which Susie and David plant, harvest and process for Susie to spin into linen before weaving it into her artwork and cushions. It’s amazing to see the vivid blue flax flowers in the summer.

A great place to stay
Enjoyable peaceful surroundings. Owners are great
Smart and modern barn
Lovely stay at this modern but comfortable barn. Plenty of room for 6 people with lots of warm water and a good size kitchen. Plenty of pots and pans and kitchen appliances. No dishwasher which is a shame for 6 people but made up for by the size of the place. Due to the nature of the barn noise travels therefore it may not be suitable for young children.
It is a very nicely refurbished and decorated barn house set in a beautiful countryside. Well done! We will be coming back!
It was a pleasure having you and your family staying here. I'm glad you enjoyed your holiday in South Devon and next time we will try and tempt you out on the sea kayaks!
David and Susie
A lovely property: friendly hosts
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Barn House. Susie and David were very helpful with recommendations of places to visit and local eateries and it was a real pleasure to visit Susie in her weaving studio. Barn House was conveniently situate, well designed and maintained. It was set back from the road within an orchard and there was a nice outdoor seating area to enjoy a glass of wine or an evening meal. The house was also well placed for visiting all areas of Devon from Dartmouth to Dartmoor.
Thank you very much for staying with us we very much enjoyed having you all here.
We are glad you enjoyed the sea kayaking, it was a lovely day.
Best wishes David and Susie
Fantastic stay in a stylish and functional property in a beautiful part of the country
We had a super stay in David and Susie's thoughtfully decorated property with our three children. The location is great for exploring the Devon coast, with great walks, some lovely beaches and other places of interest to visit. The house itself is surrounded by hills and fields, but only a short drive down a windy country road and conveniently, only an equally short drive from a supermarket - although it's hard to believe it when you're at the house! David and Susie are discreet but friendly hosts, happy to help make your stay a memorable one. We would strongly recommend this property and would gladly return ourselves for another visit.
Creative holidays… Why not combine your holiday with a creative course.
Susie Gillespie is an internationally renowned textile artist and her weaving workshop is set in the orchard adjacent to “Orchard Barn House”. Susie puts on creative weaving courses, suitable for beginners and experienced weavers, where she shows students basic weaving techniques as well as her unusual ideas in weaving.
Susie’s workshop has 5 large floor looms which she sets up with a linen warp ready for students to experiment with wrappings, twill, looping, slits and tapestry inlay.
Occasionally, Susie and David put on a flax processing, spinning and weaving course where you can learn how to process and spin flax to make a small hank of linen then weave a cushion cover or artwork. Why not combine your holiday at "Orchard Barn House” with a creative course. It’s a wonderful place to be inspired.
