About Karen and Duncan Veal
We have been living in Puglia since July 2015 after retiring early from teaching. Our own home is Villa Jasmine which we share with our two labradoodles; Freddie and Barney. Most of our time is spent in the garden or the kitchen; we produce our own olive oil, grow fruit and vegetables and are slowly learning to speak Italian.
Karen and Duncan Veal purchased this Villa in 2012
Why Karen and Duncan Veal chose San Vito dei Normanni
In 2012 we came to Puglia looking for a holiday home but found two! Villa Pera and Villa Jasmine had been started and were looking for the right person to come along and finish them. We spent 3 years renovating both villas, turning one into our home and one into a holiday home. Ideally located for the airport at Brindisi, the local town of San Vito and with excellent road links to the rest of Puglia we enjoy a country location with the convenience of a local Italian town.
What makes this Villa unique
When the estate agent opened the rusty iron- gate, the last property to view on our final viewing trip, everyone else had seen two unloved, unfinished villas, unpruned fruit trees and an overgrown jasmine hedge. We saw Villa Pera and Villa Jasmine; stylish villas that were to become our home and business. Ideally located for the airport and the local town and yet in the country we took a blank canvass and created Villa Pera specifically for holidays. Positioning the pool overlooking the olive grove, adding a window to capture the view and thinking about our future guests from the beginning, has given us enormous pleasure. We are now delighted to offer holidays at Villa Pera in the beautiful region of Puglia.

Fantastic villa, beautiful place
This is the perfect villa for a restful holiday, with easy access to plenty of beautiful places to visit when you feel like venturing out! The villa has everything you could possibly wish for and Is spotlessly clean. The pool area is stunning and the pool itself a really good size.
Duncan and Karen are perfect hosts; on hand with all the information you could possibly need whenever you need it (we followed all their suggestions and were never disappointed!).
There are plenty of beautiful places to visit (a car is a must) and so many fabulous places to eat, a week just wasn’t long enough!
Fantastic villa, fabulous place, wonderful week!
Thank you for your lovely review, you were super guests and it was a pleasure to meet you both. We are delighted you enjoyed Puglia and we look forward to meeting you again one day.
We had a lovely stay in Villa Pera. Its a well stocked villa with a great pool. Karen and Duncan were extremely friendly and helpful whilst still respecting our privacy. There's lots to do in the surrounding area, including beautiful towns, ancient roman settlements and fascinating caves. The coast is very accessible.
Thank you for your review; we are pleased you enjoyed your stay at Villa Pera and your holiday in Puglia.
Amazing, beautiful villa. Highly recommended.
Can express enough how beautiful this villa is. Karen and Duncan are perfect hosts, so helpful and friendly.
I would 100% recommend this villa to anyone, very clean and spacious with everything you need. The swimming pool and outside bbq area are perfect. We will definitely be back to stay.
Perfect Puglian getaway
We spent a lovely week at Villa Pera in June 2019, blessed with gorgeous weather and lucky to have found a villa in such a quiet location with the luxury of a perfectly secluded pool. Karen and Duncan were perfect hosts, with good communication before we arrived, and offering suggestions for places to visit and good local restaurants while we were there.
The check-in process was straightforward - Karen and Duncan showed us round and explained how everything worked - with the added bonus of a welcome basket of goodies (including extra virgin olive oil from their own trees) and a bottle of wine in the fridge.
The villa itself was perfect for our needs, spotlessly clean and well-equipped. The outdoor areas were great, and we used the barbecue a couple of times and always ate outside. Then there’s the pool of course, which I think is even better than in the photos. It’s completely secluded and we’ll never rent a villa with a shared pool again after this!
Location wise, we found the villa to be ideal for quick day trips to Alberobello, Martina Franca and Ostuni, and even for a slightly longer trip to Matera. It’s only a few minutes drive into San Vito for local restaurants and Mesagne is just a little further and has some good choices too. With a supermarket close by, we had everything we needed within easy reach.
All in all, we could easily have spent another week here, relaxing in or around the pool, popping out to local sights as the fancy took us and always eating well. In fact, I dare say we’ll do exactly that before too long.
Thanks Karen and Duncan for providing such a beautiful villa and being perfect hosts - hope to see you again soon!
Thank you for such a fantastic review! It was a pleasure to have you as our guests and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Villa Pera and exploring Puglia. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Our very best wishes
Karen and Duncan
This was our second stay at Villa Pera and, as last year, it was wonderful! The villa has everything you could possibly need to ensure a sumptuous, relaxing break. The gardens and pool area are such a great feature, offering complete privacy in a rural setting and yet only a short drive from San Vito and other charming towns. Karen and Duncan were, once again, outstanding hosts. They shared more ideas of places to visit and we tried numerous new restaurants, each one serving a different take on the tasty local cuisine. We thoroughly enjoyed our numerous day trips and were delighted to find the roads very quiet, making for easy driving. Villa Pera is a rare find and a fabulous base from which to explore this interesting region. We shall, no doubt, return again!
Thank you for your review, we were delighted to welcome you back to Villa Pera; you were super guests! we hope to see you again soon.
Superb, what a find!
We had our second holiday at Villa Pera in July 2017 having found this in March the year before. We fell in love with the area and this beautiful villa could not be better located. It has everything we needed. The pool is gorgeous and completely private with comfortable outside spaces. The owners Karen and Duncan have thought of everything and their local knowledge enabled us to get so much more from our holiday. There is so much to see and do in the area and San Vito really comes alive in the evenings with live music and delicious authentic Italian restaurants. I would highly recommend Villa Pera. We can't wait for our next visit. Thank you Karen and Duncan
Dear Sheila, thank you for your review. It was lovely to host you and David again at Villa Pera. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and were able to see the fantastic summer programme in the town and experience the glorious Puglian summer weather. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Villa Pera is situated in a small contrada 3.5km from the bustling market town of San Vito Dei Normanni, the ideal base for exploring Puglia with excellent road links to all the major towns and attractions. 23km from Brindisi airport; in 30 minutes you could be at Villa Pera enjoying the glorious sunshine and relaxing by the pool with a glass of something chilled. With two supermarkets within a 5 minute drive of the Villa, there is no need to waste valuable time stocking up on basics. San Vito has an excellent selection of specialist food shops, cafes, bars and a lively weekly market. The heart of the town is its two main squares, Piazza Leo and Piazza Giovanni Paolo, connected by the pedestrianised Corso Leonardo Leo which is lined with bars and cafes. The family run restaurant La Locanda da Nonna Mena is situated in the oldest part of town and serves delicious pugliese cusine and is listed in the 2019 Slow Food movement Bistro guide. Just off Piazza Leo is another favourite L Archetto Delle Brace, where you can enjoy a delicious selection of barbequed meats from the charcoal grill.
An extensive summer programme includes a variety of music and dance, with something for every taste. Starting in July with the festival of the Patron Saints, the town is lit with an amazing display of coloured lights and we have 3 evenings of celebrations.
In August you can experience the ‘Rezzica’ an annual event of music, dance and food to celebrate the heritage of the ‘Rezza’, unique to San Vito, the rezza is a wooden slatted shutter that locals use to cover the front door of their house, originally used to protect them from the sun and to allow air to flow through the house, to the unsuspecting holiday maker, they create an air of mystery as to what lies beyond.
Venturing further afield during your stay at Villa Pera,
the historic town of Mesagne is an easy 10 minute drive from the villa and the ‘centro storico’ has a wide selection of artisan shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. It offers an excellent alternative to San Vito for shopping and dining out.
The beach resort of Specchiolla is a 20 minute drive, a coastal road runs through the tiny town and there are a number of sandy beaches and restaurants to choose from. Along the coast line there are also beautiful sandy beaches at Torre Santa Sabina, Pantanagianni and Torre Pozella. There are a wide variety of cafes, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and for a small charge, loungers and beach umbrellas can be hired. The nature resort of Torre Guaceto is 30 minutes from the villa. The reserve is well organised with walking, sailing, snorkelling and cycling trails.
Ostuni, is the most famous of the region’s citta bianche, often referred to as the ‘white city’ it is worth spending time exploring its maze of tightly packed streets. Piazza della Liberta is the ideal starting point for your visit; have an ‘espressino freddo’ at one of the stylish cafes whilst you plan your walk around the ‘centro storico’. Ostuni has a wealth of cafes, bars, restaurants and chic shops and its narrow, pretty streets are a photographer’s paradise. The walk to the cathedral and its small piazza gives you the opportunity to stop and marvel at the magnificent façade, don’t miss the opportunity to carry on a little further to look across the vast olive groves to the coast of the Adriatic.
Ceglie Messapica is quickly gathering a worthy reputation as the gastronomic centre of the area; with a recently established cookery school, slow food movement, food festival and high quality restaurants, Ceglie is an authentic, southern Italian town with the lively ‘Piazza Plebiscito’ at the heart of its Summer scene.
Martina Franca is a beautiful, baroque town 36km from Villa Pera. The scenic drive lined with Olive groves, eucalyptus trees and the areas famous ‘trulli’ gives you the first insight into the countryside of the Valle d’Itria. The historic centre is one of the best examples of baroque and rococo architecture in Puglia. You will be spoiled for choice at lunchtime as Martina has an excellent selection of cafes and restaurants. Famous for its delicious ‘Capocollo’, a cured cut of pork, now listed by the slow food movement as a protected food product, Martina is the ideal destination for a mornings sightseeing followed by a leisurely lunch. The town hosts an annual music festival of opera, classical music and jazz in July and August.
No visit to Puglia would be complete without seeing its famous trulli. The UNESCO world heritage site of Alberobello is a popular tourist destination and offers the opportunity to see at first hand the original traditional homes, characteristic of the area. Many of the trulli now house craft shops, cafes and restaurants but some are still family homes.
More information about the local area can be found on our Villa Pera Facebook page.
