About Val F
.My husband and I travel frequently between Hilo and Oahu. I manage a community center in the town I grew up in and my husband manages the publication department for the local newspaper. We enjoy bodysurfing, ziplining, picnic bbqs, hanging out with our dogs and trying new foods. We're friendly and easy to get along with so please don't hesitate to ask questions if you want recommendations or if there's something that we can address during your stay. We're grateful for the opportunity to host you during your Hawaii island vacation.
Val F purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Val F chose Hilo
The Kaiwiki house is very special to us. We were the first family on the street to rebuild and renovate, now our neighbors have followed suit. It's our Hilo diamond in the rough.
What makes this Cottage unique
There is wide, open park with avacado, ginger, strawberry guava that is perfect for a morning walk and ideal for the kids to play ball, run around, or fly a kite. Just beyond the park is a short path to a swimming hole and waterfall.

Nice house clean easy check in and out. Only problems was our allergies acting up due to the build up of dust on the walls and light fixtures are really dirty looking. Had a trail of ants in 1 of the rooms noone ate or let food in that room so not sure what was attracting it since it was not there when we checked in. Found a few spiders inside that I had to catch and take outside. I would stay again if house is dusted. Would reccomend if you dont have dust allergies and dont mind some small spiders being inside. There is big webs in front side of the house. Other then that the owner is very responsive and contacts you prior to arriving just to remind you about check in.
Good base for exploring the East side
- location: fast and easy access to highway and Hilo center
- quiet, laid-back neighborhood
- many bedrooms, all with AC (really helpful at night - both for cooling and masking off the frogs) and ceiling fans
- many fans around the house
- comfortable beds
- parking in front of the entrance
- responsive host
- no road noise
- clean house, no smell
- two sinks outside the single washroom: more flexible
- good wi-fi.
We did not like but not a big deal:
- plenty of roosters (active during daytime) and frogs (active during night) around
- house gets hot during the day
- kitchen has only enough utensils for 4 people
- some heating elements do not work in the oven
- very brief written instructions require regular correspondence with host
- there are always a few flies inside the house.
great place, a suggestion
Everything on the property was as described! The home was welcoming, however a suggestion would be to change the blinds. This is very minor, however it would make the home slightly better! overall, would stay here longer if we could! highly recommend checking out this property!
Great bargain rental and great location!
This house was a great bargain for our family. I didn’t think it was a big deal that the house didn’t have central AC since my house in Hawaii didn’t either but the window AC units in the bedrooms were a big plus. The beds were super comfortable and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed to make a meal for the family. Like the other reviewers said there were roosters nearby but that was something I am also used to being around so it wasn’t an issue for us! The neighbors across the street were friendly, the neighborhood has a very “local” Hilo feel. If you want a fancy touristy type condo on the beach this place isn’t for you, but if you want a bargain in a great location close to everything on the Hilo side this is perfect!
Close to town car needed
Clean, spacious, and newly remodeled. Nice place. Tucked in a local neighborhood. Gives you a sense of genuine Island life. Roosters in the neighborhood so AC in the bedrooms was greatly appreciated. We slept well. Owner is great to work with.
Okay for the price
My family stayed here for 4 nights while visiting the Island of Hawaii. The house is spacious with three bedrooms each with large closets and the a/c units in each of them was a must of our family! The split bathroom with the double sinks made it easier for the five us of to get ready in the mornings. The neighbors do have a *ton* of roosters in their backyard that crow NON-stop and it was loud! After a couple of days you almost get use to it, but we were gone most days and I just wore earplugs at night.
The fridge had mold all around the seal and even some inside and the sponge used the wash the dishes smelled, so we opted to purchase our own which wasn't a biggie because they are like $1.
The biggest obstacle for us was that the entire back of the house obviously reeked of mold due to some larger unknown cause (in the basement we presumed...we didn't go down there to even do laundry because of how bad the mold smell was). This might not be a problem for everyone, but I issues with migraines and my mother has asthma.
Overall, we wouldn't stay here should we visit the Big Island again.
