About John and Yasmin
Yasmin and I are a retired couple who worked in a major multinational. I am the boring Brit, born in Hampshire, brought up in Herefordshire, and lived much of my adult life near Cambridge. - thats the real stuff, in the UK! Yasmin, on the contrary, was born in Teheran, with a Persian father and German mother speaks all sorts of languages, and lived in Hamburg for most of her life. We retired a few years ago, while based in Netherlands, and have since lived mainly in Crete, whilst buying and building this wonderful home, where we live! Its a truly unique place, with spectacular views, wonderful gardens which we’ve always wanted to share it with like minded folk. We, I think I could safely say, are a colourful pair, passionate foodies, love to cook, to entertain our guests, provide personal but discrete attention whilst recognising your needs for privacy. We know the locality, visited the sites, have eaten at most of the places, and are happy to help you to find places you might not otherwise discover.
John and Yasmin purchased this Hotel Suites in 2010
Why John and Yasmin chose Apokoronos
We holidayed in Crete twice a year from 2005, and immediately fell in love with the place – it has its own magic, difficult to define, impossible to escape once experienced! In 2009 we got the chance to leave our jobs in Netherlands and so we up sticks and moved to Crete, buying our house early the next year. The design of our house uses all modern materials, technologies and advantages, built to the highest standards. It is particularly energy efficient and is built to make the most of the surrounding scenery and spectacular views. And there’s a 12m long pool with fabulous views out over the mountains. But it follows the traditions of the Minoans, 3000 years ago –guided by our principle of “outside in, inside out”. Just like the Minoans we have designed rooms with huge windowed openings to be able to enjoy our natural surroundings and environment whilst sitting comfortably. We have arranged terraces and balconies facing east, west and south to be able to exploit the outside, whether for shade, sunshine or shelter from the breezes. And we have very high quality modern amenities, well kept and scrupulously clean.

We're not big on rules but the ambience of our home is of peace and tranquility. Its a place to relax, reflect and contemplate, or just chill out, and we ask that our guests respect this. Please be considerate, for example, in not slamming doors, and being discrete in the use of your mobile phone, particularly late at night. This is our home when not rented out and contains much of our possessions, our library, CD collection, etc and we'd like you to bear this in mind when you stay. The fertile and green region of the Apokoronas, east of the city of Chania, stretches from the foothills of the White Mountains to the Mediterranean sea. This landscape, of exceptional natural beauty, is dominated by the White Mountains or Lefka Ori, the largest mountain range in Crete with over 30 summits above 2000 m and about 50 gorges.
Crete offers a startling juxtaposition of high mountains and vivid blue seas. Landscapes stretch between deep rocky gorges and weather scarred hilltops with the silky greys of olive groves in regimented march up otherwise barren hillsides. On the lower slopes orchards of orange trees with the vivid oranges and yellows contrast with the deep green foliage. Rocky stone filled riverbeds chase their way through this scenery hint at the boulder moving deluges during the winter months, a far cry from the blissfully warm summer sunshine.
There are a variety of walks for walkers of all ages and experience ranging from a couple of hours stroll on the flat to full day out climbing tracks into the foothills of the White Mountains. There are shady trails with cooling breezes. Nature is abundant with a huge range of flowers in spring and autumn and it is a paradise for bird watchers particularly to see eagles, buzzards and hawks lazily patrolling overhead.
In the villages, particularly away from the coast, you will find places where time seems to have stood still, where there are remnants of a lifestyle long discarded by busy northern Europeans. Sitting in the shade of mulberry trees in dusty village squares in hot summer sun, with a coffee or glass of wine can give you a serenity so often lacking in stressful work and busy lives.
Many holiday makers come to Crete for the wonderful exquisitely blue Mediterranean sea and the beautiful sandy beaches. But there is something, which some would say is the more rewarding and important, that is away from all that.
