A perfect rural retreat
This is a beautiful villa which is well equipped and perfect for a relaxing holiday. The views are amazing, the pool and setting superb.
Beautiful view. Quiet. Clean and beautifully furnished. A long way from anything but that was the point. Pool gorgeous. Highly recommended.
Many thanks for the loving comments. We hope to see you again in the future.
Way better than the description and the pictures!!!
We can’t believe our holiday is over! We had the most wonderful week at the Alta Vista. We arrived late night on Saturday due to some delay, but waking up to a stunning view in the morning was worth the trip in pitch dark.
Our children 11&7 enjoyed every minute both in the pool and outside. Numerous time we went for a bite in the towns (thanks for the tips) and we were all very much welcomed by the locals in the restaurants.
The house is really fully equipped and has everything one needs in order to enjoy a stay and relax. We will highly recommend the house to all our friends and family.
Much appreciation for Laura and Micheal who were always quick in responding on our question through WhatsApp or when we phoned them. Franci and her husband also came as soon as we needed them too.
Thank you for your lovely comments. We are delighted you had a wonderful week at Alta Vista, that you enjoyed the surroundings and made very good use of the pool! It was a pleasure to have you as guests - thanks for being tidy and respectful of the property. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Best of wishes!
What can I say?
This is an extremely difficult review to write.
In almost every respect, Alta Vista deserves a rating far higher than 5*. The property itself is clean, spacious, well-equipped and designed. Its location and setting can only be described by that old cliche: idyllic. The gardens and pool area are perfect and there are wonderful views with an orientation towards the south and west.
The representatives of the owners are very pleasant and easy to deal with; and I considered the cost was very good value for money.
So, what's the problem?
At a rather trivial level, access (on extremely poor roads and tracks) is an irksome feature, but not really a major factor so long as you drive slowly and carefully (though driving there after dark might be quite a different matter!)
The big no-no, I'm afraid, was the insects. Not inside the villa, I should note; but outside. Wasps, ants, lice, flies and some other unidentified bug(s) were there in great profusion - on the terrace and around the pool especially. My wife was pursued relentlessly by the former (wasps) and I finished the stay totally covered in scars from bites and stings inflicted by the latter, unknown, creatures. Some sort of variation in our pheromones, no doubt. We did not use the Casita, but we saw that the exterior of the little building was massively infested with lice, as was the entrance gate to the property.
Perhaps all this was just a seasonal effect (September)? Perhaps it was down to some unusual climatic or atmospheric conditions? But unless you are immune to bugs or not bothered about dealing with them, I unfortunately could not in all honesty recommend Alta Vista to you.
And it's such a lovely property indeed. What a pity!
Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we are delighted that our property "deserves a rating far higher than 5*". We (and everyone who has posted a review) would agree with that. It is a beautiful place and we are so fortunate to have it.
We are simply dumbfounded by the review you wrote as during your stay, our property manager, cleaner and pool cleaner regularly saw you on the terrace or around the pool enjoying the facilities and the views. At no point did you mention "bugs and insects" to them (or indeed to us) during your stay and none of our staff saw either of you covered in bites.
The house is in a stunning rural area and it is inevitable that flies and wasps will seek water in dry times and pools in Andalucia do attract them. For that reason we always leave a pool net available for our guests use, to skim the surface of the pool if necessary. As you know, our pool cleaner is also there a couple of times a week.
What we find even odder is the fact that you wrote to us saying you had written a review but would withdraw the review if we could guarantee the insect problem and you could return to Alta Vista. You wrote " To be fair to you and the owners, therefore, I am writing this separately to say that, if you would prefer, I should be willing to withdraw the review, especially if you could give a reassurance that the insect problem might be tackled in some way. After all, we loved Alta Vista so much that we would certainly consider a return."
We do not believe any property owner can give that sort of guarantee, but as we have said before, none of the other reviewers had this problem, and we have had many guests in the beautiful house over the years and also since you stayed there. Again, none of those guests have had similar problems. In fact, many of them return time and time again, and our bookings for this year include repeat guests.
(villa impeccable)
Just about perfect
This is a wonderful rural villa with fantastic views over the surrounding mountainous countryside - a stupendous pool, great facilities and the accompaniment of goat bells of an evening! Very thoughtful supplies and no errors as far as we could see - thoroughly recommended. We had a perfect week with our (21 and 23 year old) daughters.
Although the setting is rural, only 5 minutes drive away in the small hamlet of Pastelero there are two excellent bar/restaurants serving a wide range of delicious Spanish dishes, and a bakery. Villanueva de la Concepcion is 10 minutes away in one direction while at the same distance in the other Almogia clings precariously to a hillside. Both villages have many small shops, bars and restaurants. There are markets in Villanueva on Monday mornings and in Almogia on Tuesdays. The magnificent El Torcal national park, just above Villanueva , offers walking routes around and between intriguing rock formations. Twenty minutes away on the other side of El Torcal is the historic town of Antequera with its magnificent architecture, many fine churches, Moorish castle, Dolmen caves, Roman ruins, bullring, shops and golf course. The Antequera-Malaga motorway is 15 minutes away with easy routes to Granada, Cordoba, Seville, Ronda and the coastal beaches. Malaga is less than an hour away.
