About Dan Carlson and Sheri Reder
Sheri and Dan have lived on this property since 1982. We have raised our family here, started a small farm, and been involved in civic life. We love the out of doors and are avid bicyclists and hikers. Sheri develops new long term care options for the VA and Dan teaches at the University of Washington.
Dan Carlson and Sheri Reder purchased this Cottage in 1978
Why Dan Carlson and Sheri Reder chose Vashon Island
We bought this property because it has beautiful views, excellent soil for farming, and while rural and private was still close to Seattle where we continued our professions.
What makes this Cottage unique

Great small cottage
Perfect for 2 adults and a toddler
Not super great
We booked this cottage because it said "3 adults" and we had 3 adults in our party. Although the owner reached out and said the 3rd sleeping space was meant for a "teenager", it still was advertised as housing 3 adults. There were a couple of glitches (stove didn't work without some tinkering with, wi-fi didn't work during stay) that by themselves might not have been a problem, but for the amount we paid for the cottage per night, I would have expected for everything to run more smoothly. Anna was very responsive and I really appreciated her and what she tried to do to fix the glitches.
Cozy clean comfortable
Cottage was well described and didn’t disappoint. We would happily stay again. In the extreme heat it needed a fan but I assume that would be for a very few days each year. Without a TV and fan it’s not a hang out room. But a great location for a home base for other activities.
Clean, calm, and charming place to focus!
This is a great cabin to relax in. There are some good walks nearby to stretch your legs.
Peaceful and Quiet Getaway
The contemporary cottage is located in remote surroundings but was easy to get to with a GPS (what was life like before GPS...). Our two nights went by so quickly. Yet, we were able to explore our surroundings with a minimum of fuss. Highly recommend. Our host was gracious and took the time to familiarize us with his farm Thank you again. Plenty of reading materials and NO TV (a good thing). Would stay again if opportunity comes up.
If you like open space, big sky, natural environment, farming, flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, bicycling in the countryside, kayaking, long walks on the beach or on forested trails, , this cottage experience is for you. It is quiet; it is safe. Although you can take a car ferry or a passenger boat directly to downtown Seattle, if the primary thing you are looking for is an urban experience – shopping malls, art museums, restaurants and cafes, clubs – this cottage is not for you.
The cottage is about 350 sq ft. It has a lot of volume from vaulted ceilings, and a lot of light from the many windows, and porous connection between indoor and out. It perfectly accommodates two people and can accommodate two adults and a small child, but not more. The bedroom has a queen bed and there is a roll-out natural latex topper for a child. It’s a magical place for kids that like the outdoors; they can run around without the fear of cars and traffic.
Most visitors will need a car to get to our cottage and to drive to the town of Vashon where there are supermarkets, a movie theater, and a handful of restaurants and small shops. Bicyclists, however, can do all this without the internal combustion engine. We offer a 5% discount off the rental rate for bicyclists (in the form of a refund at the end of your stay). For an urban experience your car or bicycle or the local bus can take you to the ferry dock for a 15-25 minute ride to Seattle.
The cottage is located in a beautiful field – in spring the apple and pear trees are in bloom, in summer lavender, sunflowers, and raspberries are ready, in fall grapes, apples and pears ripen. It is a place to keep the noise down so you can hear the owls at night. At the same time excellent cell reception and wifi can keep you connected to the wireless world when you want it. Our house is on the same property so visitors are not far from help or advice if they need it.
The cottage can be a weekend escape from the city, an agri-tourism visit to a small farm, a writer’s retreat, or a base for exploring the Pacific Northwest.
