- english, spanish
Hola, I´m Amanda I have been living a travelling lifestyle now for over 18 years and have travelled in many countries but still have many more to go to. I have now been based on the Caribbean of Costa Rica for 7 years and I love this peace of paradise in Manzanillo. I do not live on the property but live in the small village of Manzanillo only a few minutes walk from Casa Del Mar. I pass by everyday to check on things. My interaction with you will be as much as you would like. If you want privacy I will respect that. I have a helper who is also her to assist if I happen to be out. I will also give you information on the area and a list of things to do based on your interest. I will also plan your time here, transportation, adventures and tours to ensure you have the best guide and everything runs smoothly. I hope you choose to stay at Casa Del Mar and enjoy this Natural Paradise with us. Pura Vida

Beautiful, chill, rustic beach house
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Manzanillo staying at the charming Casa Del Mar beach house! What a perfect little beach house with everything you need to have a relaxing vacation, steps from the ocean. There are several sodas within walking distance to eat out, as well as convenient stores for groceries. We happen to have a produce truck drive by with fresh fruit & veggies also. Amanda is extremely helpful & knowledgeable about the area and will help you with any ideas for things to do & when to do them. A tour through the Gandoca Wildlife Reserve with a private guide is definitely a must, as you can walk through there endlessly, since it is a few short blocks away. It's the perfect blend of jungle & beach. We would highly recommend this house to anyone, however as it states very clearly, this is not a resort or luxury type beach rental. It's rustic & if that's what you're looking for, then you've found the best place in town.
Loved everything about our trip to Casa Del Mar in Manzanillo. Long walks on the beach with nothing but ocean, beach and jungle. Some days we could walk miles and only see a handful of other people. Jungle tour with Tino was amazing. Amanda was a pleasure and took care of our every need. We will certainly be back!
beyond our expectations!!
Amanda is a perfect hostess. These cabinas are incredible! The view is spectacular. There are bugs in this area but if you do what Amanda tells you for management of the bugs, there is very little issue. Sleeping in the net is recommended. The accommodations are clean and the garden just lovely and plentiful. I urge you to take the tour of Amanda's garden with her. We both would love to live in this place long term. Do you do long term rentals, Amanda? ;)
A REAL beach vacation!
I was looking for a quiet and laid back beach vacation for my 8 year old daughter, my mother and I, and this was perfect. The reviews I read here were very accurate. Now that I am home I miss sleeping to the sound of the ocean and the fresh breeze flowing through the casa and the sound of the howler monkeys. The casa is very clean and it could not be in a better location. It is just past the end of the paved road to Manzanillo. It is a short walk to a few sodas and grocery stores and just steps from the beach. We felt very safe when we were there.
I was expecting it to feel hotter than it did. There is a cool breeze from the ocean all of the time. At night I actually was a bit chilly a few times. It makes for great sleeping. I was never hot at night. During the day, even when it is hot, the porch is nicely shaded and there is a breeze. I did not miss air conditioning.
We brought plenty of bug spray and used it. My mother and I did not have a single bite, but my daughter probably had 50. Perhaps Manzanillo mosquitos have a deep passion for young blood; I don't know.
There were very travelers from other countries in Manzanillo. Amanda said that it is mostly Costa Ricans who come to visit and that seemed accurate to me. If you want to chat with travelers, this may not be the place for you. I certainly enjoyed getting to know a few of the locals in this tiny place and there are plenty of travelers to talk to in the nearby towns and on the bus. Amanda is also a lot of fun to chat with. She usually stopped by a few times a day to check on things.
We had Amanda book all of our tours and that worked very well. We went on the tour with Antonio, on a dolphin tour with Sherman, on a BriBri tour with chocolate making, and horseback riding. All of it was great.
I hope to return to Amanda's little casa again! There was a couple staying next to us who was staying with Amanda for the 3rd time in 3 years.
Manzanillo is a special place. I have a feeling it will be completely different in the next 5-10 years. There is still a small town community feel to this place. Unlike lots of other places I saw in Costa Rica, there were not bars on the windows. The dogs and cats running around appeared well cared for. The locals all have there places to gather and chat with neighbors. It hasn't been easily accessible to the rest of the world for long. If you want to visit, visit soon!
A Week In Paradise
If you're looking for a place that's literally "on the beach", remote and clean, then this is the place for you. Amanda was wonderful to work with. Starting months ahead of time, we worked with Amanda to plan our vacation. She managed the scheduling for all of our tours and provided advice for what we would need when we got into Costa Rica. While in Manzanillo, Amanda stopped in nearly daily to check on us and make sure that our stay was a positive one. Not that she hovered, but when you're hanging out on the front porch, it's rather easy for chats to begin.
We loved all of our tours: Jefferson was our guide on the white water rafting adventure (Highly recommend!), Abel was our guide in the forest, Jimmy was our guide on the Honeymooner horseback riding / massage (Yes, this was our honeymoon) just up the road and Becky was our guide at the Jaguar Rescue Center.
We did receive a bit of mixed reviews related to whether it was safe to drink the water. I can say that we began our trip drinking the water, but regretted it. Each of us ended up having stomach issues that we could only assume was the result of drinking the water. Amanda has a large 5 gallon bottle dispenser, which can easily be refilled at one of the local grocery stores (100 meters up the road). Use it! :O
Book with Amanda and you'll be in good hands. We are already actively considering returning to Casa Del Mar, so obviously we highly recommend this facility.
Manzanillo is such a beautiful area. You have great snorkeling in front of Casa Del Mar, hiking in Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, Sea Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, bird watching, dolphin tours, bike riding, horse back riding beach and jungle, animal rescue centers, beach bumming, surfing is not far from other towns for day visits in indigenous communities, waterfalls and national parks.
The town is a small fishing village of 320 people and does not attract the tourist hype of Puerto Viejo 12.5km away although is a popular spot for Costa Ricans on weekends, school holidays, Christmas, new year and Semana Santa. It is a real afrocaribe village. it is a 3 street town at the end of the road on the south Caribbean. Manzanillo has also been named the best beach in Costa Rica both by Lonely Planet and International Living. You can also access all beaches between Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo with a day trip on bikes.
