About Katie Howland 2
About the owners Doug, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug is a 35-year designer/builder who built this beautiful home. His youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. They built the house over a 7-year period in the late 90’s, commuting 7 hours each way from their home in Arizona. Doug now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time. They also have vacation rentals in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona and on the North Shore of Kauai.
Katie Howland 2 purchased this House in 1993
Why Katie Howland 2 chose Boulder
Doug came across this property in the early '90s. They fell in love with it not only for its beauty, but also because it is both accessible and secluded, with the Escalante River flowing through it.
What makes this House unique
There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door and within an hour's drive (see above). Look for deer and wild turkey in the meadow in the mornings and evenings and watch the cloud shadows change over the canyon walls. Head up or down the canyon into rugged wilderness, and return home to comfort.

A truly amazing stay, we enjoyed every minute. Thanks!
Beautiful home in a beautiful location
Had a great experience. The home is beautiful and the canyon it is in is amazing. The shower is awesome! The river crossing was a little scary the first time but after that wasn't an issue in our Subaru outback. The owner was great to work with giving detailed information about the house and adjusting our reservation dates. We hope to return!
Amazing, magical getaway
This guest house is the best place you can stay in Escalante/Grand Staircase. We were blown away at the beauty of this peaceful sanctuary, which literally feels like you are in the park, about two minutes from the popular Calf Creek Falls trail and literally across the highway from Escalante river trail. You feel like you have an entire canyon to yourself. Amazing views from each window, they have laid out this house to maximize your views from every room, including the shower, where you look out on red rocks towering above you. This is hands down the best VRBO property we've rented and we've been using the site for years. Doug the owner was so gracious and stopped by to say hello. This rental will not disappoint if you love hiking, solitude and beauty. Not for people who want shopping or television (although it had great wifi) but truly want to enjoy the natural beauty of the park.
A Wilderness Experience
First of all, Ellie and Doug are amazing hosts and the communication was excellent. Our "stay" was more than just 5-nights at a very nice VRBO, it was a true wilderness experience complete with solitude, red-rock canyon views, unlimited hiking out the front door, all wrapped into a nature inspired home built into the sandstone landscape. Best 5 day vacation we've had in a long, long time. Thank you Doug for sharing your place and Ellie for all the amazing info... We'll be back. Bob & Rachel
