About Mark Jespersen
We decided that a 700-year-old village house in Seillans was much more interesting to own than stocks & bonds. Come see for yourself and enjoy the peace and quiet of life in a medieval village with wonderful restaurants, small shops, and art galleries all within the confines of this car-free perched village. Surrounded by forests and nestled on a hillside in the Var region, Seillans is a wonderful place to relax. This area of France is a combination of lovely beaches, red rock mountains, the ocean, inland lakes, the Alps, canyons, fascinating cities, medieval villages, and great food wherever you go. And these are just some of the reasons why we enjoy life here in the Var. We are fairly quiet so the atmosphere in Seillans is just perfect for us. It can get a little boisterous in August, but it will still seem quiet compared to the more touristy cities and villages in France.

Why Mark Jespersen chose Seillans
Beyond the holiday crowds in the heart of Provence, or along the Côte d'Azur, the historic perched villages of Seillans, Fayence, Mons, Bargemon, Callian and many others offer visitors a relaxed pace where you can unwind and enjoy life ... once you are off the French roads of course. These are just some of the reasons why we chose this place for our home away from home for six months each year. And we enjoy sharing the experiences of those who come to rent our home each summer, as they discover life in the south of France for themselves.
What makes this House unique
Have you ever wanted to experience life in a renovated 700-year-old home? High up in a medieval perched village? Our private home in Seillans has a long history of occupants ranging from farm animals to generations of families long gone. So if you enjoy being a part of history as much as we do, then learning more about the perfumerie up the hill, the artists Max Ernst & Dorothea Tanning, the old silk worm building, the Chateau, and the 11th century church around the corner (L'Eglise Saint Leger) then you might also enjoy staying in the village of Seillans and in the Var. There are wonderful hiking trails beginning in Seillans. You can swim in freshwater Lac St Cassein. There is even a brand new sports center for those who skateboard or mountain bike. And Seillans has a public swimming pool and tennis courts. Local art galleries dot the village and surrounding area which has been a haven for artists over the years. The light here is brilliant and you can see works from the masters in many places from the Picasso museum in Antibes to the Maeght Foundation in St Paul Vence. And if you like antiques as much as we do, there are weekly markets throughout the area ... from flea markets to serious antique events. But nothing surpasses the food. Much of it locally grown and sold in weekly markets, farmer's markets, and in local grocery stores. Add the local olive oils, wines, honey and bread to die for and you may want to get a house here yourself one day. If you prefer night life and the bustle of the city, you may want to rent closer to the coast in Cannes, Antibes or Nice. But you can always go there from our place, it's only a 45 minute drive.

Away from the maddening crowd.
Beautiful hilltop village with many ancient cobblestone paths, pleasant walks without the car traffic. The property is on one such secluded path, yet just a couple minutes walk (in different directions) takes you to 3 wonderful restaurants. Also a minute's walk from the property is the wonderful village square beneath huge plane trees, where we went every morning for cappuccinos and croissants. And when we were ready to explore more famous sights, Nice and St Tropes were not a long drive. For good advice on local wine and a great selection, be sure to go to La Cave de Fayence, in the next village just a short drive away.
Perfect place to experience the real France
We had such a wonderful time here - going back to France 20 years after living there as an exchange student, I wanted my family to experience French life. This was the perfect place to do it. So beautiful and so peaceful. My little girl and I would wander down the cobbled lane ways each morning to buy bread and drink coffee in the square. There were 2 lovely restaurants within walking distance. We had a great week driving to the little villages in the the area. We had a lovely day at the markets in Aix en Provence and another wonderful day driving along the Grande Corniche to Italy. The actual house is so well-designed and so lovely - more than you could wish for. I can't recommend it highly enough!!
Alex - Thanks for taking the time to submit a review for our home in Seillans. Mark and Kim
We absolutely loved returning to Seillans each evening after touring Provence and the Côte d'Azur each day. The cottage has everything you need to have a pleasant relaxing stay. The peace and quiet of staying in a hilltop village is not to be missed.
The Perfect Spot for Our First Visit to France
Mark's friendly and informative emails prior to our visit were just the beginning of a truly wonderful experience at his and Kim's lovely home. It was clear that they had anticipated every question that first-time visitors to the area might have, and had thoughtfully provided the answers. The furnishings and bedding were comfortable, the decor was charming, the kitchen was well-equipped, and everything was clean and inviting - the pictures truly don't do it justice. And the rooftop terrace was amazing - we sat at the little table with a glass of wine, gazing out at the hills and thought, "It just doesn't get any better than this."
The village of Seillans is delightful, with a couple of good restaurants (La Gloire de mon Pere and Chez Hugo), a little boulangerie, an artists' workshop, a boule court, an olive mill, an outdoor cafe, fountains, plane trees, gardens and the famous chats de Seillans, who allow you to admire them as they sleep in the sun. It's also the perfect jumping-off point for visiting some of the other villages perched on nearby hillsides. After a day exploring gorges, 9th-century ruins or eating lunch at one of so many terrific restaurants (including one with a Michelin star), it was a real pleasure to return to our "snug harbor" in the village and relax while we planned the next day's adventures.
We can't recommend Mark and Kim's home highly enough, especially if you have not been to the area before. You will be glad you chose it for your stay, but, we have to warn you - you won't EVER want to leave.
Thanks for your review. You are too kind.
And a great time was had by all
We recently (April 15-22) returned from spending a week in this truly beautiful home. We started our days on the roof deck watching the morning mist burn off the valley and ended our days as well up there watching the sun set.The house was very well fitted with up to date appliances and even had wi-fi which really came in handy.
The welcome packet prepared by the owners was an immense help. It included everything you needed to know from how to operate the washing machine to local restaurant reviews.
Seillans is consdired to be one of the most beautiful villages in France and justifiably so. And not just in architecture or flowers. The people there are great. We went to a choral performance around the corner from the house in the village 11th century church that was spectacular. We found everyone there friendly and helpful. It also made a great base to explore the other surrounding villages and sights not to mention the proximity to the coast where there happens to be a newly built theater in Frejus with amazing proformances.
The village tourist office has an incredible collection of Max Ernst work and the staff there are knowledgable and very friendly. They recommended the marche in Muy, the largest in the region and should not be missed.
We highly recommend this home to anyone looking to enjoy this beautiful region of France. The home was spotless, had every amenity we needed and with the owners packet, really a huge bonus, we had a memorable vacation that we hope to repeat in the future.
For people who are considering our property as a future rental, we are very interested in working with you to make sure our home is exactly what you need and has everything you think it should when you arrive. A 700-year-old village house in Seillans is not for everyone, but if it is, your trip will be quite memorable.
Seillans Village House
I stayed in this village house for 10 days in February and March and found it as delightful as the owners describe. The property is exceptionally clean and well-maintained. It is nice to have a private salle de bain for each bedroom. The view from the rooftop terrace is breathtaking and it was a charming place to have a coffee in the morning (after a quick walk to the boulangerie for a croissant). The terrace gets lovely sunlight. The area has an abundance of markets for local wine, cheese, and produce and returning to this pied-a-terre in Seillans is the perfect place for a leisurely meal after a day of exploring the area. The owners have thoughtfully prepared a binder with suggestions for restaurants and sight-seeing.
It was a nice touch to find a hottle of wine from the Chateau Selves upon arrival. Thank-you!
There are several wineries in the immediate area, and even little Seillans has a Provencal Marche every Wednesday morning though it hardly compares to the Saturday market in nearby Fayence. And we have just added several other local restaurants to our suggested list. We try to find the best value matched to really outstanding food and service. There are many to choose from both in the village and a short drive away. We did install new shower heads this month, as the old ones were just not up to our standards. We also just installed a digital pipe organ, studio size, in the guest house, in case that appeals to any new potential renters.
Network of marked hiking trails criss-cross the area; Tennis on Seillans' 2 Courts (more courts in Fayence 5 kms distant); Seillans has a small Pool; Olympic Pool in Fayence; Sailing & Windsurfing on Lake St Cassien 20 minutes away; world class sailplane center at Fayence; Hang Gliding & Paragliding at Moustiers & Lachens Mountains; Horseback riding; Boule (or Petanque)Seillans' Boule Ground is just a 5-minute walk away. But if little white balls are more your style, there are two 18-hole golf courses nearby at the Four Seasons Terre Blanche just outside Fayence
