Amazing sunset with toucans and monkeys everyday!
Upon arriving to Villa Azul Jean met us and walked us up to the most beautiful sunset and a pair of toucans in the tree. A wonderful way to start the vaca after traveling all day. We stayed here for 8 nights and it was perfect for our family of 4, which included my 2 college-aged sons. The house is nice and spacious. You could easily have 3 couples and 2 more people on the downstairs futon. Plenty of space. Yes, the villa is up a hill however it is really nice to be above the canopy. There's so much wildlife to see right there. The pool, hot tub and balconies are nice. We watched the sunset and stars at night by the pool. It's fun to watch the monkeys who hang and wrestle by the pool, just don't leave your towels out- they will steal them!
Jean was great in all restaurant recommendations, setting up tours and places to go. We went hiking, canopy zip-lining, white-water rafting (which was amazing!! Class 4/5 rapids!), catamaran sunset cruise and snorkeling (fresh grilled fish kabobs were very good) and of course the beach. All restaurants and shops are an easy walk from the house. It's -6 outside here in Chicago and remembering Manuel Antonio and Villa Azul will keep me warm for a couple of more months.
Great home great location
Lovely open home with views and a nice pool. Great convenient location too!
We truly enjoyed our stay at Villa Azul! We spent 6 nights and 7 days here. We loved sitting out on the upper deck every morning and watching/listening to all of the birds while looking out over the ocean! The home is very centrally located - we walked almost everywhere. There are 3 markets, and at least 4 restaurants within a 5 minute walk (double that if you walk for 10 minutes), many of them are at the bottom of the hill (Sancho's is very convenient!). The bus stop is also at the bottom of the hill, which is super easy and cheap - we took it quite a few times to the beach and national park. Another reviewer mentioned that the home is in the ghetto... this is NOT my impression at all. In fact, the villa is surrounded by quite a few other higher end homes. There is a soccer pitch (el centro) very near by where kids play soccer every night. The Capuchin monkeys found there way over a couple of times while we were there, as well as Toucans and small parrots. We found the house to be very clean and what we'd expect in Costa Rica. Yes, there are a few bugs and geckos (which eat the bugs!). The windows and doors do not seal the way we expect them to in the US. This is what I expected in Costa Rica. The AC kept the house cool and we had everything we needed for a great stay. Jean is super helpful and greeted us with a smile when we arrived. He seems quite connected within Manual Antonio and is able to hook you up with any local tour you wish, as well as pick up from the driveway. One night, the AC condenser began to leak - I immediately contacted Jean (who was on holiday in Europe, BTW) and he had someone out to repair first thing the next morning. He was always available no matter what, before and during our stay. I will definitely look to stay here again if we find ourselves fortunate enough to visit this wonderful country again!
Glad to hear you had a good stay I was disappointed with the previous review so it's good to hear only a week after you had a good time ! Just goes to show you can't please everybody thank you again and look forward to your return.
More summer camp than luxury
Not exactly what we expected. The villa itself is a beautifully crafted home with incredible views of the pacific. The pools are a nice touch, albeit a bit dirty - the pool below is surrounded by trees so it’s expected to have some debris. However the splash pool (not heated, FYI) has green algae/mossy patches along the outside of the concrete which is quite unsightly. The inside of the villa is poorly decorated - think college dorm. Beds only have sheets and a thin worn blanket. A couple of posters adorn the walls upstairs literally with thumb tacks keeping them in place. Sheets make do as slipcovers on the couches, as the actual cushions are torn and stained. Downstairs is void of any decor at all. As one would expect in the tropics, there were ants around the villa. Not expected - geckos that live inside the walls and call to each other at night. They also make appearances and leave nice little “gifts” of poop around. Other reviewers remarked on the cleanliness of the place. We did not find that to be the case at all. There was dust on the surfaces and mold in the showers. There were remnants of spit toothpaste in the upstairs sink. The inside was also in disrepair with holes in the walls, light fixtures and wires dangling from the ceiling, and sliding glass doors that did not lock. This was troubling because the actual villa is in the “ghetto” of Manuel Antonio. There is razor wire along most of the perimeter but there are breaks where a person could break thru. With 2 young kids with us, it was a bit unnerving. Perhaps it was the time of year or the construction going on next door, but we did not see any wildlife whatsoever except for one toucan one day. Not a negative on the actual villa, but just a warning that you may not see monkeys there. Jean, the host, was responsive but also a bit dismissive (ie it’s ok the locks don’t work, it’s safe here, or it’s the jungle, you’re gonna have things crawling around). However, there wouldn’t be so many creepy crawlers around if the doors were sealed (there were gaps in the sliding glass door you could slide your hand thru) or the holes in the drywall were fixed. The A/C worked well downstairs but hardly worked upstairs.
I gave it 3 stars because of the sheer beauty of the view and the nice decks and private pools. Otherwise, I don’t feel it was worth the money.
I'm sorry that your holiday fell some way short of your expectations I have taken on board and will be addressing those concerns that you have voiced .
However I feel that some of your points about the visitation or not of the local wildlife are way beyond my control and are in fact the primary reason people visit the Rain forest and Manuel Antonio specifically.
I also believe that your concern for safety were unjustified because although internal doors may not have locking mechanism the villa is extremely secure and there is no need for internal doors to be locked.
Most importantly Villa Azul has enjoyed a lot of repeat business and many satisfied customers which is reflected in the vast number of positive reviews it receives.
In the meantime I hope that your future holidays are a great success !
My family of 5 spent 6 nights at Villa Azul and loved it. The layout was perfect for our family. The loft bedroom upstairs with bathroom was perfect for the adults with the living area/ kitchen/ half bath on the middle floor with a huge deck with dipping pool and perfect sunset views. The downstairs had 2 more bedrooms with bathroom and a whole other living area with mini-kitchen. The 3 kids each got their own bed with one sleeping on the futon in the living area. A second large deck on this level was in the trees with the larger pool deck another level below. The pool was great fun for the kids with the frequent visits by monkeys. Jean was extremely helpful with planning activities and arranging transportation and was helpful and communicative throughout the week. The air conditioning units works very well downstairs (window units in bedrooms only) and fairly well upstairs. The fans are helpful and we like to be warm on vacation, so it was perfect for us. But, don't expect ice-cold AC below 73F. The breeze is lovely when all the windows/doors are open.
The location was perfect and we were able to walk to grocery store and multiple restaurants and bars. It was perfectly situated between Quepos and Manuel Antonio with easy access to everything.
If you're looking for sterile hotel-like accommodations, this isn't the place for you. The house is in the tropics and has a lived-in jungle charm. It was perfect for us and it was clean, but expectations shouldn't be set for spic and span hotel-like sterility. The view, the layout and the location were perfect. Thanks for a great week, Jean!
Glad to hear you guys had a great time !
Loved the area, the house, the week spent. Pool, view, and proximity were key for us, monkey and beautiful bird visits a bonus. Great for a family, both adults and kids. Jean was terrific with suggestions and British sense of humor. Great combination of beach, jungles, outdoors, wildlife viewing. One bonus we didn't expect was all the great food to go with it (Emilio's we miss you already). This is something we will try to do again, scheduling is our only issue. Thank you Jean!
Always good to hear that you had a great time !
