About Lisa Hill-Pierce
I have a massage therapy business and over 22 years experience doing bodywork. I enjoy good coffee, gardening, reading, running, and nature. My husband Brendan and I have lived in the downtown area for 14 years and are happy to share what we love about the neighborhood, as well as the bay area. Brendan is an avid mountain biker and Industrial Designer. Our boys are 5 and 10 and we have a trampoline, a climbing tree and lots of other ways kids can break a leg. We have a secret latch in the fence between our awesome neighbors and our house, and all the kids in the neighborhood are at one of the two houses. We love it. Now that we have kids, hotels don't work for us. We need a kitchen, we need some room to spread out, and we enjoy a yard. It is always nice to have a little privacy as well. When we travel we love to stay in people's homes and now that we have decided to host we are committed to creating a relaxing and nurturing space. We live in the neighborhood still and will most likely be available any time you have a question or need help with something. As a couple we are just remembering what we used to enjoy doing before kids. We enjoyed traveling, walking around our city with no destination in mind, eating at quirky restaurants, art, and meeting fabulous people. We look forward to meeting you!
Lisa Hill-Pierce purchased this House in 2004
Why Lisa Hill-Pierce chose Northside
Well... we bought the house when we got married and then outgrew it as the market tanked. We still live in the neighborhood and we love living downtown. This house means a lot to us- we love the details and charm and hope you will too!

Lisa is very responsive and helpful. The property is very cute and the neighborhood is nice-no problems or riff raff. We would definitely consider it again
cute plant-filled house and helpful owners
This property was perfect! Lisa was very helpful with all of our requests and provided many baby items in the house. We enjoyed walking to Japantown and sitting outside in the garden.
Enjoyed it stay
This is a very cute and cozy home. I had a friend join me for a couple nights but spent a few nights alone and felt very safe. It is a quiet location and centrally located but did want/need to drive to desired locations. Owners were very nice and communicative. I left a personal item and they reached out me to if I wanted to coordinate getting it back.
Great spot to stay!
Cozy area private parking, within walking distance to alot of activities and convenience stores to fit your needs. The owners are on top of everything you need as soon as you need something. Would stay here again.
Clean, comfortable and secure parking
Nothing great, nothing terrible. It was just less than we expected.
The good - there is parking inside the backyard and behind a locked gate. The beds are very comfortable and the sheets and pillows are very nice. It was very clean, and we are picky about that. There are beautiful, full fruit trees. It does have a 1940’s cottage appeal.
The not so good - the kitchen is adequate. There is no ice maker, unless you want to call ice cube trays, an “ice maker”. The coffee is grind it yourself. I guess that keeps it fresher, but it was kind of a pain, and the coffee pot does not have a timer. There are plenty of dishes, but if we had planned dinners and cookouts, as we have done at many of the other vacation homes we rented, it would have been tight quarters. While the home sleeps 6, it only seats 4 at the table. There is one small TV in the living room, and a very limited selection of channels on cable; just the basic cable.
The not good - The thermostat is locked at 76. Even though the temperature was in the mid 50’s at night, sleeping at 76 is very high for us, and we did not feel comfortable leaving windows open. The bathroom is woefully inadequate. There were no hand towels, only one towel and one wash cloth per person. It was suggested we could use the kitchen tea towels. There were no extra towels for when we washed our hair. There is not a vanity or place to even set a toothbrush, let alone shaving kits or makeup. The tub/shower is very high and while it was not slippery, there is no hand-bar or grab-bar for safety to step in or out over the tub sides.
The house lists at a moderate price, but we were charged an extra guest fee for a third person. I’m not sure why we were charged an extra guest fee for a third person, when the house is listed as sleeping 6. So, all-in-all it is a 3.5 star rating, but not quite 4 (for which everything is great) and definitely not a 5-star luxury stay (where everything is high end).
If only you had read the description of the house you would have saved us both and hopefully not booked our home.
We are very clear in our listing that we limit air conditioner use. In this way we are able to keep our rate reasonable for the Bay Area which is the most expensive place to live in the country. For folks who do not wish to open windows at night and want full control of the air conditioner we provide that for an extra charge. It is an option I shared with you. We encourage windows to be open at night or limit the air to 76-78. It's often in the 50s at night even on the hottest days. After having guests blast the air with the windows open we decided to set limits, and make it clear that we do.
We are glad you mentioned the cleanliness, the well stocked kitchen with dishes for 12 people, the fresh ground coffee, the amazing beds. You used 10 towels during your short stay and complained that we didnt leave you enough towels. You stained our sheets and we returned the deposit with no question because bloody noses happen. You say that our 1937 home had an older home feel? Yes, it is an adorable older home built in the 30s. We love it and so do most of our guests. If you wanted a gated community you should have looked, and paid for that.
We charge for guests over 2. We are clear about that. If 2 guests comes they should not pay the same as 6 guests. Sorry you were upset to pay for the 3rd guest. It seems fair to pay for the guests who come. We have the extra chairs in the closet for groups of 6.
We do not have an ice maker. We have ice cube trays. We are so glad you pointed these things out so other guests can know if our home is a good fit.
The star system is not based on luxury. I imagine if what you wanted was luxury you could have looked for, and paid for luxury. You chose a modestly priced small older home in a downtown historic diverse neighborhood.
Thank you for helping us be even more clear about the home. We'd like to keep our prices moderate and still provide a cozy, peaceful, beautiful place for people to gather and rest.
Cozy and Charming
We had a great stay here with 2 little kids 2 and 4 years old. There was a portable crib, toys and books for them. The place is cozy, clean, and had plenty of room for 3 adults, 2 kids. Its in a central location to places around San jose but the house is off a busy street and the secured parking is tight to get in and out of. But it is very nice there was a driveway option for our car. Lisa was responsive when I couldn't initially get into the house and checked on us there after. That was very sweet. Highly recommend.
This is a centrally located home within walking distance of all downtown San Jose and Japantown. Close to public transportation, restaurants and cultural events.
Lots of light, wood floors and character in a home that has been lovingly cared for. House rental includes the use of 2 bikes and helmets. Enjoy exploring all San Jose has to offer!
