A perfect remote spot to enjoy the wonderful lakes! You can walk directly from the door
Clean and well equipped
Really lovely space to spend time with family or friends
We walked and swam every day directly from the house
We cooked for ourselves every day and the kitchen had everything we needed.
We got an internet delivery of all our food which turned out to be the best thing as it’s a fair drive to supermarkets.
Do take hand towels and soap as well as your bath towels as they are not provided in the loos!
Overall such an amazing spot and fabulous house I can’t wait to go back and recommend it 100 percent
Relaxing stay in Ennerdale
Lovely, well equipped property in remote area near Ennerdale Lake. Lots of walks from the property & 2 good pubs within 2 mile drive.
Would like to have been given an opportunity or details regarding recycling accessibility.
Stayed in (lovely) different property!
Due to some last minute miscommunication, we ended up not being able to stay in this property. However, Joanne was able to put us up in another house at Grasemere which was stunning both inside and out. Wonderful location with lots of nearby walks. She was always easy to get in touch with and ensured that the rest of our trip went smoothly. Would happily come back and hope to be able to visit Ennerdale next time!
A lovely old farm house located in a beautiful, more remote part of The Lake District
We were celebrating my wife 60th birthday with our children and close family members. The six bedrooms were ideal for this. Over the 3 days, most of the party climbed the local mountains in brilliant sunshine whilst the others walked at low level around Ennerdale Water etc
From first booking to coming home everything was made so easy. If you want somewhere to stay thats away from it all Routen House is ideal. Bedrooms are all lovely 2 good sized Sitting Rooms and a well equiped Kitchen.
We really enjoyed our stay at Routen house which is beautifully situated with great views. The house itself is very comfortable with plenty of space.
A few points to mention - the kitchen is adequate but could do with a new set of pans, more cutlery and selection of glasses. The large plates do not fit in the dishwasher. The fridges need attention as the door compartments are all missing/broken - however we managed as there are 2 fridges. The weather was fantastic during our stay so the children spent a lot of time in the garden which is lovely but left mostly overgrown which greatly reduces the space + a lot of stinging nettles. Unfortunately the gardener mid week emptied the grass cuttings in the stream right where the children played. Also the 2nd floor showers need attention.
None of the above spoiled our holiday and we will definitely come again.
Many thanks and already looking forward to coming back.
Ennerdale is one of England's wildest valleys. It is one of the most remote lakes, offering a place to escape even in the high season. Yet it is only a 20 minute drive from a variety of towns and areas, some of which are listed below. Ennerdale lake is a deep glacial lake, 2.5 miles long, ¾ mile wide and 148 deep. The water is exceptionally clear and contains a variety of fish. It is the only lake that does not have a road running alongside it.
Around Ennerdale, there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied.
Hundreds of walks - from gentle lakeside strolls to energetic mountain hikes
Mountain biking in Ennerdale Forest
Fishing in the lake (permit required)
The nearest village, Ennerdale Bridge, has a Post Office and General Store, a church and two public houses (both serving good food and a variety of beers, including real ale).
The market town of Cockermouth is a 20 minute drive away offering a variety of restaurants shops and supermarkets. Keswick is a 35 minute drive.
