About this property

Forest Cottage -Shaker-Inspired Tiny House ★★★★★

The Forest Cottage is designed for couples. It works for singles who want some quiet and privacy, too. If you're a couple who loves each other, we think you're going to love it here. If you're a single and are looking for a safe, quiet place, ditto.

In addition to our normal cleaning, we make sure every surface that is normally touched (handles, table tops, etc.) has a sanitizer applied according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Please SAVE us for future reference.

THE SPACE

The Bed
It's big. The cottage is small but the bed is as big as they get (king). And it's comfortable. And clean.

The Shower
It's probably bigger than the one you have at home and it never runs out of hot water. If you need "wake-up-therapy," you'll love it.

Privacy
It's tucked away in the forest so no one sees you even if you're out on your deck.

Coffee
Meaning coffee or tea or hot chocolate. We believe there's something about sitting down with a hot beverage that connects and we believe we need closer connections.

Food
Microwave, fridge, a two-slice toaster, a single cup coffee maker with a variety of coffees and teas, dishes and a separate sink. Feeling outdoorsy? Remember the gas grill on the deck.

The Window
Magnolia? You'll come home tired. This cottage is ready to pamper you and help you get ready for another day at it tomorrow. Your view is out an 8' window overlooking the forest. 2-night minimum.

The Deck
Bring some steaks or chicken and sides if you like to grill out. Your deck is private and is lit until 9:30 each night.

The Kitchen
It's actually what I would call a "kitchenette." You have a microwave, a two-slice toaster, a single cup coffee maker with a variety of coffees and teas, dishes and a separate sink. If you really want to cook, remember the gas grill on the deck.

Alexa
Your cottage comes with "Alexa" with just about every genre of music you can think of through Amazon's music library. So, whatever your mood, dial in the music of your choice.

Water Heater
The water heater is a tankless (never-ending) style so, if you're the type who likes to take (l o n g) showers, you will be in Heaven.

WiFi
We have WiFi that varies from blazing fast to not so great. I've been told we don't have control of that.

No TV
We do have a projector that uses a screen that is as wide as the window (8') that you have access to with an HDMI port. Fire Stick, Apple+ ROKU . . . but no TV.

The Gate
You'll be on our land in rural Waco. There's a gate to get in that is almost never closed. If we do feel the need to close it (never have), we'll make sure you have its code. Most of our neighbors are part of Homestead Heritage. Once you get to know them, you'll see they are a pretty wonderful group.

Attractions
You will be close to Magnolia and Baylor (about 13 minutes) and everything else downtown Waco has to offer. For a slower pace, you're about 2 minutes away from Homestead Heritage and their number-one-rated restaurant, Cafe Homestead. They now serve breakfast Monday through Saturday. Don't just eat though. There is a lot to see and do so allow some time to walk around. Their newest shop is the Basket shop where you can see beautiful baskets or sign up to make one yourself.

Chicken Tractors
The photos attempt to show you the house and the deck. We have some chickens in movable cages (called "chicken tractors") located in between the rows of blackberries.

Doug and Donna
We hope we can meet you before you leave. We always like to hear what you did and what you liked. You probably won't see us unless we happen to cross paths in the parking area or if you need something we can help with. You'll have my cell number when you get here. Please use it if you need anything.

Once in a lifetime adventure
My recent stay at Doug & Donna's charming cottage for the solar eclipse was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, it was evident that they had poured their hearts into ensuring our stay was unforgettable. Upon entering the cottage, we were greeted by the soothing sounds of jazz floating through the air. It was a warm welcome that immediately set the tone for our stay. But what truly touched us were the thoughtful personal touches scattered throughout the space. A handwritten welcome note, a birthday card (for my husband, alongside the eclipse), and delightful locally sourced baked goods awaited us. And to top it all off, a commemorative keychain and sticker to mark the occasion were unexpected but greatly appreciated gestures. The cottage itself was a cozy haven, with ample space for our belongings, including two telescopes, a cooler, and a suitcase. Despite our abundance of gear, the cottage never felt cramped, & we were able to settle in comfortably. Beyond the eclipse, the cottage provided its own entertainment in the form of a live show starring the local wildlife. The large window across from the bed offered a front-row seat to a charming performance by birds and squirrels, which provided endless amusement throughout our stay. D&D cottage provided the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable eclipse adventure. Their hospitality, attention to detail, and warm demeanor made us feel truly welcomed and cared for. I cannot recommend this place enough!

What VRBO Aspires to Be
This was the single best VRBO experience my wife and I have ever had. From the construction to the maintenance to the cleanliness to the MULTIPLE special touches, if you stay in this space you are signing up for time of peace and goodwill...and I am not exaggerating. Doug and Donna seem to have found their vocation. A five-star location that deserves six stars.

About the host

Hosted by Doug Saylor

Host profile image
We're Doug and Donna Saylor. Donna and I were high school sweethearts in Odessa. We got married in 1972 and it just keeps getting better and better. All our kids and their families live close so we enjoy getting to see everyone fairly often.

Donna is the Mom of the cottages and makes sure everything is just so. She's also a grandma and that can take priority over everything.

I am semi-retired as a graphic designer. So, on a typical day, I'm working in WordPress and PhotoShop. Grandpa work can take over any time, though.

The Forest Cottage used to be my detached office. When our church needed places for people to stay for an international symposium, I decided to convert to a tiny house. Since then, I have added the Blackberry Cottage.

Why they chose this property

This is where Donna and I live. We planted a blackberry vineyard and decided to set a tiny house there to look out over it. Our property is wooded so it is easy to feel like your in the middle of a forest when you are actually on the edge of it.

What makes this property unique

Because we are out of town, we get all the beautiful birds and other wildlife. If you get to a place where you can just watch out over your deck, you will see some of our birds. Cardinals, painted buntings (our favorite) and squirrels will be there every day.
