Why Joe Fuhr chose Meadows of Dan
It's really peaceful up here. Although it's convenient to so many things in the area, this cabin has a quiet, secluded feel to it. We have most amenities people are looking for, but the cabin has retained an authentic rustic feel and charm.
What makes this Cabin unique
One unique benefit of this cabin is it's construction, as well as it's location on the property. Only a few of the cabins in the area, including ours, are made of hand-hewn hemlock. Our cabin is also situated in a private location, with a long hillside sloping up on the east, and trees on the north and west. On the west side of the cabin, the trees slope down to the river, with mountain glimpses through the trees west of the river. It feels quite secluded and peaceful.

Valentine’s Day get away
We came down to this lil cabin for a relaxing get away. We were blown away by how wonderful, clean, and cozy this cabin is. We were able to go into downtown Floyd and to Chateau Morrisette quickly and easily. Absolutely loved this place and will definitely return!!

Welcome back anytime.
Our cabin is cozy and comfortable. The cabin is an authentic, hand-hewn hemlock cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Meadows of Dan, Floyd, and less than two miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's privately situated on a unique property with other cabins scattered around; our particular cabin is in a private location with tall trees bordering two sides, and a hillside bordering another, to offer plenty of seclusion. Parking is immediately adjacent to the cabin, with no hills or stairs to climb (other than 2 steps leading to the front porch).
The cabin has wood floors, a private master bedroom with a queen bed, chest of drawers, and a closet; a great loft with a queen bed, single bed, hand-made walnut futon, and a reading nook; a full kitchen with dishes, pots, pans, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster; and bathroom with walk-in shower and a full size washer and dryer. The dining area has a solid walnut table and benches that seat six.
The living room has a a cozy gas fireplace that's easy to operate, a comfortable sofa, coffee table, rockers, 39" cable HDTV, free WiFi, and a Bluetooth stereo speaker. We have some DVDs available, plus lots of books and board and card games.
There's space for five to sleep comfortably here - a queen bed in the bedroom, with windows looking out at the trees, and a queen bed, single bed, and futon in the loft. All linens are provided for your stay.
One of the best features is the large wood deck off the back of the cabin; it's quiet and comfortable, with rocking chairs, a bench, and a charcoal grill. You can put on a playlist, sit and relax with a good book and a cup of coffee or glass of wine, and enjoy.
On the grounds of the cabin itself, are acres of mowed fields and gravel roads to walk, run, bike, and walk your dogs.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than two miles away from the cabin. Lovers Leap is on J.E.B. Stuart Highway, only a couple of miles away, and has some of the most picturesque views around. There are several antique shops, country stores, and farmers markets in the area. Mabry Mill - which seasonally offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner - is one of the most photographed landmark on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is just a two miles from the cabin. The mill still grinds flour more than a century since its original construction. Near Mabry Mill, you can also see the Matthews Cabin, blacksmith shop and interpretive area, as well as demonstrations on blacksmithing, carding, spinning, basket making and other traditional Appalachian crafts.
Visits to local wineries such as Chateau Morrisette and Villa Appalaccia are a must. Less than a half hour away, visit the town of Floyd, grab a craft beer at Buffalo Mountain Brewery, moonshine at Five Mile Mountain Distillery, a cold beer and pizza at Dogtown Roadhouse, handmade chocolate at Cocoa Mia, or visit the country store and listen to live Bluegrass music. Just a little further away, enjoy local meaderies and cideries. The musically inclined can spend a few days at FloydFest - the cabin is one of the most convenient spots to stay if you're attending.
There's tons of things to do outdoors, including hiking the trails at Rocky Knob, Fairy Stone State Park, and climbing Buffalo Mountain. The Rocky Knob recreation area covers more than 4000 acres. Four trails offer a variety of scenic and historical wonders. The Rock Castle Gorge trail descends over three miles into the backcountry camping area in the bottom of the gorge. The strenuous and rugged nature of the trail reveal part of the reason this pathway was given National Recreational Trail status. Fred Clifton Park, a couple miles up the road, has awesome views of the northern Blue Ridge and diverse bird and butterfly watching. Kayaking and canoe rentals are available near Floyd, and Buffalo Mountain Ziplines is only a few minutes away.
The cabin is an easy drive to Martinsville to catch the NASCAR races. Stuart is a beautiful drive about 20 minutes from the cabin, while bigger box stores can be shopped in Galax, Christiansburg, and Martinsville.
