Lila was amazing. With having 3 dogs it is hard to find a place to rent. Camp SMOGR was totally pet friendly and absolutely beautiful. It was very peaceful and always nice to unplug and get back to nature. We loved it as well as the dogs. They loved being free, running and taking them for a walk was nice cause you didn't have to worry. There are so many nice things to say about Lila and Camp SMOGR.
Amazing weekend in an amazing place
Loved it here once again. Will keep coming back for more!

Expensive One Night Stay
Lila is a wonderful host friendly and thorough and her cabin is very nice...cozy, clean and the property is lovely. Everything you need is there in the cabin utensils, coffee maker, dishes, cutlery plus condiments, hot chocolate, umbrellas etc. We booked for 3 nights and it could've been great but we had to leave after one night because the weather brought the flies and we were inundated inside and out. Check for rain before coming to this area especially in warm/hot weather. This is a cabin, NOT a house so there were breeches in windows and doors that flies continually found their way in even with the inside windows closed and locked. We experienced a swarm of cluster flies at the kitchen window as it poured on Tuesday morning. We arrived on Monday afternoon but had to leave by Tuesday evening because of the flies. I understand from communication with the owner that this was happening in the wider area. So be vigilant about either checking the weather for your planned dates or bring a lot of insect spray. I would also advise taking the trip insurance offered by the site for this turned into a VERY EXPENSIVE one night stay ($460!) with no partial or token refund offered except a free night with a multiple night booking in the future. We understood the details of the cancellation policies but under the circumstances we thought a small refund (one night) was appropriate since it wasn't the rain but the failure of the cabin to keep the flies out of the living space that forced us to leave.
It's a nice cabin with plenty of books and DVDs and limited aerial tv reception. Though very isolated, there are neighbors visible in the vicinity and the area is beautiful. If the weather hadn't brought the flies we could've managed with just the rain but the insects inside the cabin made it a terrible experience. In good weather I'm sure it's a great place to stay. The property has a great backyard for horseshoes, bocce or lawn darts (bring those yourself) and a nice fire pit which we couldn't light because of the wet from the rain. Also there's a wood burning stove and propane heaters so I'm sure this cabin would be an enjoyable experience in cold weather when the threat of pests is gone.
Off the Beaten Path
This was a nice home off the beaten path which was lovely. Lila was wonderful and friendly. The cabin was stocked with all kinds of brochures and pamphlets on the area. She also had lots of maps for various activities. For hiking, I would definitely recommend having a map as trails sometimes aren’t as well marked as one would hope. This is the country and as can be expected there is well water.
I was raised on well water, but this was a bit smelly and hard. I suspect that could be remedied with softeners and some technology to make it more desirable. It wouldn’t stand in my way of staying again, though. Fridge was stocked with water and we brought our own.
In the places we explored and hiked, Barbour Rock Trail offered the best view of the canyon. We hiked the West Rim by following Pine Creek Outfitters to Refuge Trail and then they deposited us further down the West Trim Trail. We hiked back to the car 7-8 mi. Great hike with nice vistas.
It was nice to come back to SMOGR after a day of hiking and relax by the fire pit. Its a very comfortable private place to stay.
I'll look into further steps to improve the water beyond the filter system already in service. Glad you had an enjoyable time hiking Canyon Country!
Cozy warm and inviting!
Lila is a fabulous hostess. She waited for our arrival after our travel delay! The cabin is great! A nice wood stove with plenty of firewood and a unique location at the top of the hill! Nice kitchen with bedroom and bath nearby. I recommend you book this gem!
So glad you fellows enjoyed your stay. I love that special location, too. So peaceful. Hoping you can return next year.
