Country house with stunning rural setting close to Melbourne
About Jim Handley
Hi there, my name is Jim. I was born and schooled in Melbourne. As a teenager, I moved to Queensland with my family where I worked in the tourism and aviation industries for many years before returning to Melbourne. I have a lovely wife, Kara, three adult children and a new grandson. Our family are all passionate about the environment. We are working hard to restore the local eco-system at our property and district.
Jim Handley purchased this Farmhouse in 2015
Why Jim Handley chose Bungal
We had travelled through the region on a road trip in 2015. On our return to the city I researched the area and found what was a rundown former plant nursery. We bought the property and set about the arduous task of repair. Over the years, we have researched the history of the property and district. Being on the river adjacent to the little known gorge, this place would hold special significance to the First People of the area, the Tooloora clan. If you sit quietly by the river, you might feel the presence of the people that trapped eels and recounted the songlines for millenia. There is also a more recent history to share of the Gold Rush of the 1850's. Our road is located on one of the original tracks to the goldfields diggings to Ballarat. Being on the river, the diggers would have camped on our property.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
You will see by the photos that the veiw is magnificent. As the property was a former plant nursery, there has been a lot of Australian natives planted to form a safe nature walk. Kara takes great pleasure picking fresh native flowers for the house.

An escape to the country
This is a comfortable house with quality furniture, appliances and utensils. If you enjoy a tranquil country setting then this place is for you. As the listing explains it is important to understand that the house is in a somewhat isolated location hence a trip to a shop or out for a meal is a 25-30 minute drive.
We had a wonderful 2 nights but would have love to stay much longer!! The house and surrounding are amazing and Jim was very responsive and helpful.
Highly recommend for a quiet and beautiful place to bound with you beloved one.
Beautiful relaxing getaway
My partner and I stayed here for a mini getaway. Everything was amazing from the property to the beautiful surrounds. Jim was so lovely and accommodating to our requests. The peace and privacy were exactly what we wanted. Highly recommend! Thanks again Jim!
A wonderfully relaxing experience, in an absolutely beautiful home, surrounded by stunning views!
We had an amazing girls weekend away filled with walks, wine and wilderness. The pictures don't do the home and surroundings justice. It's a rural paradise with a home fitted out with quality fittings that you would find in a country style magazine. Do yourself a favour and organise a break at Kara's, take a book, some gumboots and enjoy this magical place.
Bungal is located within an easy drive(by Australian standards!) to Moorabool Valley wineries, famous surf beaches, historic Sovereign Hill, the Daylesford Spa country as well as the Gold Rush city of Ballarat with its famous galleries, restaurants and lake.
Make sure to bring some hiking boots to explore the untouched Bungal State Forest with its wildflowers and old growth forest.
Our favourite is to enjoy a day at Ballarat for the country shopping and a beer at the heritage hotels. There is so much to see!
