About Sophie Zalokar
Sophie Zalokar is an accomplished Chef and Food Writer. Sophie was born and raised in the Barossa Valley in South Australia and trained with Australian food icon Maggie Beer at her and her husband Colin Beer’s famed restaurant, The Pheasant Farm after which she went on to travel and cook around the world that included fund-raising events for the Anchorage Opera in Alaska. Sophie has contributed to & featured in several of Maggie’s books, written for Homes & Living magazine, provided a weekly recipe in The West Australian for the past 9 years and in 2002, her first book, ‘PicNic – Outdoor Feasts in the Australian Landscape’ was published and short-listed for the Jacob’s Creek World Food Media Awards and Vittoria Australian Food Media Awards. Sophie’s second book ‘Food of the Southern Forests’ was published by UWA Publishing in October 2014 and has recently become a finalist in two categories in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. At the beginning of 2005, Sophie and her family moved from Fremantle to a 19-acre smallholding with holiday cottages in Pemberton within the Southern Forests region of Western Australia. With the assistance of a federal tourism grant, Sophie and her husband Chris opened Foragers Field Kitchen & Cooking School in April 2011, offering residential cooking school and dinner events throughout the year, promoting the culinary heritage and produce of the Southern Forests region. Whilst juggling the demands of farm animals, vegetable garden & fruit orchard, teenage children, accommodation and dinner guests, deadlines [greatly aided by her favourite relieving glass of local Marsanne Rousanne!], Sophie’s work as a chef, food writer, teacher and produce judge is underpinned by her commitment to nurturing honest, flavoursome food created with a deep respect for the land, primary producers and local food heritage & culinary traditions.
