About James & Tara Overton
He was born in South Dakota. At a young age his parents introduced him to Virgin Islands on a family vacation trip. He fell in love with Caribbean blue water and the serenity of the islands. He have lived on all three islands for 31 years. He chose St. John to be his home as the island optimized what he had always dreamed about living in a tropical island with beautiful white sand beach, tradewind breezes and amazing views. He was one of the general contractors to joined and completed Western hotel resort in St. John and Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas. He had fulfilled his dream by building Mandavilla Properties (Alexandra Cottage, Ylang Ylang, Ginger Thomas, Mandavilla Rose and Mandavilla). James met Tara in Charleston, SC. They fell in love and together they personally operate these properties and share this beautiful piece of island with you.

We were a little disappointed at the beginning as the location shown on the map is not the actual location. It technically is walking distance to town but it sits on top of a VERY steep hill with a busy road at the bottom. The place itself was nice and clean with all the amenities we needed, I would recommend bringing your own beach towels though the ones provided were not very big. Tara was great and very sweet to work with! Also there is no pool with this cottage despite what the other reviews say. Overall good stay, thank you!
We are thrilled to know you enjoyed all of the amenities and cleanliness of the cottage. The cottage sits on the perch of Pocket Money Hill. The location is conveniently close to town but the hill separate us from the bustle in town. I think you appreciated the tranquility, secluded location of the cottage and beautiful unobstructed view of the water but yet walkable to town. Google map is a bit challenge on the island as many roads do not have street sign and it could be misleading at time. The road up to the property is a bit steep but wide and nicely paved. Unlike many roads on the island require a vehicle with 4WD. As for your first St John experience steep and narrow road is normal for St John as the entire island are hilly. Our listing for the cottage stipulated no pool access for this property. Some of our previous guests have used the pool next door on their own volition or permitted when the property was vacant. It was my pleasure to meet you and looking forward for your return visit to the island.
Fantastic weekend adventure!
This was a lovely little cottage nestled I. The hills above Cruz Bay. The property had everything we could have wanted and more - from beach supplies (towels, chairs, coolers) to restaurant recommendations. You definitely need a car - preferably something with more than 4 cylinders. Would definitely stay again!
Great views! Responsive Host!
Great views, well equipped cottage! Only drawback is it is high up a hill and we found that a car was needed!!
Beautiful cottage with sweeping views of Cruz Bay and St. Thomas. Close to town but has a relaxing, secluded feel. Morning coffee as well as stunning sunset views on the deck, the perfect way to start and end your day. Tara made the entire process very easy, it’s clear she truly cares about your experience. We will definitely book again!
Off the beaten track was this delightful cottage with so many lovely details. Wish we could have spent more time!
Another Wonderful 3 Weeks at Alexandra Cottage
My wife & I returned March 7th 2019 from another 3 wonderful weeks at Alexandra Cottage. The Island infrastructure has progressed significantly from last year. Power, Internet, and telephone service has been restored as well as a major clean up at the many beautiful beaches.
Jim & Tara are exceptional hosts and have put incredible thought and money into updating their property. Beautiful flowers and shrubs have been re-planted and are meticulously cared for by a wonderful gardener. The beautiful surroundings are further enhanced by a spectacular view of the harbor. Having breakfast on the deck while watching sailboats and ferries was a daily treat that we both enjoyed.
I highly recommend any property that is owned and managed by Jim & Tara. They truly care for their guests and are genuinely great people.
75% of St John island is National Park Reserve. You will find many beautiful natural beaches, ruin and hiking trails.
