A wonderfully equipped private and spacious house in the countryside
About Andy Herrod
Hello and thank you for looking at La Pagerie. After falling in love with the Poitou-Charentes region of France we set about looking for a suitable property - which didn't take too long. The real work then started with a lot of development work required on the house. This has been great fun and my family and I have spent many great holidays at La Pagerie, exploring the local villages and attractions. We look forward to welcoming you to La Pagerie.
Andy Herrod purchased this House in 2003
Why Andy Herrod chose Sompt
As soon as we arrive at La Pagerie we relax and start to enjoy the better things in life such as peace and quiet, fresh air and good wine. We always return from La Pagerie feeling refreshed and ready to face the normal day to day challenges again! La Pagerie is situated in a quiet hamlet but within easy access of two beautiful market towns.

Great house and garden in quiet rural location
We had a fantastic stay at this lovely house.
The house is incredibly spacious with three very good sized bedrooms and plenty of living space with the added bonus of the games room which we used a lot in the evenings.
The garden is huge and big enough for us to be throwing frisbees around quite happily with the kids.
It’s well equipped and the owners were very quick and responsive with any questions we had before the booking.
Really there is nothing to fault. We wanted for nothing when there and it’s incredible value for money.
Thanks for allowing us to stay and would certainly not hesitate to
Book again if we were
To stay in this part of France again.
Marcus and family
Very impressive home with all the home comforts you could need.
Large house and a comfortable stay at 'la pagerie' the property is very private and there is plenty to keep you occupied. The garden is large, not overlooked and safe for children.
perfectly rustic retreat
Fantastic property in a sleepy hamlet but only a few minutes drive from Chef Boutonne and Melle with all local amenities. Beautiful enclosed gardens and wonderful country walks to restored Lavoire in Sompt.
Even though we didn't get the weather we had a wonderfully relaxing break.
Wishing we were still there!
An excellent family oriented property that was oustanding value for money.
We have stayed in Gites for the last ten years and this one has been the largest and most well equipped that we have used. We were made very welcome on arrival and received good communication before and after our stay. The gite was extremely spacious and the best equipped facility that I have experienced with a large enclosed garden that would be very safe for children. We used the gite as a base for exploring the area and visiting friends that live in France. There is much to see in the Charente Maritime and the owners provide some good written material on use of the Gite and local facilities. We would certainly return for a holiday using this gite and without doubt would highly recommend it to others. Thank you so much for enabling us to enjoy a brilliant time in France.
Great Country House
La Pagerie is a beautiful house surrounded by countryside. There is plenty of room downstairs, including large living area and dining areas, good size kitchen/diner plus a games room. There are three double bedrooms, all of which are en-suite. The finish on all the rooms is excellent and you'll feel at home in all seasons. There is a large garden at the back and there are plenty of places to explore from this excellent base. I thoroughly recommend staying here.
You are not far from the Atlantic coast, with it's superb choice of beaches and fish restaurants. La Rochelle is a very popular day trip choice, with Royan and the surrounding area providing some unspoilt, family friendly beaches.
The nearest airports are Poitiers or La Rochelle with Nantes and Bordeaux also being within easy reach. Car hire facilities are available at each of these destinations.
The ferry ports of St Malo, Caen, and Le Havre are within between 4.5 and 5.5 hours drive from the house. Calais is a 7.5 hour drive. Travel congestion from any of these ports is rare!
The house is located between the towns of Melle and Chef Boutonne, and both of these can be reached in between 5 and 10 minute drive. Within a couple of minutes walk you can find yourself walking along the river Sompteuese and the wonderful views and wildlife. The local chateau in Javarzay is about 5 minutes drive away, with a lake, fishing and plenty of grass to play on.
La Pagerie is the perfect base to explore the beautiful region of Poitou-Charantes, and below is a selection of attractions within easy reach:
Melle - the Romanesque town Melle boasts medieval chateaux, art treasures, a weekly market on a Friday and the old silver mines which are well worth visiting. The town also has a good selection of bars and restaurants, along with supermarkets and boutiques.
Chef Boutonne - with it's 15th century fairytale Chateau Javarazy, park and fishing lake. This market town is a short drive away and has a weekly market on Saturday mornings.
La Vallee des Singes - a great family day out, with 350 free roaming monkeys and 30 different species to discover. You have direct contact with the animals and a feeding schedule allows you to plan your day in this nature park.
Futurscope - near Poitiers has futuristic architecture and pays homage to the technologies of tomorrow. See 3D films on the giant, flat, circular or spherical screens featuring dynamic cinema, new video techniques and virtual pictures. 2006 has seen the park introduce new attractions that will expand your horizons.
Marais Poitevin - known as 'green Venice', is France's largest collection of man-made waterways, covered with waterlilies and irises, and is the second largest area of wetlands. The leisure elements of the area are mixed and varied with walking, horseriding, cycling, boating, fishing, birdwatching and many more. Explore the area by boat perhaps taking a guided tour on a 'platte', or hire a canoe and make your own way through the waterways.
Cognac - home of Hennessy, Remy Martin, Martell and a hundred other makers of Cognac. Take a distillery visit or discover the architectural heritage by visiting the Château and Saint-Jacques Gate and Priory of Saint Léger.
