About Martyn Lewis
Margaret and I are a retired English couple who fell in love with this part of Tuscany after vacationing here several times. After buying L'Olmo in 2000 we both gave up our jobs in London to enjoy the lifestyle and friendship of the local people and decided to share it with others as much as possible. We are here for most of the summer and spend our winters in the UK and travelling to visit other parts of the world we have not yet seen. We have been married for 53 years and have two children and five grandchildren. We have lived most of our lives in England but also spent 10 years living in the USA.
Martyn Lewis purchased this Farmhouse in 2000
Why Martyn Lewis chose Dicomano
We originally bought L'Olmo with the intention of using it as a holiday home. But we found that the more we visited it the more we wanted to be here and so we found a way to spend more of the year here by sharing this wonderful house and location with family and friends. Anyone who is looking for a very special holiday will certainly enjoy this undiscovered part of Tuscany with its green hills and friendly people. We both love sharing our experiences and local knowledge in the hope that it will somehow enhance our visitors' enjoyment of the area. One of our American friends recently summed it up well as, 'urban comfort, rural charm'.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
L'Olmo is well situated to reach and enjoy other parts of Tuscany. The local villages of Londa, Dicomano, Vicchio and Rufina offer a diverse culture of local life and are very welcoming to visitors. Our local region known as The Mugello/Val di Sieve was chosen by the Medici for their summer homes and as the best place to make wine and olive oil. Florence is just 40 mins by train and other interesting Tuscan towns such as Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Pisa and Arezzo can all be reached in about an hour. After a day travelling and enjoying the bustle of these busy towns it is always nice to return to the peace and tranquility of L'Olmo and enjoy a glass of Chianti while watching the sun set over Florence.

Rustic farmhouse in an absolutely stunning setting
Lovely, rustic farmhouse in a secluded location with absolutely stunning views. The pool was immaculate and kept the kids entertained all week while the view did likewise for the adults. We spent the majority of the day either around the pool or sitting on the covered veranda area which was very pleasant. The kitchen is very well equipped and could easily cater for a legion or two.
Very easy and straight forward booking process and Martyn was always quick to reply to questions and in response to requests for advice. Once at the property he was equally helpful and played the perfect host in being always at hand to help but never intruding.
Despite being close to a couple of modest sized towns this farmhouse does have an 'entertaining' road up to it that makes this not the kind of place if you fancy nipping out to the shops every morning and twice whilst cooking dinner - however this is a perfect place to go to get away from it all and relax in a lovely setting. The view of the hills and valleys is simply stunning and will literally stop you every time you see it. We considered heading into Florence which is very accessible thanks to the local train station but were only put off by the heat at that time of the year and having young children in tow.
Would go back again without a doubt.
A fantastic stay at a marvelous location
The road to the house was a bit rough the first time; but the house and the view was worth it all. Our hosts did an excellent job and offers a house that is nicely kept, clean and offers all the room and space you could need.
They were always available if needed and helpful beyond what could be expected. Only the best recommendations from us.
The house is extraordinary place on the hill side and offers an amazing view from most of the garden and pool area.
Beautiful villa in Tuscan mountains
Martyn and Margaret were wonderful hosts, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay at L'olmo.
We had booked L'olmo for a special birthday celebration and Martyn and Margaret had kindly offered to prepare a meal on arrival, which was delicious. They also arranged a birthday cake and throughout our stay, helped with restaurant bookings. They provided lots of useful advice and suggestions for day trips and eating places in the local area.
The road up to the villa is a steep 10 minute climb, but the views are breathtaking and well worth it. When we arrived, our kids immediately jumped into the pool, and played with the inflatables that Martyn and Margaret had thoughtfully provided. The pool was fantastic, surrounded by lavender bushes, which attract lots of butterflies - a wonderful sight. The grounds are vast, with lots of play areas, a badminton net, table tennis and cricket set. After which there is a hammock to relax in (or swing) when the kids wished. The kids also loved seeing the sheep being herded by the sheepdogs and the very kind shepherd.
The villa itself is superb, and well cared for. It had everything we needed, with lots of thoughtful touches including fresh herbs, home made olive oil and a well stocked larder, which we replenished as we used. As we stayed for two weeks, the villa was cleaned, and beds changed on the middle Saturday. Something we have often had to request and sometimes paid extra for, on previous holiday rentals.
To get the most from your stay, we would recommend speaking to Martyn and Margaret in advance, although we also found they were easy to talk to throughout the stay. The location is a good base to explore Tuscany, such as Florence, Siena, San Gimigano and others you may not be familiar with.
Wonderful Tuscan family retreat
The L'Olmo farmhouse was a wonderful setting for a superbly relaxing holiday with plenty of very comfortable accommodation for three generations of our family. The pool is perfect and the view outstanding. Kids and adults alike were thrilled to see a deer run across the bottom of the garden and we all enjoyed the daily sheep crossing. The great hosts organised for their friend Marie to cook us some wonderful Italian meals and booked us into a great local restaurant where we had a very reasonably priced delicious meal. Thanks for everything!
Beautiful peaceful setting, helpful hosts
Our stay at L'Olmo was wonderful. Martyn and Margaret were perfect discreet but helpful hosts, and the house was full of Italian character, beautifully looked after, and cool inside! The views down to Florence were stunning and we loved the profusion of pretty butterflies, orchard fruit trees around the house, and a decent sized pool to cool us down. Highlights were Martyn's wine tour and lunch in the Tuscan hills and a trip to Florence. But mostly we enjoyed relaxing in a beautiful peaceful Italian setting and would thoroughly recommend the house to anyone wanting a lovely Italian holiday, in the Tuscan hills with helpful and friendly hosts. Thank you Martyn and Margaret.

For intercontinental guests we suggest using European gateway cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Milan and Rome. with connecting flights to Florence. We can assist with the logistics of all flight options.
Travel - Trains:
For those wishing to arrive in Florence by train the Eurostar service throughout Italy is very fast and inexpensive. You can arrive in Florence by train from other European cities connecting through Milan or Turin. There is an excellent local train service into Florence from our local station, Contea/Londa which takes 40 mins.
We recommend using reputable international car rental companies and thoroughly checking the small print for any excesses and extras to be paid locally. Locally the best options are to be found at Florence Airport but there are also car rental companies located near Santa Maria Novella railway station in the centre. However driving in Florence centre can be challenging if you are not used to it. Either way we will provide detailed directions to L'Olmo including SatNav info. Personally we use Waze and find it works very well in Italy.
The village of Londa is 10 minutes by car, and other local villages of interest include Dicomano, Vicchio and Rufina are all reached within 20 minutes. Florence is one hour by car or local train service. Siena, San Gimignano, Pisa, Lucca and Arezzo are all recommended to visit and can easily reached by car.
L'Olmo is approximately 2 hours by car from either coast. The best beaches are at Viareggio on the Mediterranean coast and Rimini on the Adriatic coast.
We can arrange visits and tastings at local wineries; lessons in Tuscan cooking, hand painting pottery and many other activities by request. For bikers there is a very good local shop where you can rent road and mountain bikes very reasonably by the day or week.
All this information will be found in our House Book and we are always on hand to provide advice and guidance on local travel, activities, markets and shopping. We want to make your L'Olmo experience as enjoyable and stress free as possible so please do not hesitate to ask us anything at any time.
