Great apartment in wonderful town
We (2 adults and 2 children 8 & 10) spent a week in this apartment. We booked on the strength of the reviews and were not disappointed in the slightest! The apartment is spacious, well-appointed and brilliantly located - you get an amazing view of the town with the ability to walk into it very quickly. We were there at the end of July and it was very warm (but not extreme heat) but we found the apartment cool and well equipped with fans and air coolers (which we didn't use) for a typical Italian summer. The third floor location means you get a great view of the town and the stairs are not onerous.
Soriano itself was great, we loved it. It has everything you need, with a good selection of restaurants, bars and ice cream. It feels like a proper town (it's full of interesting shops selling useful things), and was very friendly and we felt instantly comfortable. It's very well located, we did the day trip to Rome, visited the Monster Park and went to Spoleto and Lake Bolsena, but we also had a couple of rest days, just hanging out at the apartment and in Soriano and they were probably everyone's favourite days! Daniela was extremely helpful and prompt in dealing with all communication. We found the whole experience faultless and would definitely like to go back. Thanks very much!
Thank you so much for leaving us such a lovely review, I'm so happy you all had an enjoyable stay with us and felt so at home! Receiving your comments are very much appreciated and we look forward to hopefully welcoming you back at some point in the future. Best wishes, Daniela
Lovely apartment, but not really suitable for Italian summers!
Great location, stunning views and lovely, well-appointed apartment (6 flights of stairs & no lift! So we’re much fitter now!!) Also no WiFi.
We did however have a few issues with the heat in a top floor apartment with no aircon! (especially as we had a 7-month old baby with us). Daniela was very helpful and DID equip us with 2 extra fans but even at night, the temperature still never dropped below 30 degs! She IS going to get a new air cooler installed but we don’t think this will be sufficient to cope with the summertime heat in Soriano.
Despite all that, we loved our time there!
Dear Anne, I’m so sorry that you arrived during an extreme heat wave this year but happy that you loved your time with us despite the weather. I’m afraid holidaying in Italy during the summer can on occasions bring exceptional temperatures, however I must stress that we have never had any complaints in 9 years regarding the heat and the majority of our bookings are throughout the summer months. It is an extra hot summer this year, I’m currently writing this from an apartment in the UK with an inside temperature of 30 plus.
We have never had and so have never advertised air-con (or WiFi for that matter just yet) at Apartment Oleandri for this reason, although I can appreciate with a baby of only a few months, even with the extra fans provided, for some this can be uncomfortable, so thank you for sharing your comments with us as all feedback is very much appreciated. Yes, I’m afraid our stunning views come from being on the top 3rd floor, we like to see it as allowing for that little extra overindulgence at our fantastic local restaurants. All the very best, Daniela.
Immaculate, large modern open and airy apartment
This is a fantastic find in a lesser known part of Italy. The flat is on 3rd floor but has a large light open area lounge and diner including two large sofas and French windows onto a small balcony. Two adequate sized double rooms and two bathrooms complete the deal. The flat is spotlessly clean and very well maintained with quality fittings. Parking is outside. The owners are very helpful and just a text away if you need help.
It is our second visit and we loved the flat, location and Soriano and its friendly people.
Looking at the picture the Cathedral spire is to the right of the castle and this fronts the town square. Between you and the town is a very deep valley in which a local shady park with fountains and café is located. A 6-8 minute walk up the hill to the right brings you round the top end of the ravine and into the town square. There are 5 or 6 good Bistro's in the town, we make a point of visiting them all. They are all good value, basic Italian food and ample portions so beware.
There are some shops within a few minutes walk for essentials and green groceries. The Co-Op is a 5 minute drive away and there is another smaller supermarket in the town.
Soriano is a UK undiscovered gem at present. Unlike Tuscany it is not overpriced and real value for money. A coffee in the town square costs 1.5Eur not 3.5Eur.
Rome is close by, either the local train (2 hr scenic route from the Station 3 mins walk away) or 40 min express from Orte Station and costs 5-6 Eur each way.
Nearby there are 3 large lakes to visit within 20 - 40 minutes by car and the coast about 1 hr away. The large town of Viterbo is also Just 20 mins west and there are numerous hilltop towns to visit like Orvieto, Terni or even Perugia. In August lots of local events, markets and fairs take place in the local villages.
We booked an overnight Air BNB away and drove down to Versuvius and Heraculeum (3 hr drive) which was on our bucket list.
During High season for a week or so there are evening events down in the park with live bands, some tribute bands (Queen and Dire Straits) were excellent. if you are old and crotchety and want to sleep buy 10 this may be a slight issue and you will want to shut the doors. If you are like us, old and not so crotchety, you will either want to walk down and have a relaxing drink and perhaps a meal in the park or sit on the balcony with a bottle of local wine and enjoy it. Frankly this is a gem of a find.
Thank you so very much for leaving us such a detailed and lovely review. We're so glad you enjoyed our apartment and our wee gem of a town as much as we do! Until next time.. Best wishes, Daniela
lovely spacious well equipped apartment
A lovely well presented, well equipped apartment with a fabulous view over Soriano. The apartment was clean and the goodies on arrival were well received. A lovely and comfortable place for a base to explore the region.
Grazie Lynda for leaving us this review. That view is pretty special, isn’t it?! I am so glad you both enjoyed your two week holiday with us this September discovering our beautiful area of central Italy. I hope to hear from you again at some point in the future. Kindest regards, Daniela
A week in Soriano
We spent a family (2+2) Holiday week in the flat at Soriano and our only regret was that we did not book for two weeks. Firstly, the 3rd floor flat is very large and spacious. It was Immaculate and spotlessly clean with a modern airy feel. Frankly the brochure pictures do not do it justice by any means.
Our reception was great with a welcome basket containing some local produce. The flat was located opposite the main town and a few minutes’ walk around the top of the ravine brought you to the centre where all the locals we met were very welcoming and friendly. The flat has free parking outside as well as a restaurant just next door!
There were several good and reasonably priced restaurants in the town plus pizza and gelateries etc. Prices Generally were much lower and the food better that those encountered the following week in Chianti.
A small local shop is located a few hundred meters down the hill and a green grocer just up the hill. The main CO OP supermarket was a 4-minute drive down by the football stadium for stocking up.
We went to Rome by train for the day (35 mins) and parked at Orte station for a couple of Euros all day. Staff very helpful and it could not have been simpler. Going after lunch avoided the main heat and rush and we found plenty of good reasonable restaurants for an evening meal after sightseeing.
A short 20 -30 minute drive gave access to one of three lakes to spend the day with all the usual amenities and plenty of pedaloes / swimming for the kids
The Etruscan tombs at Tarquinia on the coast were well worth a visit as was the local Museum.
The Castle / Gaol in Soriano is only open weekends and strangely there is a room containing a large collection of record and cylinder players charting the development of recorded music in the 19th century. A local man gave a very detailed talk on the development of recording, demonstrating first-hand the improvements by playing the machines. It was in Italian but I could get the drift of what it was about and it was a truly fascinating discovery.
Frankly this was a brilliant Holiday in an unspoilt and I guess largely undiscovered part of Italy. I would recommend this property and location unreservedly and we will be going back in a year or two, I just hope it’s not already booked.
Thank you so much Richard for being great guests and for taking the time out to leave us this lovely detailed review. I am so happy that you and your family enjoyed a ‘brilliant holiday’ exploring our unspoilt region of Tuscia and I am glad you all found our hometown of Soriano to be a welcoming and friendly place. We very much look forward to having you back in a year or two, when there will definitely be availability for you! As you say, hopefully next time for a longer stay.. Best wishes, Daniela
Nestled between Rome, Tuscany, Umbria and the Mediterranean Coast, Apartment Oleandri in Soriano is situated within a prime location to explore this relatively undiscovered corner of Italy, the stunningly beautiful region of Tuscia, in northern Lazio. Less than an hours’ drive north of Rome, 15 minutes from the historic papal city of Viterbo and 90 minutes south of Florence.
Soriano nel Cimino: Standing at the foot of central Italy’s Cimini Mountains, the pretty hill top town of Soriano offers a great variety of local amenities; banks, petrol stations, excellent restaurants and bars, all within a short walk from the apartment. The local supermarket is a minutes' drive away. When staying in Soriano guests can truly discover authentic Italian small town life at its best.
Only a few minutes out of town and standing 1,150 metres behind Soriano is the vast wooded Nature Reserve of Lake Vico. Winding roads with spectacular views take you to the ideal place to escape the summer heat, for a swim in lake Vico, seasonal walks and picnics in the woods of La Faggeta or to the excellent restaurant/gelateria located at the entrance to the wood.
Viterbo: Northern Lazio's principle town of Viterbo (15 minute drive) is one of Europe’s best preserved and most beautiful walled medieval cities. Once the seat of the Papacy, the 13th Century architecture of Viterbo’s Papal Palace remains the symbol of the town to this day. The charming medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, the oldest part of Viterbo, is a series of pretty winding streets, inner courtyards and small piazzas dotted with antique shops, artist studios, restaurants and bars. Viterbo also offers a great selection of designer shops together with its handy larger hypermarkets on the outskirts of town. An area famed for its hot sulphur springs, Viterbo houses the famous health spa, Le Terme dei Papi, for those after a little pampering.
Recommended city day trips; Rome:70km Viterbo:12km Florence:160km Orvieto:40km Spoleto:70km Perugia:100km Assisi:60km.
NB Although we do recommend the use of a car when staying here, especially for exploring smaller towns and villages, many of our neighbouring cities are best accessed by rail. The train station at Orte (15min drive) is a rail hub to all major destinations throughout Italy, for example Rome's central Termini Station takes just over 1/2 an hr.
Lazio's Lakes: Our superb lakes provide excellent beaches to suit all tastes. Lake Vico's peaceful location high up in the woods creates the perfect setting for lazy days on secluded volcanic sandy beaches. A small selection of good cafes and restaurants plus water sports are available. Plenty of picnic areas with BBQs are dotted around the wooded shoreline.
The stunning crystal clear waters of the larger Lake Bolsena (30 minute drive), provide a number of great stretches of beach ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts. A large variety of good bars and restaurants line the shorelines of the medieval towns of Capodimonte & Bolsena.
Lakes; Vico(15km), Bolsena(35km) and Bracciano(40km).
Medieval Villages & Towns: There are an abundance of picturesque medieval towns to explore in our area, a few not to be missed include; Caprarola home to the stunning Palazzo Farnese and Bagnaia famed for Villa Lante and its grand gardens. For it's beauty and unique setting, The Dying City of Bagnoregio is also a must see. As is Bomarzo's Park of Monsters.
Recommended village day trips; Caprarola:15km Bagnaia:6km Bomarzo:10km Montefiascone:20km Bolsena:45km Tuscania:40km Civita di Bagnoregio:15km. Calcata:40km
The Coastline: Lazio's stunning coastline is within an hrs drive from Apartment Oleandri, offering sandy stretches of beach to rugged bays. The nearest beach is at Tarquinia Lido, a 40 min drive. Slightly in land is the Etruscan town of Tarquinia, famed for its archaeological sites and relics. The Tuscan coastal towns of Porto Ercole, Porto S. Stefano and the islands of Giglio and Elba are also reached in over an hrs drive.
Recommened beaches; Tarquinia:40km Santa Marinella:60km Montalto:50km Talamone:70km.
Local Swimming Pools: There are two pools close to the property; The sulphuric Terme di Orte (15 min drive), a large open air complex with restaurant and bar ideal for families & La Molinella, a smaller complex in Soriano itself. Aquafelix at Civitavecchia is the largest waterpark in the area.
Local Events: Each town and village celebrate their own unique festivals throughout the year, mixing Catholic heritage, ancient customs, music & culinary traditions; e.g. Montefiascone's Wine Festival on 1st-15th Aug and Viterbo's impressive Macchina di S. Rosa on the 3rd September. Soriano's most famous Chestnut Festival is celebrated throughout the 1st 2 weeks of October, bringing visitors from far and wide. Enjoy medieval parades & fan-fare while joining in the wonderful celebrations held in the local tavernas.
Please see our website for more information on local events.

Ciao a tutti! My name is Daniela and I am lucky to have been coming to Soriano nel Cimino and the surrounding area of la Tuscia my whole life. We are an Anglo-Italian family based in Sussex, England. We have long family ties with this beautiful town through my father, where we continue to spend our holidays with family and friends. Our two properties advertised on here, Villa Casa Renata and Apartment Oleandri are both used as homes away from home, and so ideally fully equipped with all you could need for a long or short stay. We hope you enjoy this place as much as we do.
Daniela purchased this Apartment in 2010
Why Daniela chose Soriano nel Cimino
Apartment Oleandri is located in a sought-after area of Soriano. Once the location of one of the town’s top hotels, the apartment building looks out onto the most stunning view, which is one of the main reasons we bought and renovated this spacious property. It is now a modern, specifically designed space for family living, with a large open plan well equipped kitchen, ideal for home cooking and socialising. We have our own allocated parking space, however the apartment has the advantage of being a short leisurely walk to the heart of Soriano. An ideal stroll to browse the local shops and produce and stop off for a delicious coffee and pastry at our local, Bar Roma. Or returning from an evening after a superb meal with plenty of vino, in one of Soriano's many restaurants.
What makes this Apartment unique
This area of Italy, known as La Tuscia, is one of the country’s hidden gems. Although Italians have been visiting this area for years, few non-Italians have discovered this diverse region of northern Lazio and its many festivals. We love to spend warm Spring and Summer days lounging by the lake, Lake Vico for a more peaceful and relaxed vibe or Lake Bolsena with its many bars, restaurants and water sports. And after all these years we still love to visit and explore this area’s array of medieval towns, I recommend the unique town of Civita di Bagnoregio as a must see. Back in Soriano you can live like a local and immerse yourself into an authentic Italian community. With our local knowledge of the area we are more than happy to recommend places to visit, restaurants etc and shopping tips.
