About this property

Secluded 15th Cent. Manor House with a large pool in a landscaped setting

This Norman Manor has been a family home for 3 generations and has original features dating back to the 15th century when it was built. Despite its age it has light and airy interiors, and It enjoys a peaceful setting in a very private location in the Broglie forest. It was restored to a high standard some 20 years ago, with modern interior fittings, in harmony with the original timber beams, and traditional brick and flint construction.

The fittings are in the French country house style with fabrics on the bedroom and living room walls chosen by the owners, who are interior decoration specialists. The mature gardens are carefully landscaped, and the fine extensive lawns stretch to the edge of the forest. A particular feature is the large 13x 5.5m pool, set away from the house, behind hedges surrounded by flowerbeds. Next to it is the pool house with a thatched roof and half timbered construction. There are flowering climbers on the walls, and inside a leisure / games room by the pool with a bar and a separate bathroom

The entrance hall leads to dining and breakfast rooms, and also gives access to the stair case All 5 bedrooms are on 1st and 2nd floors; each has a private bathroom with wc, bath or shower. They are airy and light, but have good traditional shutters on the windows as well ! The main bedroom has a unique bathroom, and a private study with a single bed. The internet Wifi facilities are located here.

The ample living room has a large traditional fireplace, and comfortable armchairs and sofas. There is a drinks cabinet, and fine furnishings. There is direct access to the garden where the owners often lunch or dine in the summer months. Right next to the living room is the dining room which seats 10. It has a large table, comfortable dining chairs, bookcases and a TV. There is also an unused fireplace backing on to the one in the living room

Next to the dining room is the breakfast room, separated by a work surface from the kitchen. It has all the expected modern amenities, with cupboards for glasses and cutlery. The separate pantry is where cleaning materials and crockery are stored. It also has a washing machine with a separate dryer. From here the back door leads to the small herb garden and the large parking area.

The extensive gardens are a delight with attractive vistas and well maintained lawns. Some distance from the house is the large swimming pool and next to it is a pool house with a thatched roof. It has a leisure area, bar and bathroom with a shower and WC.

This is altogether a unique and exotic property ... which will enchant children and adults alike

Not far from the manor house is a baker, butcher and newsagent, all located in the period village of Broglie (7km).

Further away (12km) Bernay has a wide range of shops and supermarkets and some antique and traditional craft shops which are well worth a visit. You will also find other points of interest: mediaeval churches, shrines and ancient houses in and around the town. A feature of the town is an excellent market on saturdays, where the fish and meat produce are particularly gooid, as well as local charcuterie specialities

Wonderful week
We had an wonderful week in your tast´fully´ decorated house. Enjoyed the gardens and played all sorts of outdoor games. Specially the heated swimming pool was a joy every morning. In the evening we lit a blazing fire in the cozy living room. Yes, a fabulous holiday with the ten of us.

Stunning location, beautiful grounds, utter peace
We had a lovely week in Broglie. The house is magnificent, the grounds extensive - the children loved to cycle around them. The pool is ample big enough, and the pool house makes for a convenient place to dry off and change (and has a fridge to chill your post-dip drinks!) Mme Paysant, the housekeeper, was a delight, charming and welcoming, and lovely with the children. Nothing we asked her seemed too much trouble. The house itself is large and very much feels like a 15th Century Manor House, as billed. Big rooms, open fire places, the four-poster was magnificent. It was a little quirky at times; it felt like the owners had left on their own holidays that morning, with pictures and things around the place, even a few ties and spectacles in one of the wardrobes, but that just added to the homely charm! Some of the electric circuits took some getting used to; you have to switch on a wall switch to activate the sockets so you can switch on the standard lamps, for example. These are the only reasons it gets 4 stars, not 5 - amongst the possessions left behind were some tablets, so we had to block off a couple of drawers to keep the children away from them. The surrounding woods are also extensive (you could quite easily get lost in them!) and contain deer, owl, rabbits and mice. And probably more, but our 5 & 6 year olds were quite noisy!

I am an economist, educated in England, but live in Mexico, even if I make frequent visits to Europe. My children now have their own homes, so we now happily invite guests to share the comfort and pleasures of the houses we have enjoyed for many years - and, God willing, will continue to do so ! We live much of the time in Latin America, mostly in winter, and speak Spanish and Portuguese fluently.

I travelled as a child, and later too as an executive in the banking and investment industries. My wife and I enjoy entertaining family & friends, and share a keen interest in history, current affairs and older civilisations both in Euroope and Latin America.

I once played sports - occasionally well - fencing and tennis in particular. But now just some golf from time to time. Friends also call me a cook / food enthusiast & linguist, even if I am also inclined to music, our local church, philosophy and particularly to History

My wife is French / Italian and enjoys art, politics and literature She is a successful former banker, but then became a magazine editor of some note. She now enjoys writing articles on contemporary Art & Architecture, and enjoys movies, politics and European classic literature.

My mother in law is a highly regarded interior designer, & has won many commissions in France and Mexico. She has inspired much of the charm and harmony in our homes

Why they chose this property

This is a unique and lovely manor house. We were drawn to it for its atmosphere of peace and seclusion. The Manor House was built in the Norman style over 500 years ago. We enjoy its location in woods and fields which, like the house, have barely changed in centuries. But the garden has been thoughtfully landscaped with the house, and the ensemble has created a unique, timeless feeling of 'la vieille France'

But if the setting is traditional, the fittings are modern and comfortable ! The decoration, the design of the pool and and pool house, and landscaping of the grounds were all carried out to a high standard. Guests will enjoy a unique combination of comfort and old world charm.

The railway station is 12 km away, and 15 minutes beyond is a motorway to Paris and Caen.

I am sure you will enjoy this gem of a property as much as we do!

What makes this property unique

The manor house is a unique, traditional building, and an ideal place for guests to relax comfortably, and enjoy its peaceful and rural surroundings. If then more adventurous, guests can enjoy the benefits of local historic, gastronomic and sporting activities. The walks nearby are fun, and for sport there is tennis and golf nearby. Further afield, and if sophistication is sought, then Deauville, Honfleur and the Norman coastline are close by

Today Normans take great take pride in their historic heritage, coupled with a love of food, and drink. Guests can sample such produce, and enjoy the wide variety of goods on offer: fresh fish, charcuterie, lamb & beef, cheese, cream, apples, cider & Calvados - all local delicacies are typical.

Our friendly housekeeper comes for an hour or more daily (except w/e) to clear the living and kitchen areas . She will welcome you on arrival, & help with any information you need. She is a good cook, & can also buy and prepare meals - you settle such arrangements directly with her. She is an efficient and kindly lady, with a family, and maintains the house & garden to a high standard. We have known her since her childhood, and is part of the family. Please treat her well !
