About Richard Nother
Richard and Esperanza met in London in mid 70's. Esperanza studied art at the Royal College of Art; Richard played with both Joe Strummer and John Lydon in various bands of the time. They moved to Granada in 1988, having restored the ruin that they had found at the foot of the Alhambra. With their children leaving home, they decided to convert a section of the house in to two independent apartments. They still live in a seperate part of the house. Esperanza, an active artist with regular international exhibitions of her paintings and sculpture, has a ceramic studio off the patio. Some of her work is used in the decoration of the apartments. Richard is still involved in music: both playing and producing musical events. They are both more than happy to share their extensive local knowledge.
Richard Nother purchased this Apartment in 1985
Why Richard Nother chose Central District
Having decided that we wanted to move from London to Granada we couldn't believe our luck when Esperanza's brother sent us a photo of a dilapidated ruin at the foot of the Alhambra. We had wanted to live in the centre of the city, but to have found a property in this perfect position was more than we could have hoped for. Perched on the side of the Alhambra hill with views to the front overlooking the city, and behind us a green swathe of the Alhambra woods we couldn't have asked for more. Just pedestrian cobbled streets in the neighbourhood, which suits us fine. Bird song for car horns is our preference, yet in 5 minutes you are in the centre of the city with the necessary shops bars and restaurants. We renovated the house and had space for a ceramic workshop for Esperanza.
What makes this Apartment unique
The apartments really do combine two apparently opposite characteristics. We are right in the historic centre of the city with bars and restaurants 5 minutes walk down the hill, yet at the same time we are tucked away in a quiet (and safe) traffic-free area. Three minutes walk up the hill brings you to the Alhambra woods with its running water, bird song, and deliciously cool respite from Granada's summer heat. You have absolute privacy during your stay, but we are on hand to help out in any way that we can. We want you to enjoy your stay here!!!

Perfect location with an excellent host
The property is the perfect location for sight seeing in Granada. A very short walk from the Alhambra and close to many wonderful places to visit. The property was a very welcome sanctuary after a long day with a very comfortable bed! Richard the host enhanced our stay considerably with his wonderful advice - he was a true gentleman - thank you Richard.
Lovely characterful apartment in an excellent location adjacent to the Alhambra and near the cathedral. Close to the busy main streets but at the same time this was quiet and tranquil. Perfect for an undisturbed sleep at night.
Richard and Esperanza were welcoming and helpful with good advice on local entertainment, sights, walks, shopping , etc.
Esperanza is a ceramic sculptor and she was happy to show her studio and explain her processes.
We had a very relaxed and enjoyable visit.
Charming in Granada
This place was totally charming! It’s in a great location. You can walk to everything or take the little red buses. The owner was quick to respond to my questions and extra needs. Even on very warm days the apartment stayed cool. I loved all the art decorating the inside and the patio. The kitchen was bigger than I thought it would be and was easy to cook in. The challenges were sleeping in a full size bed when we are used to a king size bed. The bathroom needs a more thorough cleaning.. You also need to be in good shape to climb all the stairs. After our 3 week visit my legs are much stronger. We would totally go back in the future!
Richard was the most helpful host! His suggestions on places to go and how to get there in Granada absolutely made my trip. The place is lovely, quiet, and impeccably clean. It is a short walking distance from absolutely everything, especially the Alhambra. I loved getting to meet Richard, his family, and his town.
So glad you enjoyed your stay Bowen. Have fun in Jerez!
This is a very special place to stay. The apartment is beautiful. The neighborhood (3 minutes to the Alhambra) is perfect. But most of all the hosts Richard and Esperanza are incredibly helpful. They know their city inside and out and they can tell you so much about Granada and what to see/do there.
I stayed in several cities over my three month trip through Europe. Granada was definitely the highlight.
Thank you Richard and Esperanza!
So glad you enjoyed your stay Christine. All the very best, and do hope we meet up again.
We had such a wonderful time in Granada and this apartment made it even better! The location is incredible, just below the entrance to the Al Hambra, but nestled into a quiet hillside. Our hosts were such a delight! Richard was a great communicator leading up to our stay and Esperanza was warm and welcoming once we arrived. The space was comfortable and the courtyard was an added bonus. Thank you both for adding to our excellent Spanish trip!
So glad you enjoyed your stay in Granada!. All the very best, Esperanza & Richard
Please note that if you have restricted mobility, our apartments are probably not for you. Access to the house is an uphill walk, followed by 35 steps up to the house.
Nearest beach at Salobreña, a 45 min drive. Other good beaches on Granada coast at Calahonda (1h15), sea fishing at Carchuna (1h10), scuba diving La Herradura (1h20). Best night-life found at Almuñecar (1h15)
If you have time, we highly recommend a 2 hour drive to the unspoilt beaches within the Natural Park area of "Cabo de Gata" in Almeria. Take refreshments with you to these beaches as the protected coastline has neither bars, shops or hotels. Accommodation easily found in nearby San Jose.
Granada is NOT a car-friendly city! If you come by car we recommend using a car park for the duration of your stay, except for any trips to local beaches, mountains, villages etc. The carpark we recommend is close to the city ring road, and just a short taxi ride from the apartments. Granada is nearest airport 25Km. Regular buses from airport to town centre or taxi (approx 25€). Malaga airport is 130Km. 1h 45min journey time.
