Villa in Riolo - Bagni di Lucca, Lucca Province, Tuscany, Italy - Peaceful Location, Mountain Walks With Bagni Di Lucca 15 Minutes Away
About Brian Cave
We are Brian and Deborah Cave and we moved to the Bagni di Lucca area in 2007 with our two boys, following the sale of our business in England. We decided to start a new life in Italy and live ‘La dolce Vita’. We had been welcomed with open arms by our fellow villagers and although we have since returned to the UK, we are still overwhelmed by the hospitality and friendliness of everyone that we have met. We decided to buy two additional properties to renovate and rent as holiday lets which we have done so successfully for a number of years. We want everyone who stays in one of our holiday homes to have a fantastic time, experience this wonderful area of Tuscany without paying a small fortune to do so and feel that they have received a good service with value for money.
Brian Cave purchased this Villa in 2003
Why Brian Cave chose Bagni di Lucca
Having fallen in love with Bagni di Lucca, we found an idyllic area in the hamlet of Riolo - one of the many mountain villages that make up the commune of Bagni di Lucca - and decided to build our own holiday home. The spot was absolutely perfect, set in 3 acres of unspoilt country side. We have a property sitting in its own wildlife park with the occasional visit from deer, beautiful birds of prey catching the thermals as they soar high above the house and the seclusion and peacefulness of being with one's own thoughts.
What makes this Villa unique
Perfect for an away from it all holiday or an active holiday for walkers as the property is reached by car or on foot via its own no through track. As the house is set on its own in 3 acres of countryside and woodland it is the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday. It's not too far from the town of Bagni di Lucca, only 10 minutes down the hill and a 5 minute walk from the main village of Riolo.

Fabulous location but issues with the property
Access: our hire car struggled with the very steep and narrow drive especially after it had rained. If we had known we would have got a 4x4
Cleanliness: Superficially clean but not had a thorough clean in some time (had to clean the heated towel rails and the downstairs shower and all the poolside furniture).
Insect net only on one window in the twin room which needed to be left open in the heat but was right above the bed heads risking sitting up and hitting your head.
No net curtains on the front bedroom windows (shown in the photos) would have helped reduce the mosquitos.
Light over the dining room table didn’t work.
Umbrella on the patio broken.
Hot water in the shower was intermittent.
Loved the wildlife all around but not sure what the noises in the roof were!
Ideal for nature lovers
Well equipped comfortable villa. Very secluded, ideal for nature lovers. Lovely swimming pool and seating area. Monia and Vittorio were very helpful, as was Debbie. Bagni di Lucca is a delightful little town, just 20 mins drive away, and the restaurant at Graniola is superb. We had a lovely holiday, and would definately recommend Orchard Heights to anyone that enjoys the simple pleasures. Thankyou. Juliet and David Fox
We had a wonderful stay at Orchard Heights. The villa and its amazing grounds made for a perfect relaxing holiday and the housekeeper, Monia and her husband were always on hand and so helpful. The property is someway up the hillside and in quite a remote spot but it was perfect for us. The track to the property was initially a bit daunting but we did master this after a few days.
The villa is very well equipped with a lovely kitchen and modern bathrooms, and the large pool and poolside seating area are perfect for an afternoon in the sunshine.
We saw plenty of deer and wall lizards around the property during the day and fireflies at night, but our favourite part of the stay was leaving the bedroom shutters open at night with just the insect screen covering the window and watching the stars....really beautiful!
The information given regarding supermarkets, restaurants and local attractions was very useful, and would recommend "Il Birribisso" restaurant in Granaiola, 5-10 minutes drive from the property.
Every year we pick a villa somewhere in Europe to stay with our grown up children for a family holiday/catch up, and I have to say this is one of our favourites to date :-)
Thank you for your kind words Angela. Brian and I are delighted that you had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed your stay at our house. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon!
When you arrive to Riolo and see the track to to the villa you think that why on earth someone has a house down there - but when you arrive to the house you understand :) With your own, private villa and pool there is no hurry to do anything, just enjoy Italian feeling.
Thanks to Monia and her husband, house was clean and everything as promised as we had two families with 3 toddlers and one teenager.
There is no air-con but it wasn't problem as it was nice breeze through upstairs in the night time.
As Brian and Debbie wrote, Il Birribisso offered great food and was nice drive from the house.
I recommend the villa for anyone who want's to enjoy private villa, pool and Italian wine instead of busy bar right next to hotel. Just be prepared - the track to the house may be scary at first.

This has a wider menu and is popular within the local area with residents and tourists alike. They also provide a pizza take away service.

There is also a large barbecue which is a great experience to mingle with the local residents and soak up the Italian lifestyle.
Throughout the summer months many mountain villages in the area host their own fiestas, providing foods indicative of their area. A marvelous and exciting way to see and experience the real Tuscan life.
