About Derek Light
Derek grew up in DC, and I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit. Derek graduated and came to Chicago for a job. I came to go to Columbia for music. I still play guitar and sing, although not as often. Live music is my thing, so if you are looking to see some bands while you are here, just ask. We love meeting new people, and really enjoy travelling ourselves. I raised 6 kids in Bronzeville and loved that we had access to all of these cultural activities of the city. It is so close to transportation, and yet not as congested. The neighborhood is really on the rise right now, and it is fun to see it start to have more retail, a new grocery store and other amenities. I am a full time real estate builder/developer. I love to travel also, run, read, ski, and spend time with my six kids aged from 7 to 24. I really love meeting new people, and I love my city (although I am a transplant from the Detroit area). We are all very active, and I moved to the North side about three years ago. My second son is currently at UNH getting his doctorate. My two middle children are adopted from Ukraine, and they are both avid skiers and skaters. I have seven year old twins who I think will be the musicians of the family. I am a musician, and came here to go to Columbia college for music. My partner Derek is from Virginia and has three kids of his own, so we are a large loud family, but it's a whole lot of fun.
Derek Light purchased this House in 2006
Why Derek Light chose Grand Boulevard
I lived here for six years, and when we moved I just couldn't let it go because I really thought I would want to come back one day. Renting was tough because it was a large house and somewhat overwhelming to most. My neighbor has had a B&B across the street for over three years, and it was really his success that gave me the idea to give the B&B thing a try.
What makes this House unique
I fell in love with the grand staircase when you walk in. The large open rooms, and the sheer size of this house. I had so many great parties here when I was living in the home. It is really a wonderful house to entertain in. In the summer I love the terrace for dining, and soon we hope to have a second patio on the West side of the home.
