Private estate, minutes to the beach
About MELODY DEAN
I returned home to the Island in 2012 and have a wealth of knowledge of the island not just as a local but also returning repeatedly each year as a tourist! I will happily advise you on walks, meals out, where to go (or not go) and assist where I can to ensure you have a memorable giving you all the privacy you'd expect on holiday here too.
MELODY DEAN purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why MELODY DEAN chose Totland
The walks on the doorstep are beautiful, even in winter with stunning sunsets over the Needles from own grounds, its cup of tea time and watch the sun set even in November at 4pm ! Its impossible to describe how stunning the views are, with such a wide landscape view here. Whether its been the snow, rolling mists, the autumn and winter sunsets, the rain clouds, the views and colours to the landscape change daily. There have been many days in winter when all was so calm it looked as if someone had painted me a seascape as a backdrop from the grounds. Yet its spot the tourist here as so many seem to be put off winter breaks. But if you are looking for a rest, walking holiday his is an ideal spot. If you wish to see no one for a week its quite easy to do and just take in the winter sunsets, empty beaches for a walk. If you visit here and don't have a camera, beg and borrow before you come to stay... It really is an artists, walkers, photographers or nature lovers paradise. It also attracts many doctors, therapists and clergy here to stay, seeking that quiet week away One couple booked two weeks and said it was the most therapeutic holiday they had ever had . Its nothing short of a great retreat for someone wishing time out of the rat race, simply to meditate or to paint, walk or i always have a smile on my face living here too.

Thanks Don for the review and your bookings this year and the alum bay cat figurine. It was a very blowy wet end of season weather system that passed through in your stay this autumn, worst i have seen living here last 7 years. Hope you are now enjoying some sun on your Madeira trip!!! Hope to see you again next May in the sunshine, With my planned National garden Scheme open days, a sunny spring is what will be very needed for the gardens and grounds to be its best...
The place itself was all right, it was the owner we ended up having an issue with. Towards the end of our stay we had a problem with the shower. After taking a look the owner declared it to be our fault. This we strenuously denied (and still do) but we could have saved our breath for what good it did. We are in our late 60s early 70s but it felt like we were back at school being lectured to by an over-zealous head mistress. We've stayed in many places over many years and have never experienced anything quite like it, it actually bordered on the bizarre. She went on and on and managed to ruin what had been, up until that point, an enjoyable holiday. Neither of us wanted to stay any longer than we had to and so we packed up, re-scheduled the ferry crossing and came back home a day early. We were determined not to give her any reason to complain and so before we left we purposely made sure to leave the place in good order. Anything that we'd used was cleaned and put away, work surfaces wiped, bedding was left neatly folded on the bed, towels stacked in the bathroom. All rubbish was disposed of in the correct containers, the accommodation was tidy, nothing was out of place, no breakages and nothing was missing. We needn't have bothered. Some time after we got back we received a message from the owner informing us that she was keeping part of the security deposit that we'd paid (over the disputed shower fault) and because we hadn't hoovered up and hadn't put glasses back in the cupboard the right way, she was giving us a chance to explain ourselves before deciding whether or not to keep the rest of the money. It was at this point that I had to remind myself that we had actually paid for this holiday and we weren't just the hired help. I don't know if she was expecting some sort of confession, if so she was going to have a long wait. We'd given our side of this whole sorry saga and weren't about to change our minds. After the way that we'd been treated and considering she'd ruined our holiday, I was in no mood to explain anything. I'm normally very polite but I'm afraid I couldn't help myself and wrote back and told her what she could do with her deposit.
The best location on the island
Fantastic stay. Well placed and very private. Easy to walk to Alum Bay so you’ll save yourself the hassle of trying to park. Nice walk up to the Needles from the cottage and various other public footpaths within reach. Owner is great and very accommodating and helpful. If it’s fun and it’s happening on the island, she knows about it. We’ll be back and will recommend. Thank you for making our trip amazing.
Hello Jon thank you for your review, it was lovely to meet your family, I do try to accommodate and see guests all have a great stay here. Right weather helps of course too ! It was great to see Poppy so happy with the child penguin themed bed i set up for this year. Its the first time i have accepted children over 5 and extra adults too so glad i got it right on the cosy level for her. Hope to see you all again, when the slow life over here beckons...that boat trip off got harder and harder for me. Such a peaceful way of life still over here. Say Hi to Poppy

Amazing cottage in a stunning location
Loved the cottage comfortable, relaxing, very clean. The location is amazing! Melodie couldn't have been more helpful. It has everything you need! Perfect place if you looking for a place away from busy world. Would definitely recommend this accommodation. Definately worth five stars. Thank you Melodie
The famous coloured cliffs of Alum Bay, with pebbled beach is under 10 minutes walk to the beach. There is a boat trip (seasonal) out to the Rocky crops called The Needles. The pebble beaches of Totland are only a 5 minutes drive or 25 minute walk over the Warren, from our gate. The sandy beach of Colwell Bay is a 10 minute drive as is the stunning sandy beach and beautiful waves of Compton Bay. Fossil hunting is good there and surfing and wind surfers common too. Also great for a long walk...
Only 10 minutes from the Lymington Ferry terminal. Approx 30 minutes to Cowes or 40 mins with traffic to Fishbourne ferry. A bus stop is 5 minutes walk away and goes via Yarmouth ferry to Newport where other buses connect to all boat access to the Island. The Old Hayloft is tucked off a private road off the Alum Bay Road, just beyond Freshwater / Totland.
The Old Hayloft is only about 5 mins drive to Totland /Freshwater offering an abundance of character pubs, restaurants, small supermarkets, local produce, bakers and butchers and array of small shops. Art gallery, photo shops, gift shops, florists. Yarmouth offers similar and is only 10 minutes away. Newport with it's larger array of clothes shops and the routine shops like Marks is 25/ 30 minute drive. There is also a cinema complex.
Tourist Attractions : Our most Local attraction is 5 minutes walk, The Needles Pleasure Park with its chairlift down to the Beach. Calbourne Water Mill is about a 15 minute drive, passing Chessell Pottery. There are also fishing trips and other interesting boat trips available in Yarmouth. Many tourist attractions are all within 40 minutes via coastal drive. Lovely Walks: No Car! From The Old Hayloft it is possible to walk one side of the Island over The Downs, above The Needles, to Freshwater via Tennyson monument. Or the other side of our coast, over the purple clad heather warren to Totland Bay. You can even venture all the way to Yarmouth if you like a longer few hours leisurely walk. The views are stunning on this long walk and I'd say the best to be had on the Island ?! You can always choose to catch the bus back from these walks, after a lovely meal in a local restaurant or pub !
