No phone service/read amenities carefully
First the positive. It has a lovely back yard, charming neighborhood and friendly neighbors. There have been some updates in the bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom. There’s was an effort to welcome guests with guidebooks, information booklet, books and movies. Ok, now the problems. First, there is only a bath tub with separate hot water and cold water spigots. The profile has bath and doesn’t mention shower so I missed this. My mistake. This didn’t work for our family. When my husband went to add more hot water to the tub he burnt his foot. The hot water comes out at practically boiling when it’s available. That’s the other thing, when the hot water runs out it takes an hour to get more. Plan accordingly. We were doing laundry, washing dishes and trying to bath 4 people and it ran out. The other big issue is phone service. We were notified a week before arriving that there was no cell service. However, there was a landline. No. It didn’t work. It just was static. I was to call with problems but had no phone service. My son was having breathing problems and I couldn’t contact anyone. I emailed. No response. I did get cell service if I climbed on top of the hill - that would have been nice to know. Finally, it said it had a barbeque- it didn’t. We planned barbeque meals the whole time so we were left trying to redo everything. The actual final issue was the amount of stuff that is standard at other vrbos we’ve stayed at and just was not there or we were required to do when we left- Ie no hand soap at the kitchen sink, no no wash cloths, no extra towels. When we left we were supposed to wash, dry, and put away all dishes, wipe down refrigerator, and strip beds. I would not stay here if you have asthma either. We came very close to having to take my son to the A&E.

We are Jonathan and Cate Dixon. We bought Gulliver's Cottage in 2010 and love every minute we spend there and hope you will too. We live nearby and are committed to helping you get the best from your stay and are always happy to give you ideas and advice for walks, places and eat and visit. All you need do is call or e-mail!

Why they chose this property

Shipton Gorge is a quiet, leafy Dorset village with a history going back to the Domesday Book in 1086. Built around the 13th century St Martin's Church, Shipton Gorge is well connected with a network of footpaths and bridleways to the coast at Hive Beach, stunning countryside, the South West Coastal Path, nearby ancient monuments and breathtaking hill-top views. You'll find a friendly welcome from villagers and the nearby New Inn, the village's own pub that serves great meals and Palmer's ales. We're about 10 minutes drive from Bridport which is a pretty, trendy but bustling market town. Bridport offers a superb range of independent and quirky shops, an amazing street market, a fantastic range of eating places and there is lots to see and do.

What makes this property unique

Our cottage, which dates back to the 1790's and situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has been converted to be easy, clean and airy but also to retain its quirky character and charm. Gulliver's Cottage is not just another holiday rental - it's our home from home, where we come to relax with friends and family and we hope that you'll feel the same way. We are within easy reach of a wealth of stunning Jurassic Coast beaches at Burton Bradstock, Lulworth and Durdle Dor, the Chesil Beach and Lyme Regis. Visit West Bay, used in the recent TV drama, Broadchurch. Local attractions include Maiden Castle, Hardy's Cottage in Dorchester, the Swannery at Abbotsbury and several historic homes and gardens.
