About Marion Hughes
Stephen and Marion also have a small farm with an olive grove in the nearby area of San Giorgio. Some 500 trees on about 25 acres that produces about 600 litres of olive oil which they sell to friends, family and colleagues in the UK.
Marion Hughes purchased this Villa in 2014
Why Marion Hughes chose Penne
Stephen grew up in Rome for part of his childhood (and speaks fluent Italian) and has strong memories of a mountain retreat the family rented in the Abruzzo mountains, not so far from Rome. Taking a sabbatical six years ago he went to the Abruzzo to re-kindle those childhood memories and fell in love with a hillside with stunning views of Penne, a delightful medieval town, and the surrounding mountains, with glimpses of the sea in the distance. Casa del Colle now sits on that hill.
What makes this Villa unique
Nestled between the sea and the Apennine mountains, Penne offers something for everyone. Sea and beaches are 40 minutes by car in one direction and mountains a similar distance in the other - but it is the beauty and seclusion of the mountains that stands out. Rising up sharply just behind the house to nearly 3000 metres is the Gran Saso, the highest peak in the Apennines. Glacier in parts with ski slopes for the Winter. In the summer you can visit the Campo Imperatore, 80 sq km of high plains used as the setting for more than 20 films including spaghetti westerns. In the middle of this plain sits a butchers that sells meat from the mountain herds, the speciality being arrosticini, small lamb kebab which can be barbecued there on one of the communal BBQs.

4 out of 5 only because of condition of the roads. The property was fantastic. The house was beautiful and functional. The pool made the vacation for our three teenagers.
So pleased you and your family enjoyed the pool and being at the villa. Really sorry about the road which was just beyond our control unfortunately. We've been assured it will be fixed by next year at the latest!
A perfect place for good friends and family
We stayed one week in Casa del Colle. 3 families with total 5 adults and 6 kids 5-10 years old. The house is big, clean and modern. What we enjoyed most was the location on the hill top. The view of the Italian cultural landscape was stunning! Even the thunderstorm was beautiful. The pool is clean and perfect, the kitchen is perfect, the bedrooms and bathrooms are perfect. Outside breakfast close to the kitchen. Questions to owner Steve were answered immediately, and he reserved dinner tables for us. And he helped us if we had questions about what to see or do. I hope we will come back again in some years! Thanks Marion and Steve.
We are so pleased you all had such a great time at the villa and enjoyed the landscape and views etc.
"A perfect place for good friends and family" is such a complement to us, as that's exactly what we have tried to achieve at the villa.
Hope you can return in the future.
A fabulous holiday home with the most stunning views!
I would thoroughly recommend this property as it pretty much has everything you would want. The house was spotless on arrival and the welcome hamper was very welcome given our time of arrival.
There is plenty of space both inside and out - we were a group of 4 adults and 4 kids and we never felt on top of each other. The pool and the views from the terrace are just stunning! The kitchen is very well equipped and made self catering very straight forward. The local pizzeria is excellent too however! The owners kept us well informed throughout the booking process and provided us with lots of information about the house and the surrounding area which we found very helpful. The location is perfect with being a relatively short drive up into the mountains and to the beach. We were a little worried about not having air conditioning but the relatively cool air at night and the fans in the rooms worked just perfectly for us. The bedding and towels were changed halfway through our 2 week holiday.
We most definitely hope to book this house again in the future and would recommend this to our family and friends.
Delighted to hear you had such a wonderful holiday at Casa del Colle and visiting the surrounding area. The views from the terrace and the pool are just stunning as you say but impossible to photograph as many guests have tried to! Thank you for being such excellent guests and you are most welcome back at any time in the future.
A Lovely Lovely Place
"Steve and Marion, the owners of Casa del Colle near Penne have done a great job building this villa. It is in a lovely quiet location on a hill over looking a valley with the local town of Penne which is a mile or two away. The villa is top quality, shiny granite floors throughout, v comfortable beds and a really good kitchen. The large pool and patio are excellent with shade if you need it (I do) and plenty of space and seats, loungers etc to chill out on. The views are spectacular with mountains and the sea in the distance and the Gran Sasso national park near by. We didn't get into it but it looks like there is great hill walking near by. I can thoroughly recommend this place and also some great restaurants near by, try Stefanos (great pizza and arrosticini) and Cignale (organic Montepulciano D'Abruzzo wine *****) and Mint sprigs in batter!!!......delicious! . We had a very good time and will definitely be going back." Peter S Coventry
Amazing holiday at Casa Del Colle!!
Amazing holiday at Casa del Colle; a beautiful, well-situated house with spectacular views! The interior was spacious, finished to a very high spec and spotless, with top quality bed linen on comfy beds. The large social/dining areas worked particularly well with a large group, ensuring many pleasant and relaxing winter evenings in front of the wood burner. Location is excellent for local restaurants (particularly good arrosticini), exploring the ancient town of Penne and walks around the lakes and mountains.
So pleased you had a wonderful holiday at Casa del Colle and you clearly enjoyed exploring the local area too. It is particularly nice to have plenty of space both inside the villa and outside when you visit as part of a large group.
An incredible 5* luxury villa
I'm not usually one for writing reviews but this house is truly stunning I just had to share our experience! Marion and Steve, the owners, have thought about every little detail. We were a large group and there was certainly enough space for everyone.
The bedrooms all have very comfortable beds with high quality white linen. We loved the fact that all the windows and doors have Mosquito screens you can pull across so there was no risk of being bitten at night! There was a lovely breeze and we all slept very well without the need to use the fans (which were in each bedroom). All the rooms were equipped with everything you could need - mirrors, chest of drawers, hair dryers etc. The main bathroom is incredible with a huge rainfall shower in a double height space. We felt like we were staying in a 5* luxury hotel with the huge fluffy white towels (extra towels were provided for the pool).
The living space suited us perfectly with a huge living, dining and kitchen area. There is another large reception room which we hardly used but I can imagine if you were coming during the cooler months you could enjoy another reception space and both areas had fires for the winter (not that we got to try them out in August!). The kitchen had everything you could need and more. It is clear the owners enjoy cooking! So often villas are not equipped to actually cook in but we had great enjoyment using this kitchen - sharp knives, a large caffatiere, loads of good quality pots and pans and even a microwave for those who are less keen on cooking! We enjoyed some amazing meals out during our stay but equally enjoyed cooking in the villa and sitting on the large terrace with the most spectacular panoramic view.
There was everything you could need for young children including two stokke high chairs, cot, travel cot, and even a pushchair, if you haven't brought your own. There were toys for the children to play with in the pool and we bought some extra ones in the local supermarket which were a great hit. There was a good selection of board games and DVDs for some evening entertainment. The games room in the basement was a very popular evening location with many a game of pool and table football being had!
The pool area was great with a large structure which provided shade throughout the day. There were loads of (really comfy) sun-loungers and reclining chairs around the pool - my husband took quite fancy to the rocking sun lounger and it was hard to get him out of it! I par
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted you had such a great time at Casa del Colle enjoying the pool, local restaurants and cooking at the villa! Sitting or eating on the terrace with a glass of wine and the views is so amazing.
40 minutes drive to the Adriatic coast. Ample beaches but visiting the nearby lakes is also very beautiful.
40 minute drive to Pescara Airport. Alternatively, Rome and Ancona Airports are two and half hours away by car. You will need to hire a car and I would be more than happy to advise on which suppliers to use dependant on which airport you fly to.

We have written a handbook detailing good local restaurants, cafes, bars, markets (when, where, etc), supermarkets (if you miss the markets!), walking trips, driving trips, cycling trips and more. Trip Advisor is also a wonderful way of discovering the immediate area and seeing highlights but there is no substitute for discovering the places yourself.
