About Sharla Cameron
My husband grew up on Port Hood Island and I am from Saskatchewan. I absolutely fell in love with the island the first time I saw it. The feeling you get when you are there is so unique you have to experience it for yourself. We live in the Annapolis Valley and are business owners involved in seafood export and a seafood restaurant. We love any time we are able to escape to the serenity and peace of the island.
Why Sharla Cameron chose Port Hood
In 2004 when the community of Port Hood Island put the schoolhouse up for sale, we couldn't resist. My husband grew up on the island and attended the school with all of his cousins. His Mother and Grandmother both taught at the school. His father and most of his relatives were fishermen. Many fond memories of childhood are held on the island and it is truly a special place. We hope you will enjoy how we have transformed the schoolhouse while keeping the original purpose of the building in mind.

Little piece of Heaven
From the moment we met Captain Dave until he again taxied us off the island we we were amazed at the peace and quiet ... just had to close your eyes and all you could hear was birds and waves :) will be going back for longer next summer :)
Beyond Beautiful and Peaceful!!!!
We cant wait to go back next summer. The accommodations were perfect. Well equipped kitchen, really comfortable beds and very clean. Lovely deck with a stunning view of the ocean and beach. Really enjoyed riding the bikes.
School House Charm
My husband I and stayed on Port Hood Island for 4 beautiful days. We really enjoyed the community, the atmosphere, and the quietness and the beauty of the island. It was a perfect vacation for us. We swam every day, took walks, met neighbors, and had a peaceful relaxing time.
The school house is a unique stay. It is really a home, not a place fixed up just to rent. It feels like staying at a friend's house. It has a lot of history in the community and has a lived in feel. Our hosts were very communicative and helped us with any questions or problems that arose.
The island is a self contained island off the mainland. You need to bring in your own groceries, and best to stay there the entire time although limited back and forth is possible. I would highly recommend it for people who want to get away from urban life and spend a quiet peaceful vacation. If you are interested in going out, hearing music, eating at restaurants etc, I would suggest staying on the mainland.
We had a wonderful time and hope some day to return.
Gorgeous Island and Home - but had a few plumbing issues
We spent 5 amazing days here. Every day my husband ran on the road, and our family of 5 played and swam on the nearby beach. Because there are so few cars we felt safe letting the kids roam around freely. We did a lot of cooking and baking and thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful island. The house is spacious and thoughtfully fixed up with special touches like the kitchen island is the original teacher's desk with a stone surface. While we were there we encountered a number of plumbing issues: the hot water in the smaller bathroom shower didn't work, the sink in the larger bathroom drained slowly, the dishwasher leaked (we kept towels on the kitchen floor to dry up the leak). We did not try the washing machine in the basement because it looked very old.
A perfect place for peace and relaxation
A view from every window! The Schoolhouse and island are both so beautiful. So peaceful and serene. Relaxing trails and beaches to explore with not another person on them. This is a very special place. A place like no other!
This charming schoolhouse has been beautifully restored to a spacious and bright home. The island is quiet with many beaches, good swimming and miles of walking trails.
