Why Jenny Rutherford chose Caunes-Minervois
We fell in love with Villa Nova and the amazing location the moment we walked up the front steps, turned and looked across the terrace at the view beyond. At the time, we didn't know anything about the house or selling price as the owners were away, and it was only by word of mouth that we heard about it before it was listed with the agent. We had been looking for a property for approx. 12 months and had viewed many and varied houses across the Languedoc region. Villa Nova had everything we were looking for and more. Luckily it didn't need any major work, just a few minor upgrades such as new windows and shutters in the living areas, and the new security pool cover to comply with local regulations. Since buying the house in 2014 we have enjoyed some very happy times there with family and friends. 2018 - ground floor bathroom completely renovated to replace bath, basin, shower and install a toilet, and also installing an ensuite shower room in the 4th bedroom (on 1st floor) including a shower, wash basin and toilet.

Caunes Minervois holiday
Beautiful location and very good accommodation - plenty of bathrooms etc. Generally very cluttered and the kitchen was very disorganised but we found most things we needed. It would have been nice to have air conditioning at least in the upstairs bedrooms as it was very hot. In contrast, the pool was extremely cold! Towels were in short supply - one each for baths and the pool for two weeks was barely adequate but the washing machine worked well.
The location more than compensated for any shortcomings.
Hi Judith, Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review. We are glad you enjoyed the location. Unfortunately previous guests do put kitchen items away in strange places and our caretaker doesn't have time during changeovers to re-organise all the cupboards.
We supply a bath towel and a pool towel for each guest, but would be happy to provide more if asked. Many holiday rentals do not provide pool towels.
Thanks again for choosing to stay at Villa Nova.
Kind regards, Jenny
A large, well equipped villa with a pool in a beautiful setting.
My family (10 of us, 3 generations, over 2 weeks) had a wonderful holiday at the Villa Nova. The house is spacious and comfortable, furnished with an interesting mix of up to date equipment as well as lovely traditional French rustic furniture. We all loved spending time in and around the big saline pool, especially the first week when the weather was so hot (40 degrees!). Set on a hillside above the village of Caunes Minervois, there are wonderful views over the village and towards the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. The village is interesting with a medieval Abbey, famous historic marble quarries and local shops and restaurants. We also enjoyed discovering the area, including Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi, Minerve, the market at Olonzac, the castles at Lastours, the caves at Cabréspine and the lake at Cavayère. There are also many opportunities to taste the local Minervois wines as vineyards extend in all directions from the village. The house provided us with an excellent base and an ideal setting to celebrate a special family birthday and we would like to thank Jenny for making it available for us to enjoy.
Shhh - don't tell anyone about this gem...
Our second stay and we'd go again in a heartbeat. Friendly village close to Carcassonne, wonderful home from home with well equipped kitchen and bathrooms, a fantastic pool and staggering views. Rewarding well marked walks from the gorge at Notre Dame du Cros. This place is special.
A lovely property with a great pool and plenty of space
A lovely property with a great pool and plenty of space. This is a fantastic place to spend time relaxing and enjoying the fabulous south-west climate. Great wines too! Attractions in the surrounding area are little limiting for children but the accomodation itself is well equipped for entertaining the little ones.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We're really pleased you enjoyed your stay in Caunes and the wonderful surroundings and climate of the area.
Hope to see you again.
Just a little tired
The villa was as advertised but sadly was all a little tired. Settees in the sitting room sagged, armchairs in the terrace area had cushions on hardboard, loungers had only two positions - semi upright or flat, bathrooms were very small and quite dated, the best was our bedroom - good bed and a good size, oh and the fridge - excellent
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, your comments are appreciated. We are pleased that you did enjoy your holiday as mentioned in your email.
Fantastic family holiday
We spent a week in Caunes this summer and had an absolutely wonderful time. The villa was wonderful, the pictures didn't really do it justice.
We did have one day trip, to Carcassonne, but apart from that didn't feel the need to go anywhere, we were all so happy lazing around the pool.
We did eat out a few times in the village and we also regularly walked down to the patisserie in the morning to buy breakfast.
I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing, quiet break in a beautiful part of the world.
Thanks for your lovely review. We're glad you enjoyed your holiday in Caunes. It is definitely a relaxing and peaceful place.
Special interest holidays:
Caunes is situated in the very productive wine region of the Minervois, with many wine cellars and domains nearby where you can sample the local produce. The area is also known as Cathar country and is steeped in history with many sites worth a visit for keen historians, such as Lastours, Carcassonne and Peyrepertuse.
For nature-lovers or those seeking an active holiday, the area offers opportunities for bird-watching, hiking, cycling, climbing, tennis, golf, skiing.
A few kilometres from Caunes, Ammonite Pottery holds pottery lessons where you can learn to throw pots on a wheel, ideal for both children and adults.
A lake at Carcassonne has many family activities during summer. The sandy beaches of the Med can be reached in less than an hour, and provide a variety of amenities and activities.
Carcassonne airport (served by Ryanair with reasonably-priced fares from many UK cities) is 20 minutes from the villa.
Other airports within reach are Beziers (1hr), Toulouse (1hr15mins), Perpignan (1hr30mins). Car hire is available at these airports.
Although not essential, a car is recommended to make the most of the activities and sight-seeing in the area.
Caunes is approximately 10 hours drive from Calais, mainly on the superb toll ways.
Carcassonne and its fortified old town La Cite, a World Heritage site, are only 20 minutes drive. The canal du midi, another world heritage site, is also within easy reach and offers boat trips or walking and cycling along its banks.
Narbonne, 40 mins, is a charming town on the canal, while the city of Toulouse (1 hr 15 mins) offers a wider choice for culture lovers. The Spanish border is approximately 2 hours and Barcelona 3 hours.
The local shops in Caunes sell a variety of lovely local fresh produce and general goods and can all be reached on foot, but for a wider selection there is a large supermarket within 10 mins drive.
Caunes is famous for its pink marble, which is still quarried today, and marble sculptures can be found dotted around the village. A marble sculpting competition is held in June every year.
The village holds a small market on Thursdays, while larger markets can be found at nearby towns, notably Olonzac on Tuesday mornings.
The 12th century Abbey in Caunes can be seen from the villa, and is spectacular at night when lit. The Abbey hosts a number of music events throughout summer.
The area is known as Cathar country, with the ruins of several Cathar castles in driving distance.
