Easy to get to, hard to leave in the heart of everything...
About John Wennes
I am a true chameleon and I can get along anywhere with anyone. I grew up on a small ranch in Texas and have an appreciation for the simple things in life. Moved to Europe in my early twenties and lived for three years seeing parts of the world I never imagined. My travel experiences have helped me understand what is and what is not important when you travel. Chose location and comfort first followed by style and atmosphere second. I like places that are in the heart of it all but the option to relax and reflect after a long day of sightseeing.
John Wennes purchased this House in 2014

Cozy, well-appointed, modern beach house.
My family and I get together every Christmas holiday, and this was our first time in San Diego. We were a party of 4 adults and 2 small children, and fit comfortably in this cozy space for the week we stayed.
John was super responsive from the get go. When I first inquired about staying here, we went back and forth several times to make sure that the space was suitable for our needs, given the size of our party and the 2 small children.
Once we arrived at the beach house, we were blown away by how thoughtfully furnished and well-appointed the house was. It is clear the house was recently renovated, and there are so many small touches that made for a wonderful stay. The kitchen was fabulous for cooking (which we did every day), and had every pot/pan/appliance/utensil you could need. John also left us spices and coffee we could use, which was very much appreciated. The bathrooms are gorgeous, and the patio was very relaxing after a long day of outings. It was great that there was a washer and dryer in the garage too, with detergent for us to do laundry several times.
The location of the house can't be beat - it is a 5 minute drive to Ocean Beach and a couple of parks. 10 to 15 minute drive to Mission Beach, Point Loma, and Balboa Park.
Full disclosure: I deducted one star because we were John's first winter renters at this beach house, and he left us an old space heater which blew the power out every night we tried to use it (the first 3 or 4 nights). It was a bit of a bummer, because we couldn't use more than one major appliance at a time, and the power blew out every night before we figured out it was the old space heater causing the problem. However, John was SUPER responsive to our numerous calls and texts every night, and had an electrician come out to us early mid-week when the problem keep happening. Once the electrician diagnosed theissue (and we got a new, lower wattage space heater) and replaced the main breaker switch, we didn't have any more problems.
In summary, though John hasn't been renting this property very long and doesn't have many reviews, you should feel comfortable renting out this space. It is absolutely beautiful and has everything you may need, the location is great, and if you happen to have any problems, John's responsiveness and attitude can't be beat. We loved the week we spent in this house, and if/when we come back to San Diego, we would love to stay here again. Thanks John!
This is a great beach house. Nicely designed and newly redone - nice kitchen with new appliances. Two parking places off the street is always appreciated in any beach community. It was an easy walk to the beach or to downtown Ocean Beach. We would stay here again if available.
Awesome place to stay in the center of everything in OB!!
This house is a gem! It's so close to everything you want in OB. Walking distance to the beach and all the shops and sights. Close to the freeway as well. The house is a cute craftsman 3 bedroom/2bath bungalow with exceptional amenities including a garage to store your gear in and an extra fridge. The kitchen is well stocked and has upgraded appliances. It is a cooks dream! The courtyard is just perfect with the shade and fountain and there is an area for pets as well as a nice grill. There are beach towels in the garage for use at the beach and a washer/dryer in the garage.
The owner went out of his way to be accommodating and helpful and he is so nice and resourceful too. We needed help with getting a mount on our surfboard for our GoPro and he called and arranged with a local shop for us to bring our surfboard to them and they got it done. Truly a great guy to go out of his way for us.
We would definitely recommend this property to all types of travelers including families or a girls/guys getaway. We loved that it was so close to the beach and we went there often. We will definitely be back to stay again!
Perfect Bungalow near Ocean Beach
We had the pleasure of recently renting John's perfect bungalow for five days in July 2016. The two teenage girls with us instantly fell in love with the place when we walked in (so did I). The girls took over the 3rd bedroom in the front of the house and spent a ton of time riding the two purple cruiser bikes around the neighborhood and to the beach. It was a nice touch to have the en suite bathroom in the master bedroom and a second bathroom for the girls.
I have rented other VRBO homes and I have to say this rental possessed the most charm and modern wonderful touches. The kitchen included everything you could ask for with matching ikea white dishes/cups, new pots and pans, and all of the extras. We loved being able to open up the french doors into the courtyard from the master bedroom.
The house is newly remodeled, clean with nice touches throughout. The courtyard/patio is a great place to hang out with the Buddha water fountain, the sun shade and the patio lights.
We also loved being close to Ocean Beach. You can walk around the corner to a well stocked liquor store (groceries/sundries) or ride the cruiser bikes over to the Organic Food Co-op on Voltaire Street. We also walked/rode to the busy area of Ocean Beach where there a lot of restaurants such as the famous Hodads, OB Warehouse and funky little shops. We also took Uber over to Harbor/Shelter Islands to eat at restaurants with the best views of the City skyline. Mission Beach area is a short drive away. If you do rent a car you will appreciate the rare parking spot on the side of the home.
John is a pleasure to work with and responds quickly to any question and keeps you updated throughout the process.
I recommend a stay at this property especially for a small family or if you have teenagers- you won't find a more charming place!
