About Marcus Matzke
My husband and I are originally from Minnesota and decided in 2007 to be adventurous and move to another state. We had visited the Outer Banks on our honeymoon, but it was tough to find housing and jobs on the Banks. Someone mentioned the Wilmington area, specifically Carolina Beach. We'd never even heard of it, but decided to visit and see what Pleasure Island was all about. We fell in love with the place the minute we drove over the bridge - you immediately felt like you were on vacation. A few years later, we were fortunate enough to buy our first place at the beach, and we decided we wanted to create a business where people can come to enjoy our wonderful beach and spend sometime reconnecting as a family. Six years later, we own six rental homes that we run ourselves and enjoy having people join us year after year to spend and admire beautiful Carolina Beach.
Marcus Matzke purchased this Condo in 2015
Why Marcus Matzke chose Carolina Beach
We are very particular about the properties that we have purchased. Since we moved to Carolina Beach, we have always lived on the North End and really enjoyed how quiet and low traffic the area is compared to other places on the island. It is a mile from the boardwalk, but it is also away from all the rowdy hotels and bars as well. You can come home and know you will get a good night's sleep. Many of our neighbors live on the island year-round so it really feels like home away from home. Also we liked how close we lived to this property, so we can be at the service of our customers, if the need should arise.
What makes this Condo unique
This unit is the ultimate Oceanfront Dream. When we purchased the first floor unit in 2012 (which was our original Dreams Come True buy), this upstairs unit was vacant. It needed a lot of work, even though it was built in 2004. Knowing the huge potential, we figured we'd never get the chance to own it. But we started saving our dollars and continued to dream anyway. Fast forward to 2015, after endless calls with banks and realtors, we put in an offer and it was accepted! We immediately set to work, and this unloved unit has been restored to it's original glory. It still doesn't seem real! Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined owning such a lovely and large home on the ocean. This unit along with the downstairs is so special - the enormous oceanfront balconies, the backyard for BBQs and playing yard games, the updated interior, and two masters on the ocean-side, were all things we had hoped for in our dream house. And here we are, excited to share it for your family and friends. We hope you love and enjoy our home as much as we do. Our wish is that it provides you and your guests with a fantastic beach experience and that important time spent together relaxing.

Great house on a wonderful beach
House is spacious, well-appointed and comfortable. Can't beat walking straight onto the beach. Kitchen and living room are really great for entertaining. Loved all the amenities.
Perfect family getaway
We loved this house for our HUGE family. Enough beds, dishes, space for everyone; right on the beach; tons of stuff to do around the area. The owners were there when we checked in and made sure everything was up to par. Would definitely stay here again.
Another wonderful family vacation in Carolina Beach
What a great location on The beach! We haven’t been that far North on the beach before and found it to be a bit quieter but frankly, any location is perfect on Carolina beach❤️ Just a few observations.... I absolutely understand how hard the beach climate can be on a property! I would just say that the beachfront decks could use some work, but having said that, it didn’t affect our enjoyment of them! A couple of chairs in the living room of the upstairs unit could use repair or replacement, as one of them doesn’t have sufficient cushions in the seat... it sinks quite low when you sit down, and for most people, not a problem, but for anyone physically challenged, it could present a challenge. The other chair is really off balance, albeit comfortable. In the lower unit, it was great... very quiet and nicely appointed. The beachfront master was beautiful and very comfortable! My only suggestion there would be the master bath in that room. I didn’t feel it had been cleaned well enough and initially, I thought the tub was very dirty but it was actually just some staining of the tub. I will say that there was a fair amount of sand left in the tub. We had a large group of people, 26 at one point, and occupied the entire house. Our youngest was 14 months old and a pack n play and booster seat or high chair would have been great! I would also mention that ahead of our visit, there was a very negative review concerning cleanliness and bugs. I have already addressed the only issue I saw with cleanliness. As far as bugs, specifically cockroaches, we saw a few... mostly at night on the decks. However, it’s a beach environment, with high humidity and so this is not a surprise or unexpected. We did not find the situation to be what was previously described. We saw Marcus a couple of times throughout our week, and really appreciated him checking up on us! All of the above comments are observations, not criticisms,.... we had a wonderful week with our family in this house!! I would stay again!!
Filthy and filled with cockroaches
The title says it all. We spent the first 10 hours cleaning to make it bearable, because we had a lot invested and wanted a nice family vacation. We were going to tough it out. But when the cockroaches came out, we packed up and checked in at a hotel at 1:30 am. Three families. Also this is a beachfront property but the beach access bridge was lost in the hurricane in 2018. We were told, in January, that it would be replaced by our stay in June 2019, but it wasn’t.
Hello Debra - We are terribly disappointed that things turned out the way that they did for your and your family. Your experience was vastly different than those who stayed before and after your reservation. Additionally, we were never afforded an opportunity to assist with your concerns before you vacated the property.
With the humid beach climate, bugs are a part of this environment. We are on a monthly pest control program, and although that works to help control the critters, it will never eliminate them. Simply leaving a sliding glass door open for a few minutes at night can attract many bugs. Subsequent guests have not reported any bug issues.
As we had discussed, the walkway was completed that week of your stay. We did not wish for it to take as long as it did, but we tried to be workable with our contractor as he was trying feverishly to get folks back into their homes who were still displaced from the hurricane. Although not ideal, the public beach access is within 100' of the property.
I know we cannot go back and hit restart on this, but I am sending you a letter hoping that we can earn your business back again. As a premier VRBO partner, our properties and customer experiences have been far superior to what transpired here.
The property's owner was one of the nicest gentlemen I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. This property is a Gem! Peaceful & Comfortable. Beautiful views. We also experienced the ocean with a full moon. Great beach combing !
Marcus and Emily are amazing people and made our family vacation the most enjoyable we have ever had
The home was very nice and the location was amazing. We even forgot some cloths at the house and Marcus drove into Wilmington to meet me and returned them. They are truly people of integrity. I would recommend renting this beautiful house.
Carolina Beach has so much going on for everyone!
If you love to fish, there is surf and pier fishing, you can charter boats to take you on the river, intracoastal, or deep-sea fishing in the ocean.
If you love the outdoors, Carolina Beach State Park has great hiking trails, as does the Fort Fisher Recreation Area. There is a bike trail from Carolina Beach to the Southport Ferry, or you can travel up River Road to enjoy the scenic views of the river. You can also drop a kayak in at the State Park or just a few blocks away on Canal Dr.

For those with a love of art, Cameron Art Museum offers displays of modern and historic art from the local area and abroad. Exhibitions change regularly.
We know coming to the beach takes a lot of effort, especially when you have lots of folks in your group. It doesn't always make it easy to bring items you wish you had room for. Wheels of Fun provides rentals to those looking for multi-person bikes, surfboards or other beach equipment. Pleasure Island Rentals also rents jetskis, kayaks, and paddleboards.
