Palomares is a small Andalusian coastal town/big village with its focus being its main square and town hall cultural centre which is open to residents and non-residents alike. Spanish classes are held here, as are a variety of events. Around the square are a number of bars, restaurants and tapas bars which remain ever popular and lively all year, especially on market day (Wednesdays) and during fiestas and local festivals.
The village shops include bakers, butchers, a fishmonger, mini-markets, beauty salons, banks etc. From Palomares you can visit other areas such as Mojacar, Garrucha, Villaricos, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora with relative ease. A local bus route connects many of the local towns and there are major motorways leading to Murcia (San Javier) airport and Almeria and Alicante airports.
The village is typically Spanish with the majority of homes in the centre being Spanish-owned. This, coupled with the fact that there are a number of other nationalities living here permanently ensures a stable population and makes it a charming place to visit throughout the year. The best months for sunny weather are from April to October and the Winter months can be surprisingly warm and sunny too.
The local beach with a beach bar in the summer is well-maintained and a favorite with fishermen. Other activities in the area include tapas routes, boat trips, hiking, cycling, horse riding, diving, other water sports, golf etc. The renowned Desert Springs Golf Resort is only a few minutes from Palomares and Granada with its Alhambra Palace and Sierra Nevada ski slopes is about a two and a half hour drive away.
