Why Kris & Jim chose Little Switzerland
We fell in love with the beauty of the area, and this property really captures the essence of Little Switzerland. The setting is a dramatic overlook of the Catawba Valley and the surrounding mountain range. In a quiet residential neighborhood, this house offers a peaceful place to unwind and really get away from it all.
What makes this Chalet unique
This house is decorated in the theme of Fox and Hen. You will find fox and hen decor on every floor, if not in every room.

An Ultimate Stress Relief
If you want maximum stress relief, this wonderful Bavarian style A-frame with long-range mountain views is the place. Owners Kris and Jim have done a great job of rebuilding the huge deck with Trex complete with a hot tub for awesome star gazing. And if the weather isn't good, the basement game room will keep you entertained. Are you a hummingbird fan like we are? They have several feeders off the deck. Replace the food upon arrival to ensure a fresh feast for these little birds and a dozen hummers will provide additional entertainment (in season only of course).
Do be prepared for a challenge to get in and out of the property, however. The house is tucked away on the side of a mountain reached only via a tight gravel road with poor visibility at hwy 226. The little neighborhood needs a safety mirror across the road to see traffic coming from the left as you exit. But fortunately speeds are slow - 35mph at best. If you're into grilling like we are, you'll be disappointed. There's no gas grill. It only has a charcoal smoker. Doubt anyone actually uses it. So, plan to eat out a lot. Also, you may get a surprise visit from the landscapers who show up unexpectedly to trim, cut and blow the yard, but they're friendly. Finally, the master bedroom has interesting decor that may not be for everyone. It's boudoir red...not exactly 5 star hotel but with the 5 star view, you probably won't care.
Thanks Richard! We are glad your stay was a good one. Your review serves as a great reminder that one must look carefully before pulling out onto the main road from our neighborhood’s gravel driveway. It is extremely important not to make a left out of our driveway onto the main road because it can cause damage to the swale (which prevents water from washing out our road) and the turn is too short and unsafe to make in one maneuver.
Just a clarification about the grill. The charcoal grill is indeed first and foremost a grill, and not a smoker. It is designed to be able to smoke foods as well. It was purchased new this season and in fact has gotten much use from most of our guests. The charcoal grill was an intentional decision; we are not big fans of gas due to the propane flavor it imparts. Since we are not there to to monitor gas supply, running out of gas in our absence is a real concern.
Lastly, I got a big kick out of your comment about the “boudoir” ! Would you believe that the room was even more red when we purchased the house? There too we made a conscious decision to leave it mostly as we found it with a few minor upgrade extras. Neighborhood lore has it that a prior owner of the house was a well known princess from the Middle East. While I do not know for sure whether she decorated that room, I like to believe she did. The wallpaper is original. I did paint one wall white but when it came time to replace the carpets I opted to keep them red, in the spirit of the previous owner.
To us these eccentricities add to the flavor and character of the house. Many of the touches such as the stain-glass windows and funky light fixtures may seem outdated to some, but are original to the house. In updating the house, we have been careful not to erase it’s history and character altogether. It is a very unique place with many quirks, built into the side of a mountain and hopefully people that see the pictures understand and desire this before booking. It is definitely not a five-star hotel as is the case with most all VRBO rentals. Indeed it is a home, our home, which we love and cherish. We enjoy sharing this special place with our guests with the hope that they will appreciate and love it as much as we do!
Just as advertised!
