A beautiful week!
We stayed at the house, as a family of 3, with our friends (a family of 4). The house is fantastic - lots of space for the children to explore & very well equipped. We particularly liked how well kitted out the kitchen was - plenty of crockery, cutlery & cooking pots/utensils. The bedrooms are all good sizes, & the bathrooms are lovely - I enjoyed trying out the bath looking up at the stars through the window above! The pool is saltwater which meant that no one ended up with dry skin or smelling of chemicals. It was a very hot week in August so the pool was brilliant for keeping us all cool, and we could sit in the shade using the available umbrellas. The outside space is great, as are the views of the surrounding countryside. It felt spacious but private. We enjoyed some good outings using the information at the house, but did find that it was a decent round trip (30mins+) to buy morning croissants/bread. Mia, the key holder, was very helpful - she popped in every couple of days to check on the water filter for the pool, internet connection (which was playing up when we arrived) but was never invasive. She happily answered all our questions.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would happily come back again!
And we loved having you to stay...Do come back!
Stunning French farmhouse holiday experience
What a treat to arrive at such a wonderful property, full of character, lovely furnishings throughout. Lots of books to keep you occupied during your stay whatever language you speak! Pool area was wonderful, plenty of relaxing chairs as well as the garden space to play badminton etc.
We loved the kitchen, full of lovely pots and crockery to use and the choice of eating inside or under the shady spot.
There was so much space in the property and surrounding area.
The only criticism I would have is the lane to the house does need some work as it is quite a bumpy drive.
Thank you so much for your visit to Les Rousseaux.
We would be very happy to welcome you again any time!
A relaxing holiday
In may 2013 we spent two weeks in the beautiful house „Les Rousseaux“. A quiet place in the middle of a wunderful nature! With us Lynn, our dog (Golden Retriever). She adored to be in the big garden totaly fenced. Our next nabours were some interessted cows! They walked with us on the other side of the fence. The house is a wunderful place to stay with a dog, because you can walk from the house, or find if you drive a few minutes by car, other nice places for excursions. The house is very sympathetic and practical and we felt very comfortable in the rooms. We are happy to come again in may 2014 and hope sunshine will be this time with us! During our holidays, we were accompaned from the charmig Mia! All the time ready to help us! Edi & Silvia, Switzerland
A perfect holiday
We stayed here in the last week of July, in perfect weather. The house is beautiful, with grand but welcoming lower rooms (including a very aristocratic staircase and a fully equipped modern farmhouse kitchen, with an island, and enormous dining space attached). The bedrooms are generous and remain cool during the nights, which enabled us to sleep! The whole house is decorated with great taste and style, with beautiful furniture and comfortable seats and sofas, and a really spectacular contemporary bathroom, elegantly integrated into the timbers of the old house. The pool terrace overlooks deep woodland and fields, and is secluded and private. We saw a cowherd passing far off--and that was all. There is enchanting wildlife in the area--deer, butterflies, buzzards, woodpeckers, frogs--and herds of gentle Charentais cattle. There is a covered space between the outside barns for eating outside and plenty of room for a barbecue. We have been to many French farmhouses for a holiday but this was the best, and we immediately booked to go again next year. The charming town of Cluny is quite close with an excellent supermarket (Atak) and a slightly less excellent one (Intermarche) as well as some great restaurants and bars. But you don't need these. The charms of Les Rousseaux far outweigh them.
Stunning property in a gorgeous rural location
The photos certainly do not do this property justice. It is very tastefully decorated, has enough space not to feel overcrowded and the kitchen really does have everything you need. The surrounding countryside is stunning and taking a swim whilst the friendly neighbouring Charolais cattle watch with interest is an experience not to be missed!
Should you feel like you wish to venture out there are lots of places within a reasonable drive to visit, although it is very tempting just to stay put and enjoy the peace and quiet of the place!!
All in all we had one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had and would highly recommend it.
Thank you very much for your kind words.
Hope to see you again at Les Rousseaux!
We absolutely adored our stay in this wonderful house. It is immaculately restored, extremely well-equipped and very tastefully decorated, and every detail has been considered to make one's stay as comfortable as possible. The setting is an exquisitely bucolic landscape dotted with friendly white Charolais cows, who come to the fence to watch while you're relaxing around the discreet and lovely pool. It is literally buried in the countryside so a car is essential and nearest provisions only available in Cluny, but this is not a hardship as the drive is so beautiful and Cluny is a lively, historic and interesting town in which to spend time. All around the area are lovely Romanesque churches, some great local restaurants, picturesque chateaux to visit -- and there are endless walks to be taken through the open rolling farmland. A feast for painters as well. We had perfect weather but even in cooler times, this house would be very comfortable as it is well-heated throughout. The owners are delightful and made every effort to ensure we were welcome and happy there.
I would recommend this property to anyone in search of peace and quiet and beauty for their holiday, and who does not require lots of conveniences and entertainment close at hand (though I understand many activities are available in the region for children etc.) -- I would also perhaps not recommend it for very small children nor very elderly persons who might have trouble with stairs. Though there are sleeping options and bathroom facilities downstairs, all the bedrooms are up a majestic stone staircase, the centerpiece of the house.
This 19th century farmhouse and barn has been artfully transformed into a spacious house with a pool, enjoying perfect exposure and lovely views across the valley of woods, hedgerows and pastures dotted with white Charolais cows. You will enjoy discovering the chateaux and castles of Southern Burgundy, wine tasting in the vineyards from the Cote d'Or to the Beaujolais, buying local cheeses in the farmers' markets in Cluny and surrounding towns, browsing through the weekly antiques fairs or visiting Romanesque chapels and the churches of Tournus and Paray le Monial. Have fun bike riding, horse riding, fishing or playing tennis or golf in this sunny part of Burgundy. Bird-watchers will love our nature trails and France's largest ornithological park in nearby Les Dombes. The Taizé Community is a 20 minute drive away. Gourmets and gourmands can make trips to Beaune, Dijon, Lyon, Roanne, Vonnas and Chagny to experience the cuisine of some of France's greatest chefs.
Other Activities: Taize and Paray le Monial 1/2 hour drive. 2 golf courses 45 mins away
