About Francis Boulbès
Profesor and school doctor retired , travelers "adventurers" having run for a long time the world, a little calmed seen our age... I write (four novels) I realize amateur movies (several awards in international festivals of amateur movies)... in brief I take care.
Francis Boulbès purchased this House in 2018
Why Francis Boulbès chose Almería
We like this region, especially the life of this district and the hinterland which looks like strangely in Morocco : in Moroccan Rif for the massif of Alpujarras, in the Moroccan South (steppes of alfa) for the massif of Filabres. Granada, Málaga, Lorca are not far. Very close by also, the most beautiful rocky coast of Spain: Cabo de Gata. In Almería, everything (restaurants, services, stores ...) is cheaper than in all other big cities of Spain.
What makes this House unique
Almería is doubtless the least expensive big city of Spain. It is not more one of tourist big cities of Andalusia, as Seville, Granada, Córdoba... The Almería key point, and of this central district in particular, is the authenticity. The street looks like all the streets of the Andalusian villages, while being in city center. Often an air of flamenco leaks out through venetian blinds. Of the terrace, we have an exceptional view on the Arabic castle, the Alcazaba. In winter, the Almería city stands out on Alpujarras covered with snow...

The house was in a great location 10 min walk to the main city. 20 mins to airport. Everything you need for your stay is at the house. Excellent wifi. Very comfortable double bed. Ideal house for 2 to 3 people. Small patio off main bedroom was a bonus with a good little BBQ that we used twice. Highly recommend this house.
A lovely authentic place to stay
We had a great time staying at this property. It is in a little street with an amazing view of the Alcazaba. The daily market nearby is very useful and we got some beautiful local foods. It is a short walk to the great restaurants and bars. Maria was very helpful and friendly and was at the house to greet us. If you want to stay in a place that is not too touristy and authentic, this is it!
Thank you very much. I’m glad you enjoyed the house and the neighborhood. You were perfect, the house at your departure was as clean as when you arrived !! :) :)
Perfect location to explore the city and region
The house was perfect for us. Maria was waiting for us at the house when we arrived, so we had a whistle stop tour of everything, which made settling in so much easier. She and her husband also walked us down to a neighbourhood fish tapas bar at 10pm as we'd arrived starving. It was a very good choice and incredible value.
The bed is so comfortable that my partner, who usually can only sleep till 6ish, slept till gone 9 every day. This meant that our day started often too close to siesta time (museums and shops tend to close at 1:30 or 2:30 and don't reopen till 5) to do anything but lunch and walk.
The house is well stocked, plenty of kitchen equipment, crockery and cutlery for keen cooks and a little BBQ on the terrace outside the main bedroom. There is also shampoo, conditioner and shower stuff as this is their second home.
There is a local market that is only 5 minutes walk away that opens till 2pm 6 days a week. It sells fruit, veg, meat and fish and you can get 2 huge churros and 2 coffees for only 4Euro. The better churreria at the corner of San Juan will have run out of churros by 11:30am but the market ones are fine. The small local shop has fresh, warm bread twice a day and a reasonable range of essentials. There is a Dia supermarket if you go out of the house, turn left and head down till you can see the sea - less than 10 mins.
The Alcazabar helps keep you from getting lost as you wander around town and its FREE! So you can wander up and chill out with the views whenever you feel like it. The main entrance isn't well signed though. You can get up to the wall from a path by the house, but then need to come back down to get in - the entrance is by the Almedina restaurant, which has great food and hosts occasional flamenco and other nights. Not like tourist shows; proper flamenco. There is also a flamenco club in La Chanca that tends to open once a week in the barrio.
We foolishly came without our phrase book and didn't meet many people who spoke English anywhere, but that meant a fun food week of point and guess! Most of the fish will either be dipped in seasoned flour and fried or cooked on la plancha (grill plate) and is both incredibly tasty and inexpensive, especially for the high quality. The first tapa with your beer or wine is free, so as much as I love cooking, I only cooked once while we were there as it was so cheap to eat out.
If you want to experience the area as a local - stay here!
Thank you so much. I am in Almeria now and Maria told me all the good things she thought of you :) I hope the pleasure of seeing you again, in France or in Almeria.
Enjoyable stay at this property.
We enjoyed our stay in this property. The description given was accurate so no surprises there. The owner was very efficient at replying to requests and enquiries and was very helpful. Thanks Francis for your courtesy and especially for allowing us to stay later on our final day as we had a late flight home.
We would recommend this accommodation to anyone who wants to experience the real Spain as opposed to the usual tourist destinations. The property is located in the older part of the city where locals go about their normal lives and yet you are only a short walk away if you enjoy the modern city experience. Walk a bit more you can enjoy the beach with its long promenade and numerous eating places. Admission to the Alcazaba which overlooks the property is free and well worth a visit as was the visit to the Museum of Almeria.
Thank you Stephen, You were an ideal tenant. Thank you for having appreciated one of the positive sides of the house and of the district, which is their authenticity. I was a little bit worried because you were one of our very first tenants and because I was not on site, but it seems that the lady who takes care of the housework and the reception did well her work. So, see you again sometime. Francis.
One must compare Kerstin’s opinion with those of the other guests who occupied the house : all, without exception, to this day, rated 5/5.
- She did not read the description correctly…
- She wanted two large rooms but she booked a 3-seater house...
- She refused the little « children’s room » - bed 90 cm (35.44 inches) ? ok… but also...
- She refused the sofa bed of the air-conditioned living room - 140cm (55,12 inches), brand new, comfortable, never used before... (please see photos)
- She refused one of the two besdside tables of the big room, and its bedside lamp - she lied about this : it was a very good troubleshooting (and all the bedside lamps will be installed right now).
- She had a fight with her co-tenant and went to sleep in a hotel from the first day, and she never came back !!...
- She then asked for a refund, which is totally ridiculous in these circumstances...
- For the environment, I invite you to read the opinions of the other guests...
I’m gonna forget this bad week - for me... I keep available the emails from her friendly co-tenant Gudrun, all saying she was having a wonderful holidays in a wonderful house, like all the other tenants to date.
Really sorry for this anger - oh, very little anger :) :)
Inquilinos cuidadosos, simpaticos, perfectos. Recomiendo encarecidamente. Hasta otra vez, Zenaide, siempre seran bienvenidos.
- Very close to the town hall, the cathedral, the port, the huge Arab castle, tapas areas and renowned restaurants (Bar Puga, calle Jovellanos ...)
- The bus to downtown (if you do not want to walk), the port, beaches, supermarkets, etc., just past the door.
- A few tens of meters, the marvelous market of the Plaza de Pavia: vegetables, meat, and especially ultra fresh fish.
- Excellent tapas bars and restaurants in the area, prices are probably the cheapest that can be found in a big Spanish city.
- Mini Hollywood amusement park, Fort Bravo: filming locations of spaghetti westerns. Western shows.
- Walks in the mountains of Filabres (landscapes of southern Morocco) and Alpujarras (landscapes and villages of Moroccan Rif).
- The most beautiful rocky coast of Spain in Cabo de Gata. Hiking in the protected areas, unbuildable, on tens of kiloseters of coast and inward, around Cabo de Gata.
- Wide range of beaches: a long sandy beach of several kilometers in Almeria itself, many seaside urbanizations in the region, and wild beaches in protected area by a National Park, a few kilometers.
