About this property

Experience a little piece of truly rural, friendly France.

Hirondelle is a pretty stone-built single-story gite perched on a hillside overlooking vineyards, woodland and the local church spire. It has a beautiful shaded terrace and a large outdoor area with plenty of sun and shade all day long. There is a new above ground pool 50 metres or so from the gite which is in a lovely, secluded spot between a meadow and woodland. Hirondelle is equipped to a high standard with a very comfortable bed and, if needed, a top quality bed-settee. Guests love to just breathe and relax and enjoy the beautiful open outlook and local wildlife. The local village is in easy walking distance and whilst small has all you need; bakery, general store, post office, bar, restaurant, hairdresser, pharmacy, pool and tennis courts. It is a really welcoming place and we work closely with the community to support small local business. The local area is fascinating and very beautiful with rolling landscapes, pretty villages, unique attractions and a sense of space and peace. It is often described as La France Profonde, deep, rural France. In some ways time has stood still and the pace of life is very different. There are no major industrial sites so the air is clean and the skies are incredible. Enjoy incredible local produce; delicious food, great wines and of course a glass or two of fine Armagnac. We love it here and hope that all our guests will feel the same about this special corner of the world.

About the host

Host profile image
We are both Scottish, Alasdair from Glasgow and Fiona from Galloway. We lived in the North East of England for many years. It was always hovering in the back of their minds that one day we would like to run our own business. As keen campers, the idea of a campsite with gites was appealing. After a few years of swithering and dithering we just decided to get on with it and here we are.

Why they chose this property

We looked at a lot of lovely properties on the way but Le Poteau was the one. We both knew as soon as we arrived for our first viewing. We love the feel of The Gers. It is tucked away, less well known than its neighbours and not massively touristy. The local people are friendly, welcoming and extremely kind. The fact that the gites were part of the deal was unexpected but brilliant. We like the fact that they are not on the campsite itself so provide a real escape for people but it also means that "giters" can use the campsite if they want to join us for a social evening or whatever.

What makes this property unique

We fell in love with it because it is so real and normal here. The village is a pretty but working village where people get on with life. The local towns are busy but not hectic and the roads are wonderfully quiet. The landscape is gorgeous, verdant and ever changing with the rhythm of agriculture. Incidentally Gers has the highest level of Bio agriculture in France which makes it a great habitat for all wildlife.
