Gill Cottage lies in a rural location in the village of Crosby Garrett which is now part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village is famous for the Roman helmet that was found on land above the house, and was sold for over two million pounds at auction in London! Gill Cottage is ideal for families or couples who wish to enjoy a holiday in the Eden Valley with the Lake District National Park within easy reach. The cottage lies on the edge of the quiet farming village and has rural views from every window. There is a small village shop and post-office, but with Kirkby Stephen just 4 miles away, there is a good choice of local shops, pubs and restaurants to visit. The quaint town of Kirkby Londsdale is further afield at around 37 miles, and has its own attractions including Devil’s Bridge and Ruskin’s View. The market towns of Penrith and Kendal with their castle ruins, are both 20 miles away, and Carlisle with its castle and Tullie House Museum is 50 miles. Another castle can be found at Appleby-in-Westmorland. Penrith is also home to the Rheged Centre with something for all the family. Chocoholics will love the Chocolate Factory in Orton, whilst Hawes is home to the Wensleydale Cheese Factory, made famous by the TV characters ’Wallace and Gromit’. Nearby attractions include the Settle to Carlisle railway line linking Carlisle and Leeds. Occasionally, steam trains can be seen crossing the Crosby Garrett Viaduct from the front of the property. There are walks straight from the door and quiet country lanes making it a fantastic location for cyclists and walkers alike. For nature lovers, Smardale Nature Reserve and Sunbiggin Tarn are a short distance away, whilst the tourist towns of Windermere, Keswick and Pooley Bridge are all within 45 minutes. On the generally uncongested roads, greater distances can be travelled to places in less time. Small village shop 550 yards, pub and restaurant 4 miles.

Peaceful holiday
The cottage is lovely and very spacious. The surrounding area is very secluded, and there are some fantastic walks right from the doorstep. The hosts are very accommodating and super decent people. We would definitely stay again in the near future.

What a lovely weekend had by all! We were 2 families with 4 boys between ages 5-8.
What a lovely weekend had by all! We were 2 families with 4 boys between ages 5-8. They loved the cold walks followed by the hot tub after breakfast. Lots of space in the cottage also for them to hang out and chill too. We visited mid Dec so the cottage had lovely Christmas decor, we had Christmas lights on the cottage which we could watch whilst sat in the hot tub. We were also lucky to have snow on our last morning, the view from every single window in the cottage is beautiful. We loved the modern decor in the bedrooms and the beds are so comfy. This place is highly recommended. A big dining table that seats 8 too, so was nice to eat together too. You have everything you need in one place, the owners are friendly and accommodating too, they live next door and not intrusive at all. Thank you for the bottle of Prosecco and OJ on arrival AND our first cottage & hot tub experience, we will definitely be visiting again!! x
