About Jonathan Threlfall / Mary Threlfall
We bought Amaroo in 1981 and have had wonderful family times there. It's ideal for children from 3 to perhaps 16. We are both keen sailors and have spent a lot of time on the water. The Garden was designed by Michael Bligh and built by Michael Bates. I am a keen gardener and spend as much time in it as I can. I am a Guide at the Botanic Gardens. Jonathan has written books in the Studio. His daughter and sister have painted many pictures, including a small one in the kitchen. It is a family home and so lots of books and games suitable for all ages.
Why Jonathan Threlfall / Mary Threlfall chose Central Coast
We love water views and when we first came to Sydney, we drew a compass circle around North Sydney where we lived, and still do, representing travel distance of less than 1 1/2 hours. We travelled the Blue Mountains and the Hawkesbury and fell in love with Amaroo and its boat house and jetty. We think its the most beautiful property on the river
What makes this Cottage unique
The tranquillity, the garden, the excitement of young kids at jumping into the water. Everything.

The cottage is gorgeous, perfect location, beautifully furnished and filled with everything you could possibly need. Highly recommended.
Well that was an experience.
The cottage was so rustic and beautiful and the location amazing. Such a stunning part of the world.
The cottage takes you back to another time in history and demands you chill out.
Thanks for leaving a review. We understand there there was power outage during your stay and consequently you gave us a rating of 4 stars.
We were disappointed too. The power outage was out of our control due to the worst electrical storms that the Sydney region have experienced.
We provide back up in terms of a gas cooker, gas bbq (lit by solar power), candles, torches and mosquito coils.
Your main complaint is that you couldn’t read at night and so we refunded you half the fee. All the rest of our guests have rated us 5/5.

Haven of tranquility 1 hour from Sydney CBD
We parked at kangaroo point and met Neale and his taxi and tinny service and were taken to paradise. Secluded, quiet, dramatic, historic, charming, comfortable and just perfect for a weekend birthday getaway. The home had everything we needed, was amazingly clean and cozy. Views from the home and boat shed were stunning. The gardens were adorable as were all the many seating options around the garden. Our weekend was perfect. We cannot wait to return time and time again. Mary and Jonathan were amazing hosts. Very caring and full of useful information. Our pooch Howie was made to feel as welcome, he loved swimming of the beach next to the boat shed and enjoyed his first tinny ride to Dangar Island were breakfast at the cafe was sensational. Thank you for having us Mary and Jonathan
The most beautiful cottage ever
We spent a wonderful weekend at the Amaroo cottage. Everything is perfect. Just exactly what we needed for a good escape. Mary is very friendly and helpful to make sure that we had a good stay. Definitely recommend this place to other people. We plan to return in summer time.
This is our third visit to Amaroo and it won't be the last. A lovely, relaxing retreat in a beautiful location. Easy access to the many unique areas of the Hawkesbury.
1 hour drive from Sydney and an absolute dream, this place is gorgeous! The hosts Mary and Jonathan were extremely helpful in all respects. The house, boat shed and studio were presented immaculately . Note that the jetty is shared with the neighbours so not 100% private but nonetheless they were lovely people and even let us sample their recent harvest of honey! Will be back for sure!
If you have hired a tinny you can explore the Hawkesbury River and take a picnic to one of the sandy beaches. There is a very pretty waterway leading down to Berowra.
You can jump into the river for a swim or make use of the fishing rods and crab nets which are provided in the boat shed and spend an evening fishing off the wharf or hire a tinny and head out along the Hawkesbury.
For those who wish to explore further afield, there are a number of tracks through the bush land to a nearby dam or waterfall. You can hire a tinny and pack a picnic and explore the local riverside beaches or walking tracks.
