Nice house & space, but pool unusable despite assurance it would be ready. Still awaiting resolution
We were pleased with the space and homey feel. It's a great space for a large group to share. Pride in ownership is evident throughout the house. We were deciding between two places and chose this one because of the pool, even though it was more expensive. Sadly, the pool was not ready the entire time we were there. We had checked twice to be sure it would be ready and the kids were very disappointed it wasn't. Colleen contacted the pool company, but they didn't arrive until our last afternoon. They were still cleaning it that evening. This disappointment, in addition to mouse droppings on one dresser and large, black ants in several places, made us dissatisfied overall. We wanted to be cordial in coming to terms (some type of refund) that was agreeable with them and with us. They offered a long weekend stay, but that is not a possibility for us. We live several states away and were only there because of a wedding. Our rating would have been a five, if the pool had been usable, if there hadn't been mouse droppings, and if there were no ants. Considering these things, we conservatively believe a refund of at least twenty-five percent of our cost would have been fair. We are still awaiting their decision. A more agreeable resolution would have helped the whole thing and our rating.
We felt terrible that the pool was not ready for the people who rented this long weekend. Our pool company assured us the pool would be up and running, and we had no reason to believe it was not (the house was vacant the week prior to the renters moving in). This was a very unfortunate situation that was out of our control, and we have since hired a different pool company as a result of this debacle. In hindsight, there was only 1 day that was suitable for the renters to use the pool due to their schedule and the stormy weather during their stay. Regardless, we know how disappointed they must have been. Consequently, we thought it was more than fair to offer them a free long weekend, which as they stated, did not suit them; we then sent them a $500 refund. As far as the ants and mice droppings, neither were present 1 week before the renters moved in when we were there, or from the beginning of the rental season Memorial Day weekend. Unfortunately, these are issues that occasionally can arise at any time with a house, and they were promptly addressed and resolved when it was brought to our attention. We spoke to our cleaning crew about the issue as well. Almost every renter we have had has given very positive feedback in the past; we hope our house will continue to provide many happy memories for our guests in the future, as it has so much for our family.
Great house. Good for two families as basement is spacious and private. We enjoyed our stay.
So glad to hear that!
Great Vacation Home
My family and I had a great time at the home. The owner's daughter Colleen was very responsive and helpful and even coordinated returning a left behind piece of jewelry to my wife. We loved the pool, neighborhood, and patio with very large open family room and dining room areas. The area is great for walking and close enough to Sag Harbor and the vineyard for nice relaxing trips. Overall a very fun and relaxing vacation.
Minor complaints: The local Wainscott and Town Line beaches only had parking for those with private permits and are more than 1 mile away - making it logistically difficult. The beach that we drove to with public parking - Gibson Beach - was great though with parking for $20/day and much more family oriented. The pool heater malfunctioned and was not working for the entire trip, which was a bummer for early morning and late night swims, but was plenty warm during the day and was perfect for the kids with their life vests and adults. The hot water heater for the house also died after a few showers in a row, but that is not unusual. The basement bedrooms were not individually air-conditioned, but the central AC in the basement cooled the rooms downed enough as long as the doors were left ajar - certainly annoying for lack of privacy though. The inside of the home and refrigerator were a bit dusty and dirty, but nothing terrible.
**Update on hot water heater 10/23/2018: The hot water tank has been replaced this past May with a much larger one. This was a great decision...no more hot water issues, even if there is a large group:)
Thank you for letting us know about the dust and condition of the fridge; we spoke to the cleaning crew about our past and future expectations. Unfortunately. the heater broke down during your stay:( I am sorry as well about the hot water issue...if everyone waits to shower around the same time, the hot water will run out (I know this well from experience); it's a small hot water tank. We are looking into replacing it for a larger model for next summer. I'm glad you enjoyed your week!
If you enjoy wine, you will love Wolffer Estate, only about 3/4 of a mile away. There are many other top-rated wineries nearby, such as Duck Walk and Manning Sisters, as well as the numerous North Shore vineyards.
The Seafood Shop of Wainscott has the tastiest catches of the day and is only around the corner.
There are too many excellent restaurants to mention, all within close proximity to the house.
Friends will often golf at the public course in Sag Harbor for a relaxing round. However, one of the top-rated public golf courses in the United States is located at Montauk Downs-call ahead for a decent tee-time!
