Property and Guests Neglected and Uncared for
This property does not reflect its listing IRL. It is run down and poorly maintained, the cleaning left a lot to be desired and the owners were uncommunicative.
Maintenance issues: Carpets are threadbare and stained, one stain in bedroom was viscous and sticky. Many items were broken, damaged or not working e.g. TV in bedroom, lamps, dishwasher, pedal bin, aircon units (one not working, another leaking), 3 of the 5 cooking hobs, dining chairs, lights, drains on balcony and in shower over bath, bathroom fan and heat lamp, door latch, shower screen, roller blind.
Cleaning issues: Black and pink mould on shower tiles, filmy greasy coating on floor tiles, stains on fabric furniture and throw pillows (that were then placed stain side down on clean bed pillows), dusty, stained bed skirts, bar stools sticky underneath, stinking food and dishes left in broken dishwasher, dishes left in sink when we arrived, grimy shower vents, scum mark around bath.
Safety issues: Crowded wiring and smoke detectors covered in plastic wrap.
Guest experience issues: only given 5 small, thin towels for a week’s stay for the family. No information manual. No Netflix login details. Did not respond to my concerns communicated by emails, text and phone messages (no one answered the landline or mobile) until I posted on HomeAway a couple of days later and then they finally said they would send a cleaner the next day, but did not address any of the other issues. The cleaner never came. The twin bedroom is not really a bedroom but rather a media room off the lounge with two beds in it. This meant we couldn’t watch the only working TV in the apartment or make noise as the kids couldn’t sleep. It also had no aircon so needed to leave the door open to keep it cool. Would have been useful to have luggage racks and oven mitts.
Positives: The beds were comfortable and the location was outstanding.
Overall this property is NOT good value for money. It may once have been a beautiful apartment, but it has been neglected and is barely 3 stars now. It is overpriced for what you get. You are left feeling like the owners don't give a toss about their guests. They talk the talk, but don't walk the walk - it is all marketing hype. We will not be back and will be asking HomeAway to facilitate a refund.
While this is a roomy and modern penthouse, there are certainly several items needing attention to lift this back to a quality property.
The carpet needs replacing and joins with the hard floors in particular so not to have tacks raised when bare little and large feet are walking around.
There is damage to the kitchen cabinetry desperately needing attention.
There was no kettle, resulting in us having to request one to be delivered.
Knives were terribly blunt, then read where we could request them to be sharpened - surely this is not up to the renter!
Several blinds did not work, and they were not insulated enough to block light, especially in the twin bedroom off the living area.
Fantastic apartment that suited our needs. So close to Acland Street local restaurants and bars . Luxury at a great price :)
Penthouse St Kilda Style
We had a great time staying at the apartment on Barkly street. The location was fantastic, just at the top of Acland st, so convenient for transport, meals and the famous bakeries! Good view at night and no night street noise beyond the restaurant (also great value!) across the road. Stayed as 2 adults and 2 teens and plenty of room. We would definitely stay there again, thank you Espresso Apartments.
Comfortable and convenient
Really happy with our stay. We rented both penthouse apartments for a group of 7 and it was excellent. More than enough room and close to everything we needed.
