House and Cottage on 42 acres in Forreston
Robin & Garry Dawson
Why Robin & Garry Dawson chose Forreston
Garry and I first saw and fell in love with Barrenjoey Hideaway in June 2009 and have been passionately running our beautiful 42 acre farm as holiday accommodation since June 2010. Since then we have seen thousands of wonderful guests drive in to experience an unforgettable farm stay. We also love to welcome back our many return guests who over the years have seen the farm evolve. They delight in the many changes they see from year to year and season to season. To discover and study the history of Barrenjoey from its beginnings way back in 1856 - when Johann and Maria Muller found themselves in Adelaide all the way from Germany and built their first little cottage, now just a ruin -we can see how this farm has been loved; we are fortunate enough to now call her ours. Garry and I put as much into Barrenjoey as we take from it. We delight in being able to share it with you all!
What makes this House unique
Simply said, we think there is no other property like it! We waited a long time to find the right place for us, and this 42 acre, historic farm has everything one could wish for. Barrenjoey is set on a beautiful, quiet dirt road, but not too far off the beaten track, being only 3.5km from Birdwood; it has magnificent views from every aspect of the house and its surrounds, and it has sprawling gardens which we spend every spare moment maintaining and improving. Native birdlife is abundant, from sulphur crested cockatoos and other parrots to kookaburras and to small, fragile finches, and our resident blue wrens are testament to how one can become quite mesmerised with bird watching! Frogs happily croak nearby in our ponds, and our resident mob of kangaroos are at home wherever they may be grazing on the property. There are many varied areas of our farm to explore, from the acres of gardens to our untouched, native hill area, to our forest with 3 dams. Fragile ruins indicate her age. And our front verandah is perfect to just sit and listen, watch and enjoy. You will discover something new each time! The house and cottage are roomy, with three large sleeping areas, all set a reasonable distance from each other, along with two bathrooms and toilets. Bunks for 3 are at the end of the main house. The kitchen is superbly equipped with every type of utensil and crockery/cutlery item you will need, plus many extras. The laundry is fully equipped with washing machine and dryer. Our combustion heater keeps the house warm and cosy during winter, and all timber is cut, stacked and free of charge from our agro forest. During the summer months the house and cottage stay cool with two reverse cycle air conditioners. An undercover area gives unparalleled views and is ideal for drinks, meals and small gatherings. A large gas BBQ is provided, along with ample seating for up to 20. As one of our very early guests commented in an online review many years ago, "Barrenjoey Rocks!"

Connect with nature
A great place for some R&R. Cosy cottage with lots of acreage, ideal for taking the dog for long walks. The place had plenty of books, games, videos to use when indoors which would get a family together and "off all the technological gadgets". A very relaxing place.
Beautiful cottage in Perfect Surroundings
Robin and Gary’s beautiful cottage and fully equipped house was well above expectations. The homely wood fire and the country settings with manicured gardens was amazing. Our time was too short and we will definitely be coming back for a longer stay. Thankyou to Robin and Gary for their hospitality and having the fire well stoked even on our very late arrival.
Thank you Richard, it was an absolute pleasure to have you both! We hope your return to Gumeracha and Forreston was a memorable one. We would love to see you again next time you visit the Adelaide Hills. Cheers!
Robin and Garry went out of their way to accommodate us and our extra guests. House had everything we needed including breakfast supplies, Pity we didn’t have more time to enjoy the lovely surrounds. Thank you for going the extra mile and we appreciated all the little extras.
It was our pleasure to help make your large group as comfortable as possible Di, and we look forward to welcoming you back again to enjoy some more quality time at Barrenjoey! Cheers, Robin
The cottage was very comfortable because of the design for example the rooms were very comfy because of the size and how the rooms was decorated. The front yard was amazing because of the trees, flowers, the ponds etc. The beds were very comfortable because we all had a good sleep.
Stunning place: well located, very clean and comfortable. Would love to stay there again!!
Barrenjoey Hideaway is just wonderful! The house & cottage is very clean, comfortable & well equipped with everything you could possibly need for a peaceful getaway. Our girls (aged 7, 4 & nearly 2 years) were very spoilt for choice with the abundance of toys & games available for their use. They also enjoyed the cubby house & exploring the beautiful gardens. So much to see & do without having to leave the property. Robin & Gary were extremely helpful & lovely to deal with. They have created a very special place that we found very hard to leave! We would definitely recommend Barrenjoey to our friends & family & we would love to stay again when the opportunity arises.
Thank you, Melissa. More new adventures and fun activities await the children on your return, along with some fabulous relaxation time for the adults! Garry and I look forward to your return. Cheers!
Barrenjoey is situated on historic Winton Road, which lies between Gumeracha and Birdwood. It is a very scenic, quiet dirt road and in many parts is lined with massive, old river gums. There are many attractions within easy reach of Barrenjoey, including the Motor Museum in Birdwood and the Big Rocking Chair in Gumeracha. Further afield there is the Gorge Wildlife Park, an easy 15 minute drive to Cuddly Creek. There are also many fantastic local wineries in the surrounding townships and beyond. The Barossa Valley lies a very reasonable distance away, about 25 minutes drive through some gorgeous countryside. During the summer months, one of the biggest cherry farms in the Southern Hemisphere, Torrens Valley Orchards, offers unlimited supplies of sweet cherries. We are so lucky to have them situated at Forreston, right at the turnoff to Winton Road! The farmers market at Mount Pleasant, a short 15 minute drive away, is open every Saturday. Artisans, growers and producers from the area meet between 8am and 12 midday to provide visitors and locals with a unique and affordable food shopping experience.
